Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose an over-the-counter cold or flu medicine by identifying the symptom you most want to relieve, then checking the active ingredients and Drug Facts label. A single-ingredient product may be enough; a multi-symptom medicine is not automatically better. These medicines can temporarily ease symptoms, but they do not cure a cold.
Match the medicine category to the symptom
Cold and flu products contain different kinds of active ingredients for different symptoms. Start with the main problem, rather than a broad “cold and flu” promise. These categories are general information, not a recommendation for a particular person or product.

| Symptom | Category to look for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fever, headache, or minor aches | Pain reliever or fever reducer, such as acetaminophen | Check every medicine you take for the same active ingredient, and follow the label directions. |
| Stuffy nose | Nasal decongestant | Read the specific product’s warnings and interaction information; a decongestant may not suit every health condition. |
| Runny nose or sneezing | Antihistamine | Check the label for possible side effects, warnings, and interactions. |
| Dry, bothersome cough | Cough suppressant | Follow the product label and avoid doubling up on ingredients in other medicines. |
| Mucus-producing cough | Expectorant | This category is intended to loosen mucus; it does not treat or cure the underlying illness. |
| Sore throat or mild cough discomfort | Lozenges or cough drops, fluids, and other supportive care | Do not give lozenges to children under four. Choose age-appropriate care. |
For comfort measures such as saline nasal spray or drops, a cool-mist humidifier, or throat lozenges, follow product directions and age guidance. These measures are not interchangeable with medicines aimed at a specific symptom.
Compare the ingredients, not just the product name
Many products marketed for several symptoms combine multiple active ingredients. That can mean taking something you do not need, or accidentally taking the same ingredient from two products. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) specifically warns that acetaminophen may appear in more than one medicine.

- NON-DROWSY DAYTIME COLD AND FLU MEDICINE provides multi-symptom relief of headache, fever, sore throat, nasal congestion, cough, and minor aches and pains
- NIGHTTIME COLD AND FLU MEDICINE provides multi-symptom relief of headache, fever, sore throat, sneezing, runny nose, cough, and minor aches and pains
- PAIN RELIEVER AND FEVER REDUCER: Both Daytime and Nighttime cold medicine contain acetaminophen to help relieve aches, fever and sore throat
- COLD AND FLU: Influenza (flu) and the common cold are respiratory illnesses caused by viruses. A cold medicine like Cold & Flu Relief Multi-Symptom Daytime/Nighttime can help
For example, a cold-and-flu product may already contain a pain reliever. Adding a separate acetaminophen product without checking both labels can result in an unintended duplicate dose. FDA states that the maximum recommended adult dose of acetaminophen is 4,000 milligrams per day across all medicines. This is a safety ceiling, not a personal dosing target; follow the labels and ask a healthcare professional about your circumstances.
No named brand is established here as superior. Compare products by the symptom they target, their active ingredients, age suitability, warnings and interactions, dosage form, and whether you actually need treatment for every symptom listed on the front of the package.

Read the Drug Facts label before taking a dose
The Drug Facts label is the practical guide to a nonprescription medicine. FDA says it includes uses, directions, warnings, interactions, side effects, pregnancy or breastfeeding information, and when to stop use or seek advice. Formulations differ, so read the label every time—even if you have used a similar product before.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Check the active ingredients and compare them with every prescription and over-the-counter medicine you take.
- Follow the directions for dose, timing, and duration; do not assume two products with similar names have the same formula.
- Review warnings and interactions, especially if you have a chronic condition or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Ask a pharmacist or clinician if you cannot tell whether a product is appropriate for you or whether ingredients overlap.
Should you give children cough or cold medicine?
Follow current local guidance and the product’s age directions; recommendations are framed differently by U.S. health agencies. CDC says over-the-counter cough and cold medicines are not recommended for children younger than six. FDA says not to give cough-and-cold products containing a decongestant or antihistamine to children under two, and notes that manufacturers voluntarily label these products “do not use in children under 4 years of age.” These are distinct recommendations, not one universal age cutoff.

For a child, use only a product labeled for that child’s age and follow its directions. FDA advises using the measuring device supplied with the medicine, not a household spoon, and not giving children medicine packaged for adults. Ask a pediatric clinician or pharmacist about fever-medicine dosing. FDA also says not to give lozenges to children under four.
The risks are not merely theoretical: FDA estimated that 1,519 children under age two were treated in U.S. emergency departments for adverse events, including overdoses, associated with cough-and-cold medicines in 2004–2005. This is historical context, not a current estimate of incidence.

When to ask a healthcare professional
Seek professional advice if the person who is ill is a young child, is pregnant or breastfeeding, takes other medicines, has a chronic condition, or has label warnings that are difficult to interpret. Contact a healthcare provider for severe or concerning symptoms. If flu or COVID-19 is diagnosed, antiviral treatment may be an option; symptom-relief products are not a substitute for assessment.
