Gold has a larger investment and central-bank role; silver has a greater industrial and technology exposure. That difference can make silver more sensitive to economic cycles, while gold may draw defensive demand during periods of uncertainty. Neither metal has a single price-setting factor, and these drivers do not reliably predict the next move.
What moves both gold and silver?
Real interest rates and monetary policy
Neither metal pays interest. When investors expect real yields—the return on interest-bearing assets after inflation—to rise, holding a non-yielding metal can become less attractive by comparison. Lower expected real yields can therefore support gold and silver, but the relationship is not automatic: currency moves, demand, risk appetite and investor positioning can offset it. The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago’s 2021 discussion of gold prices identifies real interest rates and inflation expectations among commonly cited considerations.

The US dollar
Both metals are widely quoted in US dollars. A weaker dollar can make dollar-priced metal less expensive for buyers using other currencies and may support demand; a stronger dollar can have the opposite effect. This is a tendency, not a rule or a complete explanation. The World Gold Council’s 2026 outlook described dollar weakness and marginally lower rates as factors supporting gold in 2025, alongside other influences.

Inflation can increase interest in assets perceived as stores of value, but inflation by itself does not determine either metal’s price. Expected policy responses, real yields, the dollar and investor behavior all matter. Gold may attract investment demand during geopolitical tension, financial stress or concern about purchasing power; silver’s industrial exposure can make it respond differently to the same episode.

The World Gold Council’s account of 2025 is explicitly multi-factor: it includes geopolitical and geoeconomic uncertainty, dollar weakness, slightly lower rates, investment and central-bank demand, positioning, momentum and economic growth. A rate decision, inflation report or geopolitical event may be influential without explaining the whole move.
Why gold and silver have different demand profiles
Gold: investment, central banks and a large above-ground stock
Gold demand includes investment, central-bank purchases, jewellery and technology. Central banks may buy or sell for reserve-management reasons, not simply in reaction to the latest price. Gold is also durable, and much of the metal already mined remains available to be resold, recycled or reallocated. As a result, newly mined supply is only one part of the amount that can reach the market; mine output alone does not neatly explain short-term price changes.

Silver: industrial uses add business-cycle exposure
Silver serves investment and consumer markets as well as industrial and technology applications. That industrial demand ties it more closely to manufacturing prospects and economic activity. The World Gold Council warns that silver’s industrial share can expose it to pro-cyclical risk sentiment, increasing the odds that it trades more like industrial metals and risky assets during market stress or economic deceleration. This does not mean silver always falls when growth weakens; investment flows and other forces can pull the price in another direction.
What the reported silver deficit does—and does not—tell you
The Silver Institute’s World Silver Survey 2026, published in April 2026 and reporting 2025 market data, estimated a 2025 silver market deficit of 40.3 million ounces (1,252 tonnes). The survey reported that deficit despite a 7% increase in supply and a 2% contraction in overall demand. In the survey’s accounting, a deficit means reported demand exceeded reported supply.

A deficit can contribute to market tightness, but it does not guarantee a higher price. Inventories, recycling, substitution, investment demand and expectations also affect how a supply-demand balance translates into prices. The figure describes the survey’s estimate for 2025; it is not a price target or a forecast.
Why the metals can move apart
| Factor | Gold | Silver |
|---|---|---|
| Demand mix | Investment and central-bank demand are prominent, alongside jewellery and technology. | Industrial and technology uses form a larger part of the demand mix, alongside investment and consumer products. |
| Business-cycle sensitivity | Can attract defensive investment demand in periods of uncertainty, though it also has consumer and industrial uses. | Industrial demand can benefit from stronger activity and weaken when manufacturing prospects deteriorate. |
| Supply context | A large existing stock can be recycled or reallocated, so mine output is not the whole supply picture. | Supply includes mine output, recycling and inventories; a reported deficit is relevant context, not a standalone price signal. |
| Potential divergence | May be supported by defensive demand even when cyclical assets are under pressure. | May gain an additional lift when industrial optimism and investor interest are both strong, or face pressure when growth expectations deteriorate. |
These are differences in exposure, not fixed rules. Shared forces can affect both metals at once, while the demand mix and market flows determine whether one responds more strongly—or moves in the opposite direction.

Investor flows and positioning can intensify a move after expectations change. The Bank for International Settlements’ March 2026 Quarterly Review described a sharp precious-metals reversal in late January and February 2026: silver had doubled during 2025 and risen by more than 50% in January 2026, then fell about 30% in a single day in late January. The BIS linked the episode to changing dollar and monetary-policy expectations, retail flows into gold and silver funds, and market mechanics. It is an example of how quickly prices and positioning can turn, not proof that one factor caused the entire decline or an indication of what prices will do next.

A practical way to compare the two
- Start with the demand mix: ask whether the news concerns investment or central-bank demand, industrial activity, or both.
- Separate shared macro forces from metal-specific ones: rates and the dollar can affect both, while manufacturing expectations can matter more for silver.
- Consider flows and time horizon: positioning can amplify short-term moves, so a supply statistic or macro headline may not explain the price response on its own.
- Treat ratios and deficits as context: neither a gold-to-silver price ratio nor a market deficit is a reliable timing signal by itself.
