For weekly NFL injury, practice-participation and game-status information, use the league’s official injury report. For the game-day list of players not designated active, use NFL.com’s inactive reports page and check again close to kickoff if the game is not listed yet.
Which official NFL page should you use?
| Page | What it shows | When to check |
|---|---|---|
| NFL injury report | Weekly player injury, practice status and game-status information, organized by game and club. | During the week, as teams file their Game Status Reports. |
| NFL inactive reports | Players not designated active for a particular game. | On game day, close to kickoff. The page may not have populated yet. |
These pages are not interchangeable: the injury report is a weekly snapshot, while the inactive list is part of game-day reporting. A player’s earlier game-status designation is not the final inactive decision.

When NFL injury reports and inactive lists are filed
Weekly game-status report
For the 2026 regular season, clubs must file a weekly Game Status Report by 4 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice concludes. For Sunday games, the deadline is Friday. The filing day shifts for games played Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday, so check the NFL’s 2026-27 important-dates calendar for the game’s weekday rather than treating Friday as a universal deadline.
Game-day inactive list
NFL Football Operations says club public-relations representatives deliver the Game Day Administration Report, which includes the inactive list, at the 90-minute pre-kickoff officiating meeting. That is a procedural timing point, not a guarantee that the public inactive webpage refreshes at that exact minute; check the page close to kickoff and refresh if needed.

- Questionable: It is uncertain whether the player will play. The NFL’s policy explanation says, “Questionable means it is uncertain as to whether the player will play in the game.”
- Doubtful: The player is unlikely to participate.
- Out: The player will not play.
A player considered certain to play may no longer appear in the Game Status Report, even if listed on a practice report earlier in the week. A blank game-status field is not a separate official “active” designation. Likewise, “Out” tells you the player will not play; the game-day inactive list is still the place to check who was not designated active.
Why some rostered players are inactive
Under NFL Football Operations’ 2026 roster guidance, a team can have 48 active game-day players if it carries at least eight offensive linemen, or 47 otherwise. Practice-squad elevations can raise the active/inactive list to 54 or 55. The actual inactive list identifies who was not designated active for that game.

The NFL Competition Committee’s 2016 explanation for removing the “Probable” category said approximately 95 percent of players listed as Probable played. That is a historical figure used to explain a policy change, not a current probability for a player listed today and not a prediction for any individual game.
