A Bitcoin address has revealed its public key only when the blockchain contains the data needed to spend an output sent to that address. For legacy P2PKH outputs, look in the spending input’s scriptSig; for native SegWit P2WPKH, inspect the witness stack. A transaction that merely sends bitcoin to an address does not normally publish that address’s full public key.
Taproot is the important exception: a P2TR output commits an x-only output key in its locking script, so that key is visible before anyone spends the output. The procedure below shows how to distinguish these cases, verify a discovered key, and avoid confusing an on-chain public key with a wallet’s private key or extended public key.

What “public-key revealed” means on Bitcoin
An address is generally an identifier for a hash or a spending script, not the public key itself. When a wallet creates an output, the transaction’s scriptPubKey commits the coins to a condition. The future spender must provide data that satisfies that condition. For common pay-to-public-key-hash and pay-to-witness-public-key-hash outputs, that data includes the full public key, so the key becomes public when the output is spent.
The distinction is about blockchain publication, not what a wallet knows internally. A wallet may have generated and stored a public key long before a transaction uses it. Until the corresponding spending transaction is confirmed and its input data is visible, an observer cannot recover the full P2PKH or P2WPKH key from the receiving address alone.

Seeing a public key does not give an observer the ability to spend the coins. A valid signature made with the corresponding private key is still required. The principal consequence is privacy: a published key, especially when the address is reused, makes activity easier to associate and analyze.
Address-type comparison
| Output type | Is the key hidden until spend? | Where to inspect | What a spend can expose |
|---|---|---|---|
| P2PKH | Normally yes; the address represents a public-key hash. | Spending input’s scriptSig. |
A signature and the full public key. |
| P2WPKH | Normally yes; the witness program commits to a public-key hash. | Spending input’s witness stack. | A signature and the full public key. |
| P2SH | The address commits to a redeem-script hash. | scriptSig when spent. |
The redeem script and any keys or signatures required by it. |
| P2WSH | The address commits to a witness-script hash. | Witness stack when spent. | The witness script and the data used to satisfy it, potentially including several keys. |
| P2TR (Taproot) | No. The x-only output key is committed in the output before spending. | The output’s scriptPubKey; inspect the input for spend details. |
The output key is already visible. A script-path spend can additionally reveal the executed script and control block. |
The address label alone is not enough for unusual or wrapped constructions. Decode the output script, then classify the actual script template. Network matters as well, so do not infer a mainnet or testnet interpretation from a prefix without checking the decoded script.
Step-by-step: prove whether an address has been revealed
1. Identify the output script and address type
Start with the exact address and the network on which it was used. Determine whether its outputs are P2PKH, P2SH, P2WPKH, P2WSH, or P2TR by examining a transaction output that paid the address. The output’s scriptPubKey is authoritative; a human-readable prefix is only a quick clue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf an address has received funds more than once, classify each output separately. An address can receive outputs of the same general type at different times, but your evidence must be tied to each specific outpoint.
2. Record every receiving outpoint
For each transaction that paid the address, record the transaction ID and output index in the form txid:vout. The same address can control several independent outputs. Checking only the address’s latest balance is not sufficient because an old output may have been spent while another remains unspent.
3. Find the transaction that spends each outpoint
Search the chain for an input whose previous-output reference points to the recorded txid:vout. If no such input exists, that output is unspent and a P2PKH or P2WPKH public key has not been published through spending that output. If a transaction is unconfirmed, treat its data as pending until it is included in a block.

4. Inspect the correct input field
- P2PKH: open the spending input’s
scriptSig. It contains a signature and a serialized, full public key. - P2WPKH: open the input’s witness data. The witness stack normally contains a signature and the full public key.
- P2SH: inspect the final item in
scriptSig, which is the redeem script, and then examine that script’s spending data. A multisignature redeem script can expose several public keys at once. - P2WSH: inspect the witness stack, including the witness script. Keys and other satisfaction data are visible according to the script being executed.
- P2TR: read the output’s 32-byte x-only key from its Taproot
scriptPubKey. For a key-path spend, the input normally does not reveal a separate full public key. For a script-path spend, inspect the revealed script and control block as well.
5. Verify that the data belongs to the output
Do not treat any key appearing in a transaction as proof that it belongs to your address. For P2PKH, hash the discovered public key with the network’s address rules and compare the result with the key-hash committed by the previous output. For P2WPKH, perform the corresponding witness-program hash check. Then verify that the signature and public key satisfy the previous output script. A transaction decoder or full node can perform script validation; a manual hash comparison is a useful independent check.
6. Record the result per output
Mark each outpoint as unspent and key not published through a spend, spent and key published, or Taproot output key visible from creation. This avoids a misleading yes-or-no answer when one address has several outputs with different spending histories.
How to read the transaction data
P2PKH: the public key is in scriptSig
A legacy pay-to-public-key-hash output commits to a hash of a public key. Its spending input supplies two main items: a signature and the full public key. In a raw transaction view, the public key is usually a hexadecimal byte string beginning with a format byte and followed by the elliptic-curve point. The exact compressed or uncompressed encoding is not the key question; the important test is whether its hash matches the previous output’s commitment and the signature validates.
Receiving another payment to the same P2PKH address does not add the key to the chain. The key appears when one of that address’s outputs is spent. Once one output has revealed it, later reuse of the same address makes it straightforward to connect additional payments to the already-known key.
P2WPKH: look in the witness, not scriptSig
Native SegWit moves the unlocking data out of the legacy scriptSig and into the input’s witness field. A P2WPKH witness normally has a signature item followed by the full public key. Many explorers show this under an input’s “witness” or “stack” section. If you inspect only scriptSig, you may incorrectly conclude that no key was published.
The witness public key must hash to the 20-byte key-hash committed by the previous P2WPKH output. The transaction’s marker and flag identify SegWit serialization, but the decisive evidence is the witness stack attached to the input spending your outpoint.

P2SH and P2WSH: the script can be larger than one key
P2SH and P2WSH addresses commit to scripts rather than directly to one public-key hash. Before spending, the redeem script or witness script remains hidden behind its hash. Spending reveals the script and the data needed to execute it. Depending on the script, that can include one key, several public keys, signatures, timelocks, hashlocks, or other conditions.
Consequently, asking whether “the public key” was revealed is too narrow for these types. The correct question is which script was revealed and which keys are present in that script or in the satisfaction data. A script may contain public keys that were committed from the beginning but were not visible to outside observers until execution.
P2TR: the output key is visible immediately
Taproot P2TR outputs commit an x-only tweaked output key directly in the output script. Anyone examining the funding transaction can therefore see that output key before the coins are spent. This is different from P2PKH and P2WPKH, where the address normally hides the full key behind a hash until spending.
Recommended Free Tools
A Taproot key-path spend uses the committed output key without necessarily publishing a separate internal key. A script-path spend reveals the executed tapscript and its control block in the witness. Those additional items can disclose spending conditions that were not visible from the output alone.
Checking with Bitcoin Core
Use getaddressinfo for wallet context
If the address belongs to a Bitcoin Core wallet, run:
bitcoin-cli getaddressinfo "YOUR_ADDRESS"
The result can include a wallet-known pubkey field and the generated scriptPubKey. This helps you identify which key the wallet associated with the address and confirms the script template the wallet expects. It does not, by itself, prove that the public key has been published on the blockchain: a wallet can know a key that has never appeared in a spending input.

Retrieve and decode the relevant transactions
After you have a funding transaction ID and the transaction that spends its output, retrieve the decoded transaction from a node:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →bitcoin-cli getrawtransaction "SPENDING_TXID" true
The decoded result separates inputs, previous-output references, scriptSig, and witness data. Match the input’s txid and vout to your recorded outpoint. For a P2PKH spend, inspect vin[n].scriptSig.hex or its decoded assembly. For SegWit spends, inspect vin[n].txinwitness. For Taproot, inspect the previous output’s script and the witness to determine whether the spend used the key path or script path.
If you start with raw hexadecimal rather than a transaction ID, decode it with:
bitcoin-cli decoderawtransaction "RAW_TRANSACTION_HEX"
Use a fully validating node or another independent verifier when confirming the signature and script. Parsing a hexadecimal field and assuming that every 33-byte-looking value is a relevant public key can produce false positives.
Handle pruned-node and wallet limitations
A pruned node may not retain every historical transaction needed for an address-history investigation. In that case, obtain the missing raw transactions from a node with the required history or from a block explorer, then verify the result independently. Wallet indexes also differ: getaddressinfo reports what the wallet knows, not a complete chain-wide history for every address ever used.
Checking with a block explorer
- Enter the address and list every transaction output that paid it.
- Open each output and note its transaction ID and output index.
- Follow the output’s “spent by” link, if present, to the spending transaction.
- Expand the exact input that references your outpoint.
- Read
scriptSigfor legacy spends or the witness section for SegWit and Taproot spends. - Compare the discovered key or script with the previous output’s locking script rather than relying on the explorer’s summary label.
Explorer interfaces use different labels and may hide witness data behind an advanced or raw-transaction view. If the page shows only a shortened address or a “from” field, switch to the raw transaction representation. For a definitive result, compare the explorer data with an independently decoded transaction or a Bitcoin Core node.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistaking an address for a public key
An address is usually a hash or script identifier. Base58 or Bech32 text is not the elliptic-curve public key that appears in a spending input. Decode the output script and inspect the spend instead.
Checking only whether the address received funds
Funding is not revelation for P2PKH or P2WPKH. You must find an input that spends a specific output and then inspect its unlocking data.
Looking in the wrong field
Legacy P2PKH data is in scriptSig; native SegWit data is in the witness. A search that examines only one field can miss the key entirely.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Confusing wallet knowledge with chain publication
getaddressinfo may show a public key because the wallet generated or imported it. Only a confirmed transaction containing the relevant key or script establishes on-chain revelation.
Assuming every exposed key is the address’s key
Inputs can contain keys for other inputs in the same transaction, and multisignature scripts can contain several keys. Always match the input to the exact previous outpoint and validate the script.
Ignoring Taproot’s different privacy model
For P2TR, the output key is public from the start. Do not apply the P2PKH rule “hidden until spend” to a Taproot output. A script-path spend can also disclose more policy information than a key-path spend.
What revelation means for privacy and security
Publishing a public key is primarily a privacy event. Address reuse lets observers associate later payments with an address whose key and prior activity are already visible. Use a fresh receiving address when your wallet supports address rotation, and avoid treating one address as a permanent identity.

Under BIP32, an extended public key can derive descendant non-hardened public keys, giving it a much broader view of wallet activity. As BIP32 puts it: “Leaking a private key means access to coins – leaking a public key can mean loss of privacy.” Protect private keys separately; seeing a public key does not authorize spending.
If an xpub has been shared, the privacy impact can extend beyond one address because observers may derive and monitor descendant addresses. That situation calls for a wallet-privacy review, but it is not equivalent to private-key compromise. If a private key or seed phrase may have leaked, move funds according to a controlled recovery plan; a public-key revelation alone does not require an emergency sweep.
