To check whether an update is available today, use Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates instead. These are separate checks: one shows the device’s support end date; the other checks its current software.
Check your Chromebook’s scheduled update end date
- Select the time in the bottom-right corner of the screen, then open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Select Additional details.
- Find Update schedule and read the date shown. Google describes this as when the device will receive its last automatic update. The date depends on the Chromebook model. Google’s guide to using an old Chromebook calls this the most reliable way to gauge the device’s age and remaining lifespan for official support.
If the date is in the future, the Chromebook remains within its listed automatic-update period as of the day you check. If it has passed, scheduled automatic updates have ended.

Check whether an update is available right now
- Connect the Chromebook to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > About ChromeOS.
- Select Check for updates. If the option is unavailable, Google says the device may already be up to date.
- If ChromeOS downloads an update, restart the Chromebook to finish installing it. See Google’s instructions for updating ChromeOS.
An “up to date” result only describes the installed version at that moment. It does not tell you how long the model will continue receiving updates; use Update schedule for that.

On a Chromebook managed by a school or employer, the page may say Updates are managed by your administrator instead of showing the schedule. Ask the school or employer’s administrator about the device’s update policy. Google also explains how to check a Chromebook’s update schedule.

How Google sets support dates for older Chromebooks
Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education Help policy says ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of updates, measured from the platform release date—not from when a particular person bought the Chromebook. Its Auto Update policy lists end dates by model, so check the exact model rather than estimating from its age or purchase date. A manufacturer’s end-of-sale date is not a substitute: Google says it is unrelated to update eligibility.
There is an important qualification for some pre-2021 models: an administrator must opt in to extended updates. Google marks affected models with an asterisk in the policy list. In addition, extended updates for some older models do not include Play Store or Android app support. Continued ChromeOS updates therefore do not guarantee that every app or feature will keep working the same way. See Google’s extended updates support guidance.

What a “Final software update” notice means
Google says a Final software update notification means the Chromebook will no longer receive ChromeOS or browser updates, including security updates, bug fixes and new features. Features or apps that require newer versions may stop working. If the date shown on your device has passed, or you have received this notice, you can keep using the Chromebook while understanding that it no longer receives those updates, or move to a newer Chromebook. If you need continued official ChromeOS updates, verify the exact replacement model’s date in Google’s Auto Update policy before buying.
