To estimate whether an upcoming PC game will run on your computer, compare the game’s current official system requirements with your PC’s actual CPU, graphics card, RAM, storage, and operating system. Treat any pre-release compatibility result as an estimate: minimum requirements do not promise smooth play or a particular frame rate.
Start with the requirements for the exact PC version
Open the publisher’s page or the store page for the game’s PC edition and the storefront you plan to use. On Steam, scroll to the game’s “System Requirements” section. Steam advises checking both hardware and compatible operating systems; a game that is unavailable for your platform may simply not support that operating system. Record the listed minimum and recommended processor, graphics card, memory, storage, and OS. Also note any stated graphics API or feature requirements. Publishers can revise requirements before launch, so check the official listing again close to release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFind your PC’s actual specifications
On Windows, use the built-in system tools to identify the components you will compare. Microsoft explains how to open DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag): search for dxdiag and open it. On the System tab, look under System Information for the DirectX Version. Use the display information to find the graphics device; Windows System settings or Task Manager can show your processor and installed memory. Check available storage in Windows

Check the GPU’s exact model, not just a broad family name. Laptop and desktop versions of a similarly named graphics card can differ. For storage, compare the game’s required free space with the space currently available on the drive where you would install it.

The DirectX version shown in Windows is not proof that the GPU supports every graphics feature a game requires. Steam notes that a card may have a hardware shader limitation even when the computer has a suitable DirectX software version installed. Steam’s explanation of hardware and software requirements
Understand what a compatibility checker can—and cannot—tell you
A third-party checker can make a specs-to-requirements comparison easier, but its result depends on the accuracy of its hardware detection or the details you enter, as well as the requirements data it uses. It compares specifications; it does not run the unreleased game on your exact PC. System Requirements Lab’s Can You Run It checker

Minimum requirements are a screening threshold, not a promise of smooth performance. Recommended requirements also need context: unless the publisher specifies resolution, graphics settings, and a frame-rate target, “recommended” does not establish what experience to expect at those settings. A pass/fail label cannot fill in those missing details.

If performance matters, in-game measurements provide better evidence about your own PC than a pre-release comparison. Once the game is released, use a built-in benchmark if it offers one, and run it at the resolution and settings you intend to use. While playing, Steam’s performance monitor can show FPS, CPU and GPU metrics, and system and video memory. These readings can help you see how the game behaves on your setup rather than infer performance from a requirements list alone. Steam’s announcement of the in-game performance monitor
Why an estimate can change
Before and after launch, requirements and real-world performance may change as developers update the game, release patches, or improve drivers. For an upcoming title, use the current official requirements as a preliminary check, then revisit them near launch. If you need a dependable answer about your own resolution, settings, and frame rate, wait for the game to become available and measure it with its benchmark or performance monitoring.
