Record the dropped-frame counter alongside buffer health, resolution, and connection speed. Repeated evening trouble that improves off-peak suggests a time-of-day association—but the overlay cannot prove that an Indian ISP, rather than Wi-Fi, the device, or another part of the delivery path, caused it.
What the check can—and cannot—tell you
The Viewport / Frames line shows playback frame counts, including dropped frames. A rising dropped-frame count confirms that frames were dropped during playback, but does not identify the cause. Buffer draining, interruptions, and a fall in selected resolution provide useful context: together, they can make a delivery problem more plausible, but they do not locate a fault.

The useful question is whether the same setup repeatedly performs worse during busy hours than during a quieter period. A single screenshot, one speed test, or a single bad evening cannot establish that pattern or prove ISP congestion.
Capture Stats for nerds during the problem
- Choose a repeatable setup. Pick a video and the device you normally watch on. Note the date and time, connection type (Wi-Fi, mobile data, or wired Ethernet), selected playback quality, and symptoms: choppy motion, buffering, reduced quality, or a combination.
- Open the overlay. On desktop, start playback, right-click the video player, and select Stats for nerds. On a TV, open the player settings and enable the overlay. YouTube also supports casting the overlay when it is enabled on the mobile device.
- Capture it while playback is affected. Take a clear screenshot or photo before the issue clears. Record the time with it; a later capture may miss the conditions that caused the interruption. See YouTube’s Stats for nerds instructions.
- Write down the relevant fields. Record
Viewport / Frames, including the dropped-frame count;Current / Optimal Res;Connection Speed;Network Activity; andBuffer Health. If possible, note them at the start of playback and again while the symptom occurs.
How to read the fields together
- Dropped frames rise, but buffer stays healthy and resolution is steady: frames are being dropped, but network delivery is not the only explanation. Device decoding or rendering, browser or app behavior, and the video itself are also possibilities.
- Buffer drains or playback stalls, or resolution falls as the problem begins: variable or insufficient timely delivery becomes more plausible. Compare connection types and repeat the observation before drawing a conclusion.
- Connection Speed looks high: treat it as a playback diagnostic estimate, not a guarantee that the video received that throughput continuously. Interpret it with buffer, resolution, and interruptions.
Studies of video playback use frame and buffer measurements to describe viewing conditions, but the overlay is not a complete measurement of every network segment. A University of Würzburg paper reports 11,142 individual video measurements in a YouTube mobile-streaming dataset; that dataset does not diagnose an individual viewer’s connection.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Compare peak and off-peak playback fairly
- Repeat the same observation at different times. Compare a busy evening session with a quieter period. Use the same video, device, app or browser, and playback quality where practical.
- Keep a simple log. For each session, note time, connection type, selected quality, dropped-frame count, buffer health, interruptions, and whether resolution changed. Repeat on more than one day: household use, Wi-Fi interference, and changes in the video or delivery route can affect a single run.
- Change one connection condition at a time. If possible, compare Wi-Fi with mobile data or wired Ethernet. On Wi-Fi, try moving closer to the router and reducing other household network use. If only Wi-Fi performs poorly, signal range, interference, or local network load deserve attention before blaming the ISP. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance is to change your Internet connection, then replay your video, and it also recommends checking router range and interference.
- Compare the device or app if the pattern persists. Try another device or browser/app when available. If the same frame drops occur across connections, device performance, decoding, the app, or the particular video remain possible causes.
A repeated peak-hour pattern that improves off-peak is evidence of a time association. If both Wi-Fi and mobile data show it, that still does not prove a shared provider fault: device or app behavior, video-specific issues, or coincident provider conditions are also possible.
Use speed tests and public reports as supporting context
The TRAI MySpeed service provides network tests; its web tester describes download speed, upload speed, and latency measurements. Running a test near the time of a playback problem can add context, but it is a snapshot and does not measure YouTube delivery throughout the whole viewing session. See TRAI MySpeed.

YouTube’s approximate recommended sustained speeds are a useful resolution benchmark, not proof that a particular video path sustained that rate at every moment:
| Playback resolution | YouTube’s approximate recommended sustained speed |
|---|---|
| 4K | 20 Mbps |
| HD 1080p | 5 Mbps |
| HD 720p | 2.5 Mbps |
| SD 480p | 1.1 Mbps |
| SD 360p | 0.7 Mbps |
These approximate figures are from YouTube Help’s video-resolution guidance; the reviewed page does not state a publication year. A result above a benchmark does not rule out momentary delivery variation, and a lower result by itself does not show what caused a particular dropped frame.

TRAI also publishes aggregate telecom performance reports. Those reports can describe broader service indicators, but they are not a diagnosis of an individual YouTube playback problem; the TRAI performance-indicator report catalog should be read with that distinction in mind.
Common patterns and what to check next
| What you observe | What it supports | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames increase; buffer remains healthy; resolution stays steady | A playback-frame issue, not a confirmed network cause | Compare another device or app; consider decoding or rendering load. |
| Buffer drains, playback stalls, or quality falls during the symptom | Variable or insufficient timely delivery is more plausible | Repeat at another time and compare Wi-Fi, mobile data, or wired Ethernet. |
| Wi-Fi is poor, but another connection works better | The first connection or local Wi-Fi conditions may contribute | Check router distance, interference, and competing household use. |
| Wi-Fi and mobile data both show the same pattern | The evidence still does not identify a shared cause | Check another device or app and repeat with the same video. |
| A speed test looks adequate, but YouTube still buffers | One test is only a momentary measurement | Capture Stats for nerds during playback and compare repeated sessions. |
