To correct your phone’s clock, enable automatic date and time and automatic time-zone detection where available. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically. On Android, open the Clock app and go to More > Settings > Change date and time, then enable the automatic options your device provides.
What to know before changing the clock
Automatic date and time and automatic time zone are related, but they may be controlled separately. This is especially clear on Android, where you may see separate switches. Time-zone detection can depend on location settings, and controls differ by device, carrier, and region. If you need a fixed time zone or automatic settings are unavailable, you can select a zone manually on supported devices.

Set the time on iPhone
Use automatic date, time, and time zone
- Open Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Turn on Set Automatically. Apple says this sets the date and time based on the time zone.
- For automatic time-zone detection, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services and turn on Setting Time Zone.
Apple recommends checking that the iPhone has an internet connection and current software if automatic settings show the wrong time. If Apple reports updated time-zone information, restart the iPhone and any paired Apple Watch. See Apple Support’s time and time-zone troubleshooting instructions.
Choose a time zone or set the clock manually
- Go to Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Turn off Set Automatically.
- Tap Time Zone, search for a city, and select it. To set the date and time yourself, adjust the displayed date and time controls on this screen.
If the automatic control is dimmed or unavailable
Carrier or regional availability can affect the setting. Apple also identifies a Screen Time passcode or a corporate profile restriction as possible reasons the control cannot be changed. Check those restrictions before treating the issue as a device fault.

Set the time on Android
Turn on automatic date and time and time zone
- Open the Clock app.
- Tap More > Settings > Change date and time.
- Turn on Automatic date and time.
- If available, also turn on Automatic time zone.
Android devices may use location to detect the time zone. Some Wi-Fi-only tablets and other devices rely on location for automatic time-zone detection without showing a separate Use location setting; some devices do not offer automatic time-zone setting at all. Set an Android time zone manually
- Open Clock > More > Settings > Change date and time.
- If shown, turn off Set automatically.
- Tap Time zone and choose the zone you want.
Android menu names and available controls vary. If this path does not match your phone, search Settings for date and time or consult the device maker’s instructions.
