No—not as a currently supported option. Apple’s documented eGPU support for Intel Macs lists compatible AMD Radeon cards, and Apple says third-party aftermarket GPU drivers are not compatible with macOS. Older Nvidia drivers do not establish support for current Nvidia GPUs or current macOS versions.
Why an Nvidia GPU is not a supported Metal upgrade
Metal apps need a graphics device and macOS driver that support Metal. Apple’s eGPU support for Intel Macs relies on drivers integrated into macOS; Apple states that “Aftermarket GPU drivers delivered by third parties are not compatible with macOS.” Its published eGPU configurations name AMD Radeon cards, not Nvidia cards. See Apple’s eGPU support guidance and Apple’s explanation of Mac graphics drivers.

That means an Nvidia card in a Thunderbolt enclosure is not a way to add supported Metal acceleration to an Intel Mac. A compatible enclosure addresses the connection and housing, not the missing macOS driver support.

What Apple documents for Intel Mac eGPUs
Apple’s supported route has specific Mac, operating-system, graphics-card, and enclosure requirements. The exact model and macOS release matter; a card’s physical fit or connection alone does not make it compatible.

| Requirement or option | Apple’s documented detail |
|---|---|
| Mac and connection | Intel Mac with Thunderbolt 3 |
| Minimum macOS for eGPU support | macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 or later |
| Named Radeon cards | Radeon RX 6800, RX 6800 XT, and RX 6900 XT, with macOS Big Sur 11.4 or later |
| Named Thunderbolt 3 enclosures for those cards | Sonnet eGFX Breakaway Box 650W and Razer Core X |
| RX 6900 XT qualification | Apple limits support to AMD-made or AMD-sold cards with Device ID 0x73BF |
These are Apple’s documented configurations, not a guarantee that every Intel Mac, card variant, or enclosure combination will work. Check Apple’s current eGPU compatibility details before buying.
Will a supported eGPU accelerate every Metal app?
No. Apple says eGPUs can accelerate apps that benefit from Metal, OpenGL, or OpenCL, but not all apps and games support eGPU acceleration. The app must be written to use an eGPU or multiple GPUs; Metal’s ability to discover and select multiple GPUs does not make an app use them automatically. Apple’s developer guidance on finding a GPU device describes how apps can find and choose among available GPUs.

Apple identifies professional apps designed to use multiple GPUs and 3D games with an external monitor connected directly to the eGPU as cases where eGPU acceleration can be useful. Actual results depend on the app and setup; Apple’s general support information does not promise a particular speedup.
What older Nvidia Mac support does—and does not—mean
Nvidia did publish macOS graphics drivers for older systems. Its archived listing names Quadro and GeForce Driver Release 387.10.10.10.40.140 for macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. That is evidence of historical, version-specific driver availability, not support for current Nvidia cards on current macOS.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Nvidia’s CUDA Toolkit 10.2.89 release notes say: “CUDA 10.2 (Toolkit and NVIDIA driver) is the last release to support macOS for developing and running CUDA applications.” This concerns CUDA development and runtime, not Metal. CUDA support—or its historical availability—does not show that a GPU can accelerate a Metal app. See Nvidia’s archived macOS driver listing and CUDA 10.2 release notes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check these points before choosing an eGPU
- Confirm the exact Intel Mac model supports Thunderbolt 3.
- Check the installed macOS version against Apple’s requirements for the card.
- Verify the exact GPU model and, for an RX 6900 XT, the required device identity.
- Confirm the enclosure is listed for the card and provides suitable power.
- Check whether the app you want to accelerate supports eGPU use.
If the goal is Metal acceleration on macOS, choose from Apple’s compatible AMD configurations rather than buying an Nvidia eGPU on the assumption that a Thunderbolt enclosure will enable it.
