Check the official NFL.com injury report for the player’s team and game, then confirm against the team’s game-day inactive list near kickoff. The report’s practice participation and game-status fields are useful earlier clues; the inactive list is the clearest official confirmation of whether the player is available for that game.
Check the weekly NFL injury report first
- Open the NFL.com injury report and select the relevant season, week, and team or matchup.
- Find the player and read both the practice-participation and game-status columns. Note the report date: an earlier update may no longer reflect the player’s condition.
- For a late update, check the team’s official news or social channels as well.
The NFL’s reporting policy distinguishes the Practice Report from the Game Status Report. “Did Not Participate,” “Limited,” and “Full” describe practice participation; they are not the game-day inactive decision. The policy describes the Game Status Report as an account of anticipated availability for the next game, not a substitute for checking the final list. NFL Football Operations’ 2017 Game Status Report policy also says a player listed on the Practice Report but omitted from the Game Status Report is expected to play under that policy; if the club later deactivates him, it must provide an explanation. Because this is a 2017 policy document, use it as reporting context and verify the current game-day list.

Confirm the game-day inactive list close to kickoff
NFL Football Operations says club public-relations representatives deliver the Game Day Administration Report, which includes the club’s inactive list, to the referee at the pregame officials’ meeting 90 minutes before kickoff. See Game and stadium prep. Look for the team’s official inactive announcement around that point, especially when the player has been described as a game-time decision.
If the player is listed as inactive, that is the clearest official confirmation that he is unavailable under the regular game-day designation. If he is not listed as inactive, describe him as active or available for the game—not necessarily a starter, and not a promise that he will play a particular number of snaps.

Why the report can change during the week
The NFL’s 2026 reporting schedule sets regular-season Game Status Report deadlines at 4:00 p.m. New York time on a designated day tied to the game’s weekday; for a Sunday game, the scheduled deadline is Friday. The schedule also has game-day-specific practice-report timing, and teams must report relevant changes after the initial Game Status Report. A Friday status is therefore not necessarily the final word: recheck near the pregame inactive-list meeting.

“Active roster” can refer to a club’s 53-player Active/Inactive List, while the game-day active list is limited to 47 or 48 players, depending on the number of offensive linemen. NFL Football Operations explains the distinction in its contract language reference. Seeing that a player belongs to the roster does not establish that the club has him active for this particular game.
