To set up an AirTag, remove its wrapping and battery tab, bring it close to your iPhone or iPad, and follow the Connect prompt. After naming it and linking it to your Apple Account, you can find it later in the Find My app under Items. From there, check the map and timestamp, then choose directions, a sound, or nearby finding if available.
Before you set up an AirTag
- Use an iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later for the original AirTag. AirTag (2nd generation) requires iOS or iPadOS 26.2.1 or later, according to Apple’s AirTag setup requirements.
- If you have several AirTags, keep all but the one you are pairing away from the device.
- An AirTag can be registered to only one Apple Account at a time. If it was previously registered to someone else, that person must remove it from their account before you can add it.
Set up and register the AirTag
- Prepare the AirTag. Remove the outer wrapping and pull out the battery tab.
- Bring it close to your iPhone or iPad. When the setup prompt appears, tap Connect. If no prompt appears, make sure the device is unlocked and Bluetooth is on, then bring the AirTag close again.
- Name it. Choose a suggested name or category, or enter a custom name and emoji so you can recognize the item in Find My.
- Link it to your Apple Account. Continue through the prompts and tap Done to finish registration.
- Attach it to the item. Place the AirTag with the keys, bag, or other personal item you intend to keep track of. Apple’s setup instructions do not require a particular holder or accessory.
Open Find My and tap Items to verify that the AirTag appears under the name you chose. Apple’s step-by-step instructions are in How to add an AirTag to Find My.

Find a missing item in Find My
- Open the Find My app and tap Items.
- Select the AirTag attached to the missing item.
- Check the map, status, and timestamp before deciding where to search. A displayed position may be current or may be the last place the AirTag was located.

Use Directions to travel to the map location
Tap Directions to open Maps and navigate toward the displayed position. Directions guide you to the map location; they do not establish that the item is still there if the location is old.

Play a sound when the AirTag is nearby
If the Play Sound control is available, use it to make the AirTag emit a sound, then listen while checking likely nearby places. This is useful when the item is close but out of sight.
Use nearby directional finding when available
If Find My offers Find, tap it and follow the on-screen distance and direction guidance. This is Precision Finding; availability depends on the iPhone, settings, and surroundings, so it may not appear for every search.

Understand current and last known locations
A map pin is not automatically a live position. Find My may show a location with its timestamp, or it may show where and when the AirTag was last located. Treat an older pin as a last reported position, not proof that the item remains there.
Apple says a last known location may be available for up to seven days in applicable cases. If more than seven days pass without a location being sent through the Find My network, Find My cannot display that location. When the item cannot currently be located, the app may show No location found or an Offline status. If offered, turn on Notify When Found and allow Find My notifications so you can be alerted if a location becomes available. See Apple’s lost Apple device or AirTag guidance.

When Precision Finding or location updates are unavailable
Find Nearby or Find does not appear
Apple says Precision Finding works with iPhone 15 and later. The iPhone must support Ultra Wideband, Location Services must be on, and Find My needs location access; Apple recommends enabling Precise Location for the most accurate location. Walls and other objects can affect the result. If the control still is not available, use the map and Directions, or try Play Sound if offered. Apple lists these requirements in Use AirTag and Find My to keep track of your personal items.
No current location is shown
Check the status and timestamp. If Find My offers Notify When Found, enable it and check that notifications are allowed. A last known location can help narrow the search, but it is not a promise of continuous tracking or a guarantee that the item is still at that spot.

Sharing an AirTag is different from marking it lost
An AirTag is registered to one Apple Account, but its location can be shared with others. Sharing does not itself mark the item as lost; these are separate Find My actions. If another person is helping search, distinguish access to a shared location from the lost-item recovery options described by Apple in its lost-item guidance.
