Why Is My YouTube Sleep Sounds Livestream Showing a Black Screen Overnight?

A black screen alone does not reveal whether your sleep-sounds stream stopped sending video or whether playback failed on a viewer’s device. Start with the stream’s preview in YouTube Live Control Room, check whether YouTube is receiving the encoder feed, then compare playback on another device before changing settings.

First, find out where the picture goes black

  1. Check the Live Control Room preview. Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the outgoing video. YouTube recommends checking the preview before starting an encoder broadcast and monitoring the stream’s audio and video while it is live. If the preview is black, the problem is likely in the feed being sent to YouTube; if it looks normal, continue with a playback comparison.
  2. Check whether YouTube is receiving the encoder feed. For streams monitored through the Live Streaming API, YouTube documents status.streamStatus set to active as meaning its servers are receiving data from the encoder. That confirms receipt of data, but does not by itself prove the video picture is correct. See Google for Developers’ “Life of a Broadcast”.
  3. Compare the public stream on another device. If the creator preview looks good, open the public stream on a second device. If only one device shows black, that points toward that device or its playback path rather than establishing that the outgoing feed is black. This comparison is a diagnostic inference, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
  4. Inspect the encoder if its preview is black or YouTube is not receiving the feed. Verify that the intended video source or scene is present and that the encoder is still sending to the stream. YouTube’s stream key and server URL are the connection details the encoder uses to send the feed; the key does not fix a missing or black video source. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

What the overnight symptom does—and does not—tell you

The description alone does not establish whether audio continued, whether every viewer saw black, or whether the stream’s archive was affected. Nor does an active status guarantee a usable picture: it indicates data is reaching YouTube, not that the data contains the intended image. Use the preview and the second-device check to narrow down which part of the path needs attention.

Test the setup before leaving it unattended

Before relying on a sleep-sounds stream overnight, run an unlisted or public test. YouTube recommends checking that the event is accessible from the channel and watch pages and from mobile devices. If you record a local archive, verify that the file is growing during the broadcast and check its integrity afterward. These checks can reveal problems before you leave the setup running unattended. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.

Auto-start, auto-stop, and stream keys are not black-screen repairs

YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings control whether streaming can be started or stopped from the encoder. The API documentation says that, when auto-stop is enabled, YouTube automatically ends a broadcast about a minute after the encoder stops transmitting video. That describes broadcast lifecycle behavior; it does not say auto-stop repairs a black picture while video transmission continues.

YouTube documents resetting a stream key as a response to a compromised key, not as a routine fix for a black-screen symptom. Avoid resetting it unless there is a reason to believe the key has been compromised or another specific connection problem calls for it. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance and the broadcast lifecycle documentation.
