You can watch a SaxaVord rocket launch in person only through the spaceport’s authorised viewing arrangements. Passes are limited and offered to Unst residents first; visitors should check SaxaVord’s latest announcements before booking travel. The operator says launches will also be livestreamed, which is the lower-commitment option when a launch window may last weeks and a specific launch day can change.
How public viewing works
SaxaVord Spaceport, at Lamba Ness on Unst in Shetland, says it will make a limited number of passes available for an authorised viewing area. Unst residents are offered passes first; any places not taken up may then be offered more widely. The operator states a maximum of 600 viewer passes, but that is a cap—not a promise that 600 passes will be available for every launch. Check the spaceport’s viewing announcement and homepage for updates.

Detailed arrangements are to be published closer to test-flight or launch days. The operator’s public information does not establish a current application form, fee, named public viewing location, or pass-release date. Do not assume you can arrive and find a public place to watch: wait for SaxaVord’s instructions and use only the authorised area.
Understand the launch window before making plans
A launch window is a period in which a launch may take place, not a guaranteed launch date. SaxaVord says a window may span several weeks, with launches allowed only on specified days and within specified hours. Its published policy is to give at least 24 hours’ notice of a planned launch. That notice does not guarantee the attempt will proceed; treat schedules as provisional until the operator confirms them.
#1 Best Overall
SaxaVord’s public pages did not establish a confirmed launch date as of 3 October 2026. Check its news page and launch announcements as plans develop. A broad window on its own is a weak basis for a non-refundable trip.
Follow access and safety instructions
SaxaVord says strict exclusion zones and road closures will apply on launch days. Pass holders must follow the local access arrangements for reaching the viewing area. Do not approach the launch site, enter restricted land or maritime areas, or try to watch from a closed road. Follow current instructions from the operator and relevant authorities.

The Civil Aviation Authority describes SaxaVord’s range-control licence as covering safety-critical services before and during launch and as vital to public safety. That licensing information explains why controlled access matters; it is not a spectator schedule. The CAA’s range-licence announcement and its licences and registers provide regulatory context, not permission to enter a viewing area.

Choose between travelling to Unst and watching online
| Consideration | In-person viewing | Livestream |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Requires an authorised pass; places are limited and offered to Unst residents first. | SaxaVord says launches will be livestreamed; no viewing pass or trip to Unst is needed. |
| Timing | A launch window can last several weeks, and a planned launch may change. | Lets you follow an attempt without staying on Unst through a long window. |
| Travel commitment | Requires transport to Shetland and onward travel to Unst, plus accommodation and local transport. | Avoids the travel time and expense of an in-person attempt. |
SaxaVord’s chief executive, Scott Hammond, recommended that people outside Shetland consider the livestream because of the length of the test-flight window and the cost and time of travelling. In the operator’s 10 March 2026 announcement, he said: “Due to the fact that this will be a test flight and the length of the launch window, if you live outwith Shetland I would recommend that you watch it on the livestream rather than bear the cost and time involved with travelling here only to be disappointed.”
Plan travel around Unst’s constraints
SaxaVord says the usual journey involves reaching Shetland by air or sea, then taking inter-island ferries to Unst. It also notes that Unst has mainly single-track roads, limited accommodation and ferry capacity that can be at a premium. Confirm ferry places, onward transport and lodging directly for your dates before committing money. Where possible, make refundable plans and consider whether the trip still works for you if the rocket does not fly on the first advertised day.

Before you book
- Check that SaxaVord has announced viewing arrangements for the launch you hope to see.
- Confirm how to obtain a pass and whether one is available to you; do not treat the stated maximum as a guaranteed allocation.
- Check the latest launch-day and access instructions, including any road closures.
- Verify ferry, transport and accommodation availability, then review the plan if the launch timing changes.
What to bring to the viewing area
Follow SaxaVord’s instructions for the authorised area and any equipment restrictions it publishes. The operator has not specified the area’s distance, sightlines or equipment needs, so binoculars are not a stated requirement. If you already have a pass, compact binoculars may help with distant viewing, depending on the site’s sightlines.
