To tell whether a gold or silver quote is live, check three things on the source page: the exact price type, an explicit real-time or delay label, and a timestamp that includes a timezone. Then compare it with a source that states its own data status and shows the same kind of price. A timestamp tells you when the page says it updated; by itself, it does not prove that the underlying feed is live.
Check what kind of gold or silver price you are viewing
Before judging freshness, identify the number on the screen. “Gold price” can refer to different instruments or reference values, which follow different update schedules and should not be treated as interchangeable.

- Spot quote: A market quote for precious metal, often displayed as a continuously updating price. Check the provider’s own status label; the phrase “spot price” does not establish whether its feed is real time.
- Futures quote: A price for a specific exchange-traded contract. Note the exchange and delivery month, and compare it with that same contract rather than a spot quote or benchmark.
- LBMA auction benchmark: A scheduled reference price, not a continuous quote. The LBMA Gold Price is set at 10:30 and 15:00 London time, while the LBMA Silver Price is set at noon London time. See the LBMA Precious Metal Prices.
- Settlement: A calculated reference value published on its own schedule. It is not the same thing as a live quote; CME says settlement datasets can be delivered at midnight, 10 minutes after publication on MDP, or two hours after publication, depending on the dataset and product tier. See CME’s settlement data FAQ.
Also match the displayed unit and currency. LBMA describes its gold and silver benchmarks in US dollars per troy ounce; a converted local-currency price can differ without indicating a delay.
Look for a feed-status label and timestamp
Inspect the text next to the quote, chart, or market-data panel. Look for labels such as “real time,” “delayed,” a delay in minutes, “settlement,” or the name of a benchmark. Then find “Last Updated” or another timestamp and note its timezone.

- The HP EliteDisplay E243 will expand your productivity with uninterrupted views of one screen or many with a 3-sided micro-edge bezel that supports virtually seamless arrays
CME’s public Gold Futures Overview labels its market data delayed by at least 10 minutes and displays a “Last Updated” time. Separately, CME says delayed data is published 10 minutes after its original dissemination on the real-time feed in its settlement data FAQ. Those statements describe CME data, not every gold or silver quote online.
A timestamp is useful evidence of when a page says it refreshed, but it does not certify the feed’s status. A frequently changing number or a current-looking time is not enough to call a quote live if the provider does not say whether the data is real time or delayed.

Once you know the price type, compare it with a source that identifies its data status. Keep these details aligned:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Instrument: Compare a futures contract with the same contract and delivery month, a spot quote with another spot quote, or a benchmark with that same benchmark.
- Unit and currency: Check whether both values are quoted in the same currency and per the same unit, such as US dollars per troy ounce.
- Timing: Note the timestamp, timezone, and—if it is a benchmark—the scheduled auction time.
- Publication cadence: Distinguish a continuously quoted market value from an auction benchmark or settlement value.
- Access terms: Some faster benchmark data is available only through a market-data redistributor or administrator, subject to access and licensing arrangements.
For example, the LBMA public website publishes its daily auction prices with a delay to midnight London time on the day they are set. ICE Benchmark Administration describes intraday data for the LBMA Gold and Silver benchmarks as available four hours after original publication, with delayed data at midnight London time. These are specific access schedules for those benchmarks, not a general delay rule for precious-metals sites. See LBMA’s explanation of daily auction prices and ICE IBA’s About page.

Account for auction times and non-publication days
An LBMA benchmark may remain unchanged even when another quote moves, because it is set at scheduled auctions rather than refreshed continuously. The LBMA says its Silver Price auction takes place at noon UK time each working day in its Silver Price FAQ. Its precious-metal prices are not published on weekends or UK bank holidays, so a benchmark display that has not changed on those days does not, by itself, show that a feed is broken.
A practical check in six steps
- Read the label beside the price. Note whether it says “real time,” “delayed,” gives a delay in minutes, or identifies a benchmark or settlement.
- Find the timestamp. Record the “Last Updated” time and timezone. Treat it as a clue, not proof of a live feed.
- Identify the price type. Determine whether you are looking at spot, a named futures contract, an LBMA auction benchmark, or a settlement value.
- Check the relevant schedule. For an auction benchmark, account for the auction time and publication calendar; for settlement, check the dataset’s stated publication cadence.
- Cross-check a matching source. Use a source that identifies its own data status and compare the same instrument, currency, and unit. CME’s gold futures page is one example that expressly labels its data delayed by at least 10 minutes.
- Mark unclear data as unverified. If the provider does not state whether the feed is real time or delayed, you cannot confirm its freshness from the displayed number or timestamp alone.
What you can conclude from the page
If a source explicitly says “delayed,” use that stated delay for that source and product. If it says “real time,” note which instrument and feed the label applies to. If it shows only a timestamp, or no status at all, the quote’s freshness is unverified. Do not apply one site’s delay to another provider, or treat a scheduled benchmark as a continuously updating market quote.
