Photos and physical details can reveal warning signs, but no single visual check proves a pair is genuine across every Nike model.
How can I tell if Nike shoes are real?
Start with the seller and the terms of the sale, then use product details as clues—not as a verdict. Nike Argentina advises buying from Nike.ar, a Nike store, or a reliable, reputable distributor. That is official guidance for Argentina, not a universal statement about Nike-authorized sellers in every country. Nike Argentina’s guidance says this is the best way to ensure authentic Nike footwear.

A suspiciously low price, evasive answers, no clear seller identity, missing provenance, mismatched labels or packaging, irregular workmanship, or inconsistent listing details should make you pause. None of these signs alone proves a shoe is counterfeit. Conversely, a convincing logo or box does not establish authenticity.
What should I check before buying online?
Verify the seller and the protections
- Look for a business or seller identity you can verify, recent reviews, and contact information. Be cautious if the seller avoids basic questions or will not explain returns.
- Read the marketplace’s refund and return terms, including deadlines, who handles a dispute, and whether the buyer protection applies to this seller and item.
- Choose a payment method with meaningful protections and keep receipts, listing details, and written messages.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s November 2024 advice is to check marketplace refund and return rules, find out who can help if there is a problem, and use a safe payment method. This is general U.S. marketplace guidance, not Nike-specific authentication advice. Read the FTC’s online shopping tips.

- Leather and synthetic leather are durable with a classic look.
- Full-length Nike Air unit adds cushioning to your step.
- Solid rubber sole is durable and provides traction over various surfaces.
Inspect the listing, not just the brand name
Ask for clear photos of the actual pair if the listing uses stock images. Compare the model name, stated size, condition, included items, and any visible box or product-label details with the description. Ask the seller to explain discrepancies before paying. A label or reference number that appears to match is only one clue; it is not a stand-alone authenticity test.
Which shoe details are useful clues?
An Italian government anti-counterfeiting guide has a section titled “How to recognize fake Nike Shoes.” It suggests examining the Nike symbol, seams, sole, box, label reference number, materials, and spelling. Use these as prompts to inspect carefully, not as a certification checklist: the guide does not establish that its tips cover every current Nike model or are sufficient to authenticate a pair. See the Italian government guide.

Construction varies by model, packaging can be replaced, and counterfeit products can imitate visible details. If something looks wrong, compare it with reliable information for that specific model, ask for clarification, or choose another seller. Do not decide authenticity from a logo, stitch, material feel, smell, box, QR code, or seller-provided certificate alone.

No authentication process should be treated as an automatic guarantee of either authenticity or a refund. For example, SNKRDUNK describes checking sneakers against its proprietary database of authentic and counterfeit references and attaching an anti-tamper tag to pairs it approves. That is the company’s description of its own process, not independent evidence of its error rate or a promise that every buyer dispute will be remedied. Read SNKRDUNK’s authentication description.

Before buying through any service that offers authentication, check which items and sellers are eligible, what the process covers, any fees, claim deadlines, and how disputes or refunds are handled. Authentication is one possible checkpoint; the transaction’s protections still matter.

Nike’s U.S. authorized-retailer page says Nike does not consider applications to sell Nike products on digital marketplaces such as Amazon or eBay. This statement concerns Nike’s retailer application program; it does not prove that every Nike listing on those marketplaces is counterfeit. Check who is actually selling the pair and what return and dispute protections apply. See Nike’s U.S. retail-partner information.

What should I do if the sneakers arrive and seem wrong?
- Keep the shoes, packaging, listing, receipt, and messages with the seller. Photograph any details that differ from the listing.
- Contact the seller promptly and follow the platform’s claim and return deadlines.
- If the seller does not resolve the problem, contact the marketplace. The FTC also advises contacting the card issuer about a payment dispute when appropriate.
