A planet orbiting a single star goes around one star; a circumbinary planet orbits a pair of stars that orbit each other. The distinction describes the planet’s orbit—not its size, composition, or habitability. A planet can orbit two stars, but it does not orbit each star separately in turn.
What is a circumbinary planet?
“Circumbinary” means that the planet’s orbit surrounds a binary star system: two stars gravitationally bound and orbiting one another. By contrast, a planet around a single star orbits one host star. The phrase “two suns” is a handy image for a possible view from a circumbinary planet, but “two stars” is the precise description.

|---|---|---|
| What the planet’s orbit encloses | One star | Both stars in a binary pair |
| Possible sky view | One star may be visible as the host star | Both stars may be visible, depending on viewpoint and visibility |
| Transit geometry | The planet may pass in front of its host star from our line of sight | The planet may pass in front of either moving star; the stars may also eclipse one another when the system’s alignment permits |
How does a circumbinary planet differ from a “two-sun” world in fiction?
The phrase often brings to mind Tatooine, but a two-star sky does not make a planet Earth-like. NASA describes Kepler-16 b as a gas giant about Saturn’s size, not a world with a solid surface on which a person could stand. Seeing two stars would be a feature of the view, not evidence of habitability.

How do astronomers detect planets around binary stars?
In a transit observation, a planet crossing in front of a star blocks a small amount of the system’s light. For Kepler-16, the binary stars also eclipse one another from Earth’s viewpoint, and their positions change as they orbit. The planet can transit either moving star, so the dimming events do not necessarily arrive at regular intervals like a simple single-star example. NASA/JPL’s 2011 discovery account explains that the irregular transit-like dimmings helped show that the third body circled both stars rather than just one.

What are some confirmed circumbinary planet examples?
Kepler-16 b
NASA/JPL announced Kepler-16 b on September 15, 2011, describing it as the first unambiguous circumbinary planet detection. NASA’s catalog lists a radius of 0.7538 Jupiter radii, a mass of 0.333 Jupiter masses, and an orbital period of 228.8 days; these are catalog values accessed October 4, 2026, and may be revised. The period and other measurements describe Kepler-16 b specifically, not circumbinary planets as a class.
Kepler-47
On August 27, 2012, NASA announced Kepler-47 as the first transiting circumbinary system known to contain multiple planets. It demonstrates that a binary pair can have more than one planet orbiting around both stars.

TOI-1338 b and Kepler-1647 b
NASA Science identifies TOI-1338 b as the first circumbinary planet found in TESS data, in 2019. A NASA Goddard summary described Kepler-1647 b as the largest then-known transiting circumbinary planet and gave it a 3.0-year orbital period; that superlative belongs to the historical summary and should not be read as a current record.

No. “Circumbinary” tells you that the planet orbits two stars as a pair. It does not establish whether the planet has a solid surface, liquid water, or conditions suitable for life. NASA/JPL’s 2011 announcement discussed the broader possibility that binary systems could host planets; that general point is not evidence that Kepler-16 b itself is habitable.
