To check whether two cold or flu medicines share active ingredients, compare the complete Active ingredients lists on their Drug Facts panels—not the brand names or front-of-package claims. If an ingredient appears on both labels, do not assume the products are safe to take together; ask a pharmacist or health care professional.
Compare the Drug Facts panels
- Find the Drug Facts panel on each package. Use the full label, not just the front of the box or bottle.
- Read every entry under “Active ingredients.” Combination medicines may list several ingredients, and a cold or flu product may share an ingredient with another type of over-the-counter medicine.
- Compare ingredient names line by line. Brand names and symptom claims do not tell you whether formulas overlap. Products with similar names can have different formulas, while products with different names can contain the same ingredient.
- Compare the rest of the label before making a choice. Check the amount per labeled unit, “Uses,” “Directions,” age limits, and “Warnings.” These details help you understand what each package says; they do not establish that the products are interchangeable or safe to combine.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises reading OTC labels and selecting a product that treats only the symptoms you actually have. See the FDA’s OTC pain reliever and fever reducer guidance and its Medicines in My Home articles.

What to do if both labels list the same ingredient
Do not take both products together just because they have different brand names or treat different symptoms. The FDA advises avoiding multiple OTC medicines with the same active ingredient, or asking a pharmacist or health care professional if you are unsure. A label comparison alone cannot determine whether a particular combination is appropriate for you.
Pay special attention to acetaminophen
Acetaminophen is a common ingredient in medicines for pain or fever and may also appear in combination cold and flu products. Check every product’s active-ingredient list before using more than one medicine. Taking too much acetaminophen can cause severe liver damage. The FDA recommends keeping track of the amount across medicines and asking a health professional if you have questions. Its consumer guidance notes that prescription labels may use shortened forms such as “APAP”; if you see an unfamiliar abbreviation, have a professional interpret it rather than guessing. Read FDA guidance on acetaminophen.

When the labels are unclear
If you cannot tell whether two ingredients are the same, or whether a combination is suitable, show a pharmacist both packages and your full medication list. Include prescription medicines and other OTC products. Do not infer a dose from a general label-reading guide or treat the absence of an ingredient on the front of a package as proof that it is absent from the full label. The FDA’s advice is simple: “When in doubt, reach out to our pharmacists.”
