A forward deployed engineer (FDE) works between software engineering and customer delivery: understanding a customer’s problem, designing and building a solution, and helping put it into production. The title does not define a standard job description, so coding expectations, travel, pay, location, and career paths must be checked against each specific opening.
What does a forward deployed engineer do?
An FDE helps turn a customer’s technical need into working software. In OpenAI’s FDE posting, that work runs from discovery and technical scoping through system design, implementation, and production rollout, with coordination across the customer and internal product, research, security, and partnerships teams. OpenAI’s separate forward deployed software engineer (FDSWE) posting describes building full-stack solutions on customer infrastructure.

That is a useful picture of the work, not a universal job definition. Similar titles can describe different balances of engineering, deployment, and customer coordination. Read the responsibilities in the actual posting rather than assuming the title alone tells you what the day-to-day role entails.
How much coding does the job involve?
Coding can be a core responsibility. OpenAI’s New York City FDE posting asks for production-grade frontend and backend code, and says the engineer may contribute directly when doing so is needed to make progress or clarify the solution. Its FDSWE posting describes full-stack development and coding alongside customer technical teams.

Other similarly named jobs—including deployment strategist roles—may allocate time differently between implementation and coordination. Before applying, look for concrete references to shipping production code, owning features, building reusable software, and working in the customer’s environment. Those details are more informative than the FDE label.
How much travel should an FDE expect?
Travel varies by opening and location; the figures below are employer-posted estimates, not occupation-wide averages.
Rank #2
| Employer and role | Posted travel expectation | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI FDE, New York City and San Francisco | Up to 50% | Current FDE postings accessed in 2026; each states travel up to 50%. New York City posting; San Francisco posting. |
| Anthropic FDE | Estimated 25%, depending on location | Current posting accessed in 2026; potential travel to customer sites. Anthropic posting. |
Check whether the posting describes a requirement, an estimate, or travel that depends on the assigned location. A role with frequent customer-site work may also affect your preferred home base and weekly routine.
What does a forward deployed engineer earn?
These are ranges from particular employer postings, not market-wide averages or guaranteed offers.
| Employer and opening | Posted compensation | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI FDE, New York City | $185,000–$300,000 plus equity | Range listed in the current NYC FDE posting accessed in 2026. The figure is tied to that opening; see the posting. |
| Anthropic FDE | $280,000–$320,000 annual salary | Range listed in the current FDE posting accessed in 2026; see the posting. |
Compare the role, location, level, base salary, equity, and other package terms before drawing conclusions from the numbers. The cited postings do not establish an authoritative occupational average.
What skills and experience do employers ask for?
The requirements differ by employer and opening. Two current postings illustrate the mix of technical depth and customer-facing work.
| Posting | Experience and technical requirements | Other emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI FDE, New York City | 5+ years of engineering or technical deployment experience that includes customer-facing work; production-grade frontend and backend coding; experience with LLM or generative-model systems. | Working through ambiguity and coordinating with customers and internal teams. Posting. |
| Anthropic FDE | 4+ years in a technical customer-facing role, or software engineering with consulting experience; production LLM experience and Python. | Strong communication for customer discovery and explaining technical concepts to different stakeholders. Posting. |
Use these as examples of what particular employers request, not as a universal qualification checklist. The role’s technical domain and customer environment can change which skills matter most.

Work arrangements are specific to the opening. OpenAI’s reviewed New York City and San Francisco FDE listings specify three office days each week and travel up to 50%. Anthropic’s reviewed FDE posting lists roles in New York City, San Francisco, and Seattle, with estimated customer-site travel of 25% depending on location. These listings do not establish that FDE roles generally are remote or office-based.
Best Value
Check the listed hiring location, required office days, and customer-site expectations together. A position described as hybrid may still involve substantial travel, while a location list does not by itself explain the weekly work arrangement.

Some employers describe growth through the work itself. OpenAI’s FDE posting says engineers codify working patterns into reusable tools or playbooks and share field feedback that can inform product and research. Palantir’s Forward Deployed AI Engineer posting says it values individual strengths, skills, and interests rather than relying on traditional career ladders (Palantir posting).
Those descriptions show possible ways customer deployments can build experience and influence internal work; they do not establish a standard promotion ladder or promise a move into product, research, management, or another role. Ask how progression is evaluated for the particular team and level.

When several titles look similar, compare the actual duties and conditions side by side:
- Coding depth: Does the role involve production feature work and reusable software, or is it weighted toward deployment coordination?
- Customer-embedded scope: Does it include discovery, architecture, prototyping, production rollout, and post-launch adoption?
- Travel and location: What travel estimate is stated, where is the job based, are office days specified, and how much customer-site work is expected?
- Compensation: Is the posted amount base salary or another compensation measure? Compare level, location, equity, and other package details.
- Technical domain: Is the work focused on enterprise software, frontier models, government, healthcare, or another sector?
- Learning and progression: Does the employer describe reusable deployment patterns, field feedback reaching product or research, or specific progression criteria?
Pay particular attention to the exact title and responsibilities: employers can list several distinct forward deployed roles, and the same title need not imply the same engineering-to-customer balance.
