Use WPA3 Personal if your router and the devices you rely on support it. If a device that only supports WPA2 needs to connect, try WPA2/WPA3 Transitional; if that still fails, use WPA2 Personal with AES or isolate the older device on a separate network. Avoid WEP, old WPA, TKIP, and open Wi-Fi.
How to choose between WPA3, transitional mode, and WPA2
| Router setting | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| WPA3 Personal | Your router and important devices support WPA3. | WPA2-only devices cannot join a WPA3-only network. |
| WPA2/WPA3 Transitional | You need WPA3 for newer devices and WPA2 support on the same network. | Some older WPA2 devices may still have connection problems, so test them after changing the setting. |
| WPA2 Personal (AES) | A device or router cannot use the newer options. | Use AES if available; avoid older WPA/WPA2 mixed modes and TKIP. |
Apple describes WPA3 Personal as its recommended choice for better security, with transitional mode as the compatibility option for older devices. Microsoft also recommends WPA3 when both the router and PC support it. See Apple’s recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points and Microsoft’s guidance on Wi-Fi security.

What each security mode does
WPA3 Personal
Choose WPA3 Personal when the router and the devices that need access support it. A WPA3-only network will not admit a device that supports only WPA2, so check essential phones, computers, televisions, printers, and smart-home devices before making the change.

Also called mixed mode, this lets WPA3-capable clients use WPA3 while older compatible clients connect with WPA2 Personal (AES). It is a practical bridge when you need both generations of devices on one network, but it is not a guarantee that every legacy device will work. Google notes that some older WPA2 devices may have trouble in transition mode; verify the actual devices in your home after switching. See Google Nest’s Wi-Fi network compatibility guidance.

WPA2 Personal (AES)
Use WPA2 Personal with AES as a fallback if newer settings are unavailable or incompatible. The AES detail matters: do not treat an option labeled simply WPA/WPA2, or one using TKIP, as an equivalent secure fallback. Apple advises selecting AES as the encryption or cipher type when available.
Change the router setting and check your devices
- Open your router’s administration app or web interface and locate its Wi-Fi security setting. Names and menu locations vary by router and firmware.
- Check whether the devices that matter to your household support WPA3. Consult their documentation if support is unclear.
- If they do, select WPA3 Personal, save the setting, and reconnect the devices you rely on.
- If a WPA2-only device cannot join, switch to WPA2/WPA3 Transitional and test whether it connects reliably.
- If it still fails, use WPA2 Personal (AES) as a fallback, or put the legacy device on a separate network if your router supports one. Keep WEP, old WPA, and TKIP disabled.
- Set a strong, unique Wi-Fi passphrase whichever mode you use.
Strengthen the network beyond the security mode
The security mode protects authentication and encryption for the Wi-Fi link; it does not replace a strong passphrase or broader network precautions. The NSA’s 2023 home-network security guidance recommends a passphrase of at least 20 characters with WPA3 or WPA2/3 configurations. It also recommends separating primary, guest, and IoT networks where feasible. These measures improve network hygiene but do not guarantee that every connected device is secure.

When a router upgrade makes sense
You do not need to replace a router simply because WPA3 exists. Consider an upgrade if your current router cannot offer the security mode you need and you decide newer support is worth the cost; Microsoft recommends considering an upgrade when an old router lacks newer security standards. See Microsoft’s Wi-Fi security guidance. Check the replacement router’s supported modes and your devices’ compatibility before changing equipment.
