There is no universal compatibility answer based on “NVIDIA” or a GPU series alone. Check the exact card model and board variant against your macOS release and build, then use the compatibility guidance for your host: Apple’s list for specified Intel Mac Pro models, or the OpenCore GPU Buyers Guide for a Hackintosh. Confirm whether the setup provides only display output or also the acceleration you need before buying or changing hardware.
What you need to identify first
Compatibility is a match among the card, macOS, and the computer’s configuration. Gather these details before consulting a compatibility list:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Graphics card: Record the exact NVIDIA GPU model and, where available, the card’s vendor and board or part identity. Cards based on a similar GPU are not necessarily interchangeable.
- macOS: Write down the exact release and, when a driver listing specifies one, the macOS build number.
- Host: For an Intel Mac Pro, identify its generation or model identifier. For a Hackintosh, note the relevant hardware and configuration, including SMBIOS and whether integrated graphics are available.
- Intended result: Distinguish basic display output from graphics acceleration and any app-specific capability. Evidence that a card can boot or display an image does not, by itself, establish the other two.
Check an Intel Mac Pro against Apple’s compatibility information
Apple’s compatibility page applies to Apple-provided graphics cards and Apple upgrade kits for the Intel Mac Pro generations named there; it is not a blanket certification of every retail card using a similar GPU. Start with Apple’s Intel Mac Pro graphics-card compatibility information, then follow its operating-system-specific guidance, including the information for supported cards in macOS Mojave on Mac Pro (2010) and Mac Pro (Mid 2012).
Apple Support’s page, published November 17, 2023, cautions: “Similar cards that were not provided by Apple may have compatibility issues and you should work with the vendor of that card to confirm their compatibility.” If your card is a third-party retail variant, ask its vendor to confirm compatibility with your exact Mac Pro and macOS version rather than assuming the Apple-listed card proves it.

Check a Hackintosh against the exact GPU and macOS release
For a Hackintosh, use the OpenCore GPU Buyers Guide to check the exact GPU against the macOS version you intend to run. Then follow the matching guidance on native drivers or patches. OpenCore frames compatibility as limited by Apple support or community patches, so a statement about one NVIDIA generation or macOS release should not be extended to another without evidence.
Review OpenCore’s GPU patching guidance for its stated legacy NVIDIA scope: Tesla through Fermi. That guidance does not establish patch support for newer NVIDIA architectures.

Verify driver and build requirements
A driver’s name or the broad macOS release label may not be enough. For example, NVIDIA’s legacy Sierra driver listing for version 378.05.05.25f11 specifies macOS 10.12.6 build 16G1618 and Mac Pro 3,1, 4,1, or 5,1. Those are requirements attached to that particular historical driver release, not evidence of current or universal NVIDIA support. Check the requirements on the relevant driver listing for your exact OS build and host.

A listed GPU may still be a poor match for the way the computer routes graphics. OpenCore advises choosing an SMBIOS in light of CPU generation and tier and whether the system uses integrated or discrete graphics. Compare those assumptions with the actual hardware and configuration.

On laptops, graphics wiring can be decisive: OpenCore warns that switchable graphics or Optimus often prevents using the discrete GPU for the internal display. Check the guide’s notes for the specific laptop arrangement rather than treating desktop-card guidance as sufficient.
Use this check sequence before deciding
- Record the exact GPU model and card vendor or board variant. For a Mac Pro, also record its generation or model identifier.
- Record the precise macOS release and build, if the relevant driver or compatibility listing specifies a build.
- For an Intel Mac Pro, compare the card with Apple’s compatibility page and its OS-specific guidance. Treat the list as scoped to Apple-provided cards and upgrade kits; confirm third-party variants with their vendor.
- For a Hackintosh, check the OpenCore GPU Buyers Guide for the exact card and target macOS, then review the applicable native-driver or patch guidance.
- Check configuration dependencies, including SMBIOS graphics expectations, available integrated graphics, and any required driver or patch. For a laptop, verify graphics routing and internal-display limitations.
- Decide whether the evidence supports the result you need: display output, acceleration, or a specific application capability. Do not infer full acceleration from booting alone.
How to compare two candidate cards
Use the same criteria for each card, and do not treat a match on one criterion as proof of overall compatibility.

| Check | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Card identity | Exact GPU model and board or part variant |
| Operating system | Target macOS release and any required build number |
| Host | Intel Mac Pro generation, or Hackintosh hardware and configuration |
| Driver path | Native driver or the specific patch guidance applicable to the GPU and OS |
| Graphics setup | SMBIOS assumptions, integrated versus discrete graphics, and graphics routing |
| Proven outcome | Whether the applicable evidence establishes display output, acceleration, or both |
For a concrete compatibility check, provide the exact card and board variant, macOS release and build, and either the Mac Pro generation or the Hackintosh hardware and SMBIOS details. Without those specifics, a universal yes-or-no answer would be misleading.
