To find out whether you can use ChatGPT or another AI tool for coursework, check both your current course syllabus and the instructions for the specific assignment. If they do not clearly permit the exact tool and task you have in mind, ask your instructor before using it. Permission for one kind of help—such as brainstorming—does not automatically cover rewriting or generating answers.
Check the course policy and the assignment instructions
Start with the current syllabus or course outline. Look for sections on generative AI, artificial intelligence, academic integrity, plagiarism, unauthorized assistance, technology, or assessment rules. Then read the directions for the particular assignment, exam, lab, or discussion post. A course may allow some AI uses generally while setting a narrower rule for one assessment.

Policies vary across courses and assignments; there is no single rule that makes AI use automatically permitted or prohibited at every college. The University of Minnesota AI Hub puts the priority plainly: “Your instructor’s policy comes first.” That is university guidance, not a universal legal rule; also follow any applicable institutional requirements. Ask about the exact tool, task, and stage
If the policy is silent or unclear, pause and ask the instructor before using AI. Be specific: name the tool or feature, what you want it to do, and when you would use it. For example: “May I use ChatGPT to brainstorm possible topics, then write the argument and prose myself?” This makes it easier to distinguish a permitted use from a restricted one.
Columbia Business School instructs students to clarify with their professor before using generative AI when the course policy is not clearly stated in the syllabus or assignment directions. UBC and other institutions also direct students to seek clarification when unsure. These are institution-specific policies and guidance; follow the process your own course or institution specifies. When practical, keep a copy of the instructor’s response. Columbia recommends written clarification, such as by email, but a particular channel is not required everywhere.

A policy may distinguish among tasks, stages of work, and tools. Permission to brainstorm does not necessarily allow AI to draft paragraphs; permission to check grammar does not necessarily allow substantial rewriting. Before proceeding, establish whether the specific use is allowed, including whether you may copy or adapt output.

UVic distinguishes basic spelling and grammar aids from tools that generate or substantially revise content, which must follow course-specific rules. UBC also cautions that AI features can appear inside other software. If you cannot tell what a feature does or whether it counts under your course policy, ask. Check disclosure and citation requirements separately
Permission and documentation are two different questions. First confirm that the use is allowed; disclosure does not make a prohibited use acceptable. If it is allowed, check whether you must identify the tool, describe how you used it, cite generated material, or mark text that came from AI. Follow the instructor’s specified format rather than assuming one citation method applies to every course.
Ask whether disclosure is required for all permitted uses or only when generated content is incorporated into the submission. Keep a record of the tool and use if your instructor requires one. If no documentation rules are given, ask before submitting work that involved AI.
Protect your information and verify AI output
Before pasting course materials or your own work into an AI service, check relevant privacy and copyright rules. University of Washington teaching guidance advises caution about uploading copyrighted materials, original work, or personal information. The University of Minnesota says not to upload copyrighted course readings without permission or a known exemption. University of Washington Teaching@UW: Developing AI-related course policies · University of Minnesota AI Hub: Policies & Guidance
You remain responsible for the accuracy of claims and sources in your work. Verify factual statements and references generated by an AI tool rather than assuming they are correct.
What to do when policies conflict or you need an accommodation
If the syllabus and assignment instructions seem inconsistent, ask the instructor which rule applies before using AI. For questions about the institution’s academic-integrity process, consult the appropriate academic-integrity or student-support office.
Accessibility tools can have separate arrangements. UVic, for example, recognizes approved tools required for registered disability accommodations and advises students to notify instructors ahead of time if a needed software tool is not already listed or included in the accommodation letter. Check your institution’s own accommodation process; this example is specific to UVic. University of Victoria: Policy on Academic Integrity – Student FAQs
