Choose a laptop for offline AI by starting with the model you plan to run—not its “AI PC” label. Check whether the model fits in available memory at your chosen quantization and context length, confirm that your runtime supports the laptop’s operating system and processor or GPU, and leave room for downloaded model files on the SSD. For a broad starting point, LM Studio recommends 16GB or more of RAM on Apple silicon Macs and Windows PCs, plus at least 4GB of dedicated VRAM on Windows; these are that app’s recommendations, not guarantees for every model or runtime.
Start with the model and app you want to use
“Run AI offline” can mean using a downloaded language model in a local chat app, using a particular on-device feature in an operating system, or running a custom workflow. Those are not interchangeable. Before buying, identify a model, a runtime that supports it, and a realistic target for context length and response speed. Then check the runtime’s current operating-system, processor or GPU, and model-format support.

- Model: Identify its parameter size and available quantized versions. A smaller or more heavily quantized model generally needs less memory, though quality and speed depend on the model and workload.
- Context: Decide how much text the model must consider at once. Longer contexts can add to memory use.
- Runtime: Confirm that the app supports your laptop’s hardware and can load the model format you intend to download.
- Offline requirement: Check that the specific model and feature work without a server connection. Some apps need internet for sign-in, downloads, updates, or particular features even if local inference is available.
Hardware specifications alone do not establish that a particular model will run. Compatibility and memory needs vary by runtime, model architecture, context, and workload.

Memory is usually the central sizing question. The model’s weights occupy memory, and the runtime, operating system, context, and other open apps need room too. An estimate based only on model parameters and precision is a starting point, not a laptop minimum. Quantization can reduce weight storage, but it does not eliminate runtime overhead.

Ollama’s published model-scheduling examples show reported memory use changing with workload and context length. NVIDIA likewise explains how parameter count and precision affect memory, while noting that quantization can reduce demand. Do not assume the advertised model size equals the total working memory required.
Apple silicon: consider unified memory capacity
Apple silicon uses unified memory shared across the system and GPU, so consider the full memory capacity available to the model rather than looking for a separate VRAM figure. Apple’s current MacBook Pro specifications list configurations up to 128GB of unified memory; that is a maximum listed configuration, not a requirement for typical local models. LM Studio recommends 16GB or more for supported Apple silicon Macs and says 8GB Macs may work with smaller models and modest contexts. Check the app’s current requirements and the exact Mac configuration before buying.

Windows laptops: assess RAM and dedicated GPU memory together
For Windows, distinguish system RAM from a discrete GPU’s dedicated VRAM. LM Studio recommends 16GB or more of system RAM and at least 4GB of dedicated VRAM for Windows. That baseline does not mean every model will fit or run quickly. NVIDIA’s local-AI overview covers GeForce RTX configurations from 6GB to 32GB of VRAM; the capacity varies by specific GPU and laptop configuration.

GPU offloading can let some workloads use a GPU even when the entire model does not fit in VRAM. It is not a substitute for enough system memory: NVIDIA’s explanation says the system still needs enough RAM for the full model. Verify the intended runtime’s behavior and requirements rather than assuming offloading will make an undersized laptop adequate.

Compare laptop options against the same checklist
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Memory available to the model | For Apple silicon, unified memory capacity; for a Windows GPU laptop, system RAM and dedicated VRAM. Leave headroom for the OS, runtime, context, and other apps. |
| Model and context | The target model, quantization, context length, and any multimodal workload. These change memory demand. |
| Runtime support | Supported operating system, processor or GPU backend, and model format in the current documentation for the app you plan to use. |
| Offline behavior | Whether the app can keep and run the model locally, and whether the particular feature still needs a server, account, or periodic connection. |
| Storage | SSD room for model downloads and alternate versions, separate from working memory. Local model weights must be downloaded before they can be used offline. |
| Portability and power | How the configured laptop’s weight, heat, battery use, and cost fit your needs. Higher memory capacity and stronger GPUs can involve trade-offs; compare actual configurations. |
Check what “offline” means for built-in AI features
AI branding does not prove that every feature works without an internet connection. Apple’s developer documentation distinguishes its on-device Apple Intelligence model from Private Cloud Compute: Apple describes the on-device model as usable without a network connection, while the server-based Private Cloud Compute path is not offline. Apple Intelligence availability also depends on supported devices, software, language, and region. Check the network behavior and availability of the specific feature you intend to use, and do not treat this as a guarantee about third-party apps.
Apple says Apple Intelligence on-device models download to supported devices and specifies a storage requirement on its support page. That storage is separate from memory used while a model runs. Third-party local model libraries also require room for downloaded weights, and keeping multiple models or versions increases the SSD space needed.

Use published requirements as a baseline, not a promise
LM Studio’s current system-requirements page is useful if that is the app you plan to use: it lists Apple silicon M1, M2, M3, and M4 with macOS 14 or later, recommends 16GB or more on Mac, and recommends 16GB of RAM plus 4GB of dedicated VRAM on Windows. It also notes that smaller models and modest contexts may work on 8GB Macs. These figures describe LM Studio guidance; they do not establish requirements for every local-AI app, nor do they guarantee a particular model’s speed or fit.
For a sense of why model size alone can mislead, NVIDIA’s October 2024 LM Studio example estimates about 13.5GB for a 27-billion-parameter model at 4-bit before overhead, and cites 19GB of VRAM for fully GPU-loaded Gemma 2 27B in that example. Treat those as illustrative figures from that dated example, not a current laptop recommendation or a universal memory formula.
Quick Recap
A practical buying sequence
- Choose a target model and runtime. Confirm the app supports the operating system and hardware in the laptop configuration you are considering.
- Set a realistic context and speed goal. Larger contexts and workloads can require more memory; decide what “usable” means for your tasks.
- Compare memory with headroom. Account for unified memory or system RAM and dedicated VRAM as applicable, along with runtime and operating-system needs. Do not equate VRAM with total system memory.
- Check the offline path. Verify which features run locally and which need a network, account, or server. Download model files before you expect to work disconnected.
- Check SSD capacity and portability. Reserve storage for model files and updates, then weigh the actual configuration’s size, power needs, and cost against how you travel or work.
- Recheck live compatibility before purchase. App support, device availability, and model requirements can change; consult the current runtime and device documentation for the exact configuration.
