Check Windows Security > Protection history for a blocked-app event. For a warning shown in Microsoft Edge, inspect the warning on the download entry instead: the browser’s warning may indicate that a file is unfamiliar, not that Microsoft has confirmed it is malicious. The steps differ because Windows app blocks and Edge download warnings are separate SmartScreen surfaces.
Check Windows Security for a blocked app
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the relevant event and review its details to see whether it identifies a blocked app or potentially unwanted app.
Microsoft says SmartScreen can block potentially unwanted apps before installation and that the block appears as an event in Protection history. The page retains events for two weeks, and administrator privileges are required to review threat details. See Microsoft’s Protection History guide.

If you choose Actions > Allow for an event, Microsoft says you must download the file again before using it. Allowing it does not, by itself, establish that the file is safe.

Look at the warning attached to the download entry in Edge. SmartScreen can warn when a file has an unknown reputation; that status is not proof that the file is malware. Microsoft’s SmartScreen FAQ states that an Application Reputation warning is not an indication that a download is malicious. Treat it as a reason to verify the file before opening it.

- Confirm that you expected the download and obtained it from the intended publisher or official source.
- Check the publisher and signature information available for the file. An unexpected unsigned file deserves particular caution.
- If you suspect a false positive, open the three-dot menu beside the download alert and choose Report this file as safe. This submits it to Microsoft for review; it is not a general-purpose way to bypass warnings. See Microsoft Edge support for SmartScreen.
Microsoft describes SmartScreen’s unwanted-software protections in its guide to protecting your PC from unwanted software.
Identify which warning you are seeing
| Where the warning appears | Where to check | What it can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Windows app or potentially unwanted app block | Windows Security > Protection history | Expand the event to inspect its details. Events are retained for two weeks, according to Microsoft Support. |
| Download warning in Microsoft Edge | The warning on the Edge download entry | Review the source and publisher details. An unknown-reputation warning is not, by itself, a malware verdict. |
Do not assume every blocked app is a SmartScreen block. On Windows 11, Smart App Control is a separate feature that can block apps based on cloud safety predictions and signature checks. Identify the warning’s wording and location before deciding which feature raised it; Microsoft explains the distinction in its Smart App Control FAQ.

If the event or expected controls are missing
Protection history is time-limited, so a block older than two weeks may no longer appear there. Also, Windows Security and Edge settings can be managed separately. If an option is unavailable or you cannot ignore a warning, the device may be controlled by organizational policy rather than malfunctioning. Microsoft documents SmartScreen settings and policy options in its available SmartScreen settings and SmartScreen overview. On a managed work or school device, ask the administrator before trying to change the setting.
