U.S. Treasury bills and Bitcoin are not interchangeable places to hold cash. A bill has a maturity date and pays its face value at maturity; Bitcoin has no maturity or promised payment, and its sale price can change sharply. Bills may suit a known short-term cash need if the maturity and access rules fit. Bitcoin involves speculative price risk as well as custody and trading-platform risks.
How Treasury bills and Bitcoin produce returns
Treasury bills have a defined maturity payment
Treasury bills mature in one year or less. They are sold at face value or at a discount, and the Treasury pays face value at maturity; the difference between the purchase price and face value is the bill’s interest. The terms and mechanics are explained by TreasuryDirect.

A bill’s stated rate is not meaningful without its date, maturity and quotation convention. The Treasury’s daily bill-rate series consists of indicative secondary-market quotations for recently auctioned bills, taken at about 3:30 p.m. on business days. The bank-discount rate uses par value and a 360-day year, so it should not be treated as a direct measure of the return on every purchase or holding period. The figures available for this comparison do not establish a live rate for October 7, 2026; no current yield is quoted here.
Bitcoin has no contractual yield or maturity payment
Bitcoin’s return depends on the market price when it is sold. The cited materials establish no contractual cash yield or face-value payment comparable to a Treasury bill. An investor who needs money on a particular date must accept that Bitcoin could then be worth substantially less than its purchase price.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

What holding a bill to maturity does—and does not—settle
A bill held to maturity pays face value, but that does not make every use of a bill risk-free. If sold early, its market price can be higher or lower than the purchase price as market yields change. Inflation can also reduce the purchasing power of the proceeds, and the rate available when money is reinvested may differ. Treasury’s explanation of bill terms describes the maturity payment; Treasury rate information reflects market rates that can change.
Bitcoin’s price and market risks
Bitcoin has no contractual value at maturity to anchor the amount received. An SEC-filed fund disclosure states, “The price of bitcoin is highly volatile.” SEC-filed disclosures also describe the possibility of losing all or substantially all of an investment and identify risks involving custody, theft, fraud, manipulation, security failures, regulation and trading venues. Price volatility is only one part of the risk: access to an asset and the systems used to hold or trade it can fail or be disrupted.

Liquidity means more than whether an asset trades
A useful liquidity assessment considers the bid-ask spread, the amount available at quoted prices (market depth), and how much the price moves when an order is executed. The Federal Reserve describes these dimensions in its market-liquidity framework. A market can have frequent trading and still impose meaningful costs or price impact when someone needs to sell.

Accessing and selling Treasury bills
Individuals can purchase bills through TreasuryDirect using noncompetitive bids or through financial intermediaries such as banks, brokers and dealers. TreasuryDirect outlines these auction access routes. If you may need the money before maturity, consider how you would sell the bill and what price might be available then; the maturity payment applies when held to maturity, not to an early sale.

Trading and holding Bitcoin
Bitcoin trading is spread across venues. SEC-filed disclosures describe fragmented markets, inconsistent prices, platform outages and liquidity disruptions that may impair execution. A displayed price or trading volume does not guarantee that a particular order can be filled at that price, or that an investor can withdraw or transfer assets when needed. Custody and venue risks are distinct from the risk that Bitcoin’s market price falls.
When each may fit a financial need
A bill may be worth considering for a known short-term cash need
If you expect to need a defined amount around a known date, a bill’s maturity can be matched to that date. This is most relevant if you can hold the bill to maturity and understand the consequences of needing to sell earlier. Compare the bill’s maturity and dated yield quote with your actual holding period rather than relying on an undated rate.

Bitcoin is a speculative exposure, not a cash substitute
Bitcoin may be relevant to someone considering a speculative digital asset who can tolerate large price changes and the associated custody, venue and market-structure risks. It has no maturity date, so it cannot provide the same scheduled face-value payment as a bill. Someone depending on a set amount on a set date would need to account for the possibility that a Bitcoin sale after a downturn would not raise enough.
A practical comparison
| Question | Treasury bills | Bitcoin |
|---|---|---|
| What determines the return? | The purchase price and face value, with the specific yield dependent on the auction or market quote and holding period. | The market price when sold; no contractual cash yield or maturity payment is established by the cited materials. |
| Is there a maturity payment? | Yes. Face value is paid at maturity if held to maturity. | No maturity date or promised face-value payment. |
| What if you must sell early? | The resale price may differ from the purchase price as market yields change. | The sale price may be materially below the purchase price; execution can also be affected by venue or liquidity disruptions. |
| What operational access matters? | Auction purchase through TreasuryDirect or an intermediary; early sale depends on a secondary market and its available price. | Custody, trading venue, security and withdrawal or transfer access, in addition to market price. |
What this comparison cannot tell you
The available sources do not establish an apples-to-apples current-yield comparison, an equivalent Bitcoin yield, a standardized side-by-side liquidity score or a future return for either asset. A bill-rate quotation and Bitcoin’s market price describe different things and should not be presented as comparable yields. Neither asset’s future performance follows from its mechanics or historical market structure.

This is general education, not an individualized recommendation. Which risks matter most depends on when you need the money, whether you can hold a bill to maturity, and whether you can tolerate Bitcoin’s price and infrastructure risks.
