Check OBS Studio’s installed version, operating system and download source, then review third-party plugins separately. The official OBS download page listed version 32.2.2, released August 14, 2026, when checked on October 4, 2026. A March 2026 security notice concerned specific plugin downloads from the OBS forum Resource section—not every OBS installation—and OBS said the version of obs-websocket bundled with OBS was unaffected.
Check your OBS version and download source
- Find the installed version. In OBS Studio, open Help > About and note the version number. Also note whether you use Windows, macOS or Linux; on a Mac, identify whether it has an Intel processor or Apple silicon.
- Compare it with the official download page. The OBS download page listed OBS Studio 32.2.2 for Windows, macOS and Linux when checked October 4, 2026; the listing gives its release date as August 14, 2026. Visit the official OBS download page to check the current listing and operating-system requirements. A version number alone does not establish that a system is compromised or safe.
- Check where OBS came from. Prefer obsproject.com or a distribution route identified by OBS. For Linux, the project lists Flathub as an official Flatpak distribution and its PPA for Ubuntu 24.04 and newer; package versions and availability can differ by route. Avoid installers from unfamiliar download sites.
OBS Help says, “As long as you download OBS from this website, you will receive the latest version which is safe to use and free of malware.” That is the project’s statement about downloads from its website; it does not verify third-party plugins or scan your computer. See the OBS Help FAQ.

Check plugins against the March 2026 incident
On March 9, 2026, an OBS forum administrator reported that plugin-resource owner accounts had been compromised through password reuse and malicious versions of resources were uploaded. The notice says the affected downloads were limited to named versions obtained through the OBS forum Resource section. It does not say that every OBS installation or every copy of those plugins was affected.

The notice distinguishes those forum downloads from the component included with OBS: “The version of obs-websocket bundled with OBS is not affected in any way.” Read the full OBS forum security incident notice for its scope and details.
If a plugin matches
If you downloaded one of the listed versions through the forum Resource section during its stated window, follow OBS’s advice: remove it and scan your PC for malware. If the plugin name or version matches but the source or date does not, the notice alone does not establish that your copy was affected. If you are unsure, remove the plugin while you verify its origin and consult the notice rather than treating every copy as malicious.

If you did not install the named resources
The incident notice is not evidence that your OBS core installation was compromised. Continue to use official update routes and review plugins you obtained from other sources on their own provenance and update information.
What the public advisory records do—and do not—show
The OBS Studio repository’s security page showed no published maintainer advisories when checked October 4, 2026. That page state does not erase separate third-party database entries or establish that no security issue has ever been reported. Check the OBS Studio GitHub security advisories for its current status.

A separate, unreviewed GitHub Advisory Database record lists CVE-2024-13524 for Windows OBS Studio versions up to 30.0.2. The record marks affected and patched versions as unknown, and says the vendor disputes whether the reported issue merits reporting because exploitation requires prior privileged access or user compromise. It is not proof that every OBS installation is vulnerable, and it does not identify a fixed version. See the CVE-2024-13524 advisory record.
OBS Studio 32.1 release notes dated April 2, 2026 list improved security for browser sources using local files. That specific change should not be read as confirmation that all reported vulnerabilities are fixed. The OBS Studio 32.1 release notes describe the change.

Update OBS without disrupting a working setup
- Back up your setup. Save your scene collections and profiles before a consequential update. OBS’s 32.2 beta announcement warns that test builds may contain bugs or broken functionality and advises backing up; it recommends the latest stable build for production use. - Check compatibility before installing. Confirm your operating system meets the current requirements and check whether plugins you rely on support the new OBS version. The OBS download page lists the current release and platform options.
- Download through an official route. Use the OBS website or an official distribution channel for your platform. For Linux, confirm the version offered by your chosen route rather than assuming all packages update at the same time.
- Install the stable release for production use. Do not treat beta or test builds as the normal production update; they can have bugs or broken functionality.
- Reopen OBS and verify your setup. Confirm scenes, profiles, audio, video and required plugins work before a live stream or recording.
Account for operating-system limits
Compatibility is not the same as ongoing support. OBS’s macOS compatibility table, dated July 29, 2026, lists last-compatible releases for some older macOS versions, but says those older operating systems are no longer supported. If your Mac cannot run the current supported OBS release, an older compatible build should not be described as receiving ongoing security support. Check the OBS macOS versions page for the current compatibility details.

Security software can scrutinize updated OBS executables and may sometimes flag behavior falsely. OBS Help advises checking the OBS folder whitelist and notes that some products may require executable entries to be refreshed after an update. Before changing security settings, verify that OBS came from an official source and review the specific alert. Do not whitelist a file just because it claims to be OBS; consult the OBS Help guidance on antivirus reports.
