Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo keep Windows from filling your system drive with files you no longer need, turn on Storage Sense and deliberately choose what it may remove. Its defaults are cautious about Downloads and cloud files, but Recycle Bin cleanup is enabled; optional rules can delete unopened Downloads or make inactive cloud files online-only. You can find it in Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense in Windows 10 and Windows 11.
What Storage Sense cleans—and what it leaves alone
Storage Sense is a built-in Windows feature for automatically freeing space on the system drive, usually C:. With the default settings, it runs when Windows detects low disk space and removes unnecessary temporary files. It also deletes items from the Recycle Bin after a set period. It does not manage your Downloads folder or cloud files unless you enable and configure those options.

Storage Sense only manages the system drive. It also runs only when you are signed in and the device has been online for more than 10 minutes. The low-space threshold depends on drive capacity and Windows’ operating requirements, so there is no single threshold to set for every PC. See Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance for the feature’s settings and behavior.

Set Storage Sense up carefully
- Open its settings: go to Start > Settings > System > Storage, switch on Storage Sense, then open its settings. Labels and available options may differ by Windows release.
- Choose a run schedule: select how often it should run. The schedule applies while you are signed in and online; Storage Sense may also run when the system drive is low on space.
- Review temporary-file cleanup: choose whether Windows should remove temporary files. These are distinct from personal documents you are keeping in folders such as Documents or Pictures.
- Set Recycle Bin retention: choose how long deleted items remain before cleanup. If you sometimes need to restore deleted files, select a period that gives you enough time—or avoid automatic cleanup until you have reviewed your habits.
- Decide separately about Downloads: enable the rule only if you want Windows to delete files that have not been opened for the period you select. Review the folder first. Downloads can contain installers, documents, or other files you intend to keep; it is not merely a temporary cache. Leave the rule off if you use the folder for long-term storage or are unsure what is in it.
- Review cloud-file cleanup if it appears: select an inactive period that suits your use. Mark files you need offline as Always keep on this device.
Microsoft documents the available settings in its Storage Sense support page. Read each option in your own Windows version before enabling deletion rules.

What happens to OneDrive files
For eligible cloud files, Storage Sense can reclaim local disk space by making inactive files online-only. This is not the same as permanently deleting them: the files remain available in the cloud and can be downloaded again when you have an internet connection and enough local space. Files marked Always keep on this device are exempt from this cleanup.
Microsoft states that starting with Windows 11 version 22H2, the OneDrive default is to make cloud files online-only after they have not been opened for more than 30 days. That specific default should not be assumed for other cloud providers or older Windows builds. For Windows 10, Microsoft also documents the interaction with OneDrive Files On-Demand and the system-drive limitation in its Windows 10 OneDrive and Storage Sense guidance.

Run cleanup and see where the space went
You can run Storage Sense on demand from its settings. After it finishes, return to Settings > System > Storage and inspect the categories taking up space. Microsoft’s Storage settings overview explains the categories and advanced storage settings.

It can surface temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps for review. If the drive is still getting full
- Find the category using space: use the Storage breakdown in Settings to identify whether the largest use is apps, personal files, temporary files, or another category. The right fix depends on what is taking up space.
- Check which drive is full: Storage Sense handles the system drive, usually C:, not every volume in the PC. Inspect other drives through advanced storage settings rather than expecting Storage Sense to clean them.
- Move infrequently used personal files if appropriate: Microsoft suggests moving items such as photos, music, and videos to external storage. This is optional; Storage Sense does not require an external drive.
- Do not delete Windows system folders by hand: use the cleanup controls in Settings and review their candidates rather than removing files from system directories.
Storage Sense can reduce avoidable buildup, but it cannot prevent all storage growth. The amount of space it frees depends on the files on your PC and the rules you choose; Microsoft’s guidance does not promise a typical amount saved.

Storage Sense remains documented for Windows 10 as well as Windows 11, but Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The end of support does not mean the Storage Sense feature disappeared; it does mean Windows 10 no longer receives ordinary support and security updates from Microsoft.
