A goalie’s past starts or season workload share can help estimate opportunity, but neither confirms tonight’s start nor guarantees a good result.
1. Confirm that he is starting
Do not treat a season starter label, a high share of team starts, or a projection as confirmation. Check an up-to-date lineup source and, close to puck drop, current game-day reporting. NHL.com’s fantasy portal provides projected lineups and starting-goalie coverage. An independent goalie board also distinguishes workload records from confirmation of the next start.

Read status language literally: a confirmed start is stronger evidence than a reported or probable start, and a projection is not a guarantee. If no reliable current report confirms the goalie, treat the start as uncertain and compare the alternatives accordingly.
2. Assess his role and likely workload
Season usage is a useful baseline for how often a goalie has played, not a promise about how often he will play next. A coach may change the rotation after an injury, a run of games, or a shift between a clear starter and a 1A/1B tandem. Check season start share alongside recent starts, injury news, and the team’s upcoming schedule.

Account for back-to-backs without assuming a split
Teams often divide starts on consecutive days, but coach choices vary and can depend on the opponent, rest, and the goalies available. In a January 2022 Seattle Kraken article, head coach Dave Hakstol said, “Typically you’re going to have a split on the back-to-backs.” Treat that as a common pattern, not a rule for every team or a forecast for a particular goalie. 3. Judge the matchup and schedule as inputs, not a formula
Once the start and role are reasonably clear, consider the opponent’s likely scoring and shot pressure, the goalie’s team situation and projected goal support, and any rest or schedule disadvantage. NHL Fantasy Staff includes team goalie situation, expected start volume, and projected goal support among its valuation considerations in its October 1, 2026 goalie rankings.

- Opponent pressure: A team that generates more shots may create save opportunities, but also more chances to concede goals.
- Team support: A goalie’s chance of earning a win depends partly on whether his team can score and protect a lead; that is not a goalie-only matchup factor.
- Rest and schedule: Consider consecutive-day games and other schedule context, but do not apply an automatic fatigue penalty without evidence specific to the situation.
These factors do not produce a dependable universal matchup score. There is no established threshold in the cited material that turns an opponent’s shot or scoring rate into a reliable start/sit rule. Use current opponent figures only when they are available for the relevant season, and treat them as context rather than certainty.

The same goalie can be attractive in one format and risky in another. NHL.com lists wins, goals-against average, save percentage, and shutouts as standard goalie categories; its separate NHL Fantasy Stars game awards points for wins, saves, and other events. Check your league’s actual settings rather than assuming those formats are interchangeable.

5. Treat workload and fatigue claims cautiously
A retrospective study in the January–February 2025 issue of Sports Health analyzed 51 goalies and 111 goalie-seasons across six full seasons. Regular-season workload explained 6.8% of the variance in the study’s primary postseason performance model, and the relationship was not statistically significant (R² = 0.068; p = 0.26). The authors concluded, “Based on data from 6 full seasons, there is no evidence to support a specific regular season game limit among NHL goalies with the aim of improved performance.” Ekhtiari et al., “Load Management Among Professional Hockey Goalies: A Retrospective Cohort Study”.
That finding concerns regular-season workload and postseason performance. It does not determine whether a particular goalie is tired tonight, show that workload never matters, or provide a nightly fantasy projection. Likewise, the Kraken’s 2022 article recounts an older 2013 analysis by Eric Tulsky that found an 11% decrease in save percentage on consecutive-day starts, but notes later analyses found the effect may be less pronounced. Do not treat that older figure as a settled current fatigue estimate.

6. Compare two goalies with the same checklist
When choosing between options, prioritize current evidence over a short hot streak. A practical comparison should cover:

- Start certainty: Is the start confirmed, reported, projected, or inferred from past usage?
- Role and workload: What are the season share and recent trend, and is the goalie in a tandem or returning from an injury?
- Opportunity and support: How much volume might the start offer, and does the team have a reasonable chance to score enough to support a win?
- Opponent and schedule: What are the opponent’s likely pressure and the relevant rest or back-to-back conditions?
- Scoring fit: Does your format reward counting stats and points, or expose you to ratio damage? Are minimum starts relevant?
- Evidence quality: Is the information current and tied to the goalie’s present role, or based on a small run of recent save percentage?
The NHL.com goalie board cautions that short-term save-percentage runs can be noisy and that workload records can lag a role change. Treat those as reasons to weigh current start reporting and role context carefully—not as proof that any one statistic predicts the next game.
