Start with the exact PC model—or the motherboard model for a custom desktop—and check its manufacturer’s specifications or service manual. For RAM, match the memory generation, module type, capacity and supported configuration. For an SSD, match the bay or socket, drive dimensions and interface: an M.2 socket does not necessarily support both SATA and PCIe/NVMe drives.
Find your exact PC or motherboard model
A broad description such as “Dell laptop” or “gaming PC” is not enough to establish compatibility. Record the full computer model and product variant; for a custom-built desktop, identify the motherboard model. Use the manufacturer’s specification page, service manual or model-specific compatibility list. Kingston and Crucial also offer memory finders that use system or device details, but treat their results as a starting point and compare them with the system documentation.

If you cannot identify the model, check the label on the computer or the system information shown in its settings or firmware. For a desktop assembled from parts, the motherboard model is the key reference for memory slots and M.2 support.

- Read the memory specifications. Find the supported DDR generation, such as DDR4 or DDR5, and the physical module type. Desktop systems commonly use DIMMs; many laptops use smaller SO-DIMMs. Generations and form factors are not interchangeable, so match the documentation rather than relying on a module’s appearance.
- Check capacity and configuration. Confirm the maximum total memory, number of slots and supported module arrangement. An empty slot does not mean that every module or capacity will work.
- Check supported speed and module details. Compare the advertised speed with the system’s supported speeds, and look for any documented limits on rank, chip density or module configuration. The system may run memory at a lower supported speed than the module’s advertised rating.
- Look for a qualified vendor list (QVL). If the system or motherboard maker publishes one, use it to find memory models tested for that particular platform. A model’s absence from a QVL is not, by itself, proof that it is incompatible.
- Check BIOS support on older or unusual systems. Kingston cautions that some older DDR4 systems may not support modules built with newer 16Gbit DRAM chips, and some newer DDR5 densities can depend on platform support or BIOS updates. Check the maker’s BIOS notes and memory guidance before buying.
- Use a product finder as a cross-check. Kingston’s memory finder and Crucial’s System Selector can help identify memory for a device or system model. Confirm the proposed part against the computer or motherboard specifications, particularly for older hardware.
For an upgrade that keeps existing RAM, identify the installed module’s part number and compare its type and configuration with the system limits. Do not assume that adding a different module will work simply because the connector fits.

How to check SSD compatibility
- Identify the bay or socket. The service manual or specification should say whether the computer has a 2.5-inch SATA bay, an M.2 socket, or another storage option. Check whether the bay is present and available in your exact model and configuration.
- For M.2, verify the protocol—not just the shape. M.2 describes a physical form factor. An M.2 drive may use SATA or PCIe/NVMe, and an M.2 socket may support one protocol or both. Confirm the socket’s supported interface in the PC or motherboard documentation.
- Match the drive length and connector details. Check the supported M.2 length, such as 2280 or 2242, and any specified key or socket requirements. Gigabyte’s model-specific M.2 QVL separates SATA and PCIe drive entries and shows that supported lengths can differ.
- Confirm NVMe support with the system maker. Intel’s NVMe installation guidance says PCIe NVMe support requires specific motherboard or system-vendor support. Check the vendor documentation instead of assuming that a physically fitting M.2 NVMe drive will work.
- Consider host-interface limits. A drive may fit and function while delivering less than its advertised maximum speed if the computer supports a slower interface generation. Verify host support before treating a drive’s peak specification as achievable in your PC.
- Plan boot-drive replacement separately. Hardware fit does not determine how to transfer an operating system. Follow the computer maker’s service instructions and decide separately whether to migrate the existing installation or reinstall it.
What to compare before choosing a part
Once the system’s supported options are clear, compare only products that meet those requirements.
| Upgrade | Compatibility details to confirm |
|---|---|
| RAM | DDR generation; DIMM or SO-DIMM form factor; total capacity and stick arrangement; supported speed; module, rank or chip-density limits; BIOS support if relevant. |
| SSD | 2.5-inch or M.2 format; SATA or PCIe/NVMe protocol; supported M.2 length and connector details; capacity limits; host interface generation. |
Compatibility finders are useful for narrowing choices, not a universal guarantee. The computer or motherboard maker’s documentation is the better authority when a system is older, BIOS-dependent or subject to model-specific restrictions. Support can vary by exact product revision or configuration.
