When your team’s top receiver is uncertain, treat the injury tag as an availability signal—not a workload forecast. Check the latest official status, compare the receiver’s likely role with your eligible alternatives under your league’s scoring and lineup rules, and keep a viable later-kickoff replacement available when possible.
What questionable, doubtful and out mean
The NFL’s injury-report policy defines the game-status labels this way: “As amended, Questionable means it is uncertain as to whether the player will play in the game; Doubtful means it is unlikely the player will participate; and Out means the player will not play.” The NFL Competition Committee published that policy revision on NFL.com in 2016. The NFL removed the Probable category after reporting that approximately 95% of players listed as Probable in prior years played. That is a historical NFL figure from 2016; the policy article does not specify the years covered, and it is not a current estimate for players listed as Questionable.
Practice participation and game status are separate signals. A practice report may say a player did not participate, was limited, or fully participated; a game-status designation addresses expected availability. Neither an injury tag nor confirmation that a player is active guarantees a particular fantasy snap count or workload.

How to decide whether to start or sit
- Check the latest official status and kickoff time. Look for current team or NFL information, then check again near your lineup deadline. Injury information is specific to the week and matchup, and can change. The NFL’s Week 4, 2026 injury roundup illustrates how status information is tied to particular games; its player examples are not evergreen recommendations.
- Separate availability from expected role. Ask what is actually known about whether the receiver will play and what role he may have. “Questionable” does not automatically mean start or sit, and “active” does not establish that the player will have an unrestricted workload. The NFL designations describe availability, not fantasy production.
- Compare him with your best eligible replacement. Use the alternatives available in your roster slot, your league’s scoring format, and current matchup context. Yahoo’s fantasy football matchup page offers player matchup ratings and status references, but a changing matchup rating is context—not a guarantee of future performance.
- Account for late news and substitution rules. If the receiver’s game starts later, consider keeping an eligible replacement who has not already played. That can preserve a swap option if more information arrives. Check your platform and league rules: player eligibility, lineup locks, and whether a later substitution is possible vary.
- Choose based on the remaining uncertainty. If official information is still ambiguous at lineup lock, weigh the risk against your roster context and replacement options. Do not invent a probability or assume you know the receiver’s workload.
Compare the actual choices, not just the injury tags

There is no universal start-or-sit answer without the league settings, alternatives, and current player information. For one example of the practical roster question, a public fantasy-football discussion asks how to project “who’s gonna play good or bad?” Read the discussion; it is an example, not a measured survey of fantasy managers.
