Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a Yahoo Mail message pressures you to sign in, share payment details, claim a surprise reward, download a file, or act urgently, do not reply, click, or open an attachment. Check the message for warning signs, verify its claim through a separate trusted route, and report suspicious mail as Spam. Yahoo’s alerts can help, but no alert does not prove that a message is safe.
What makes a Yahoo email look like phishing?
Phishing is an attempt to get information you would not normally give out, such as a password, payment details, or identity information. Yahoo describes fake account warnings, implausible offers, unexpected download requests, and urgent favors as common warning signs. These clues warrant caution; none alone proves that a message is fraudulent or genuine.

- A threat that your account will be closed or suspended unless you act immediately.
- A request to sign in, disclose a password, or provide payment information.
- An unexpected prize, refund, or other offer that asks you to click or provide details.
- An unsolicited attachment or download, or an urgent request for help.
A familiar company name, logo, or sender display name is not enough to establish that the email is genuine.
How to check the message without putting your account at risk
1. Pause instead of interacting
Do not reply, follow links, or open unexpected attachments. Urgency and threats are often used to short-circuit careful checking. If the message asks you to do something consequential, verify the request before taking action.

2. Inspect what the sender wants
Look at the requested action, not just the story around it. A demand for credentials or payment, a surprise reward, a download, or an urgent favor deserves independent verification. Treat these as warning signs rather than a definitive test.
3. Treat the sender address and links as clues, not proof
Yahoo warns about misspelled or lookalike addresses and spoofing, which can make a message appear to come from someone trusted. The visible From address may therefore be misleading. Link text can also look like a familiar or Yahoo address while leading somewhere malicious. On desktop, hovering may show a destination, but do not click a suspicious link just to inspect it.

For a message claiming to be from Yahoo, Yahoo says legitimate Yahoo websites use a yahoo.com domain and that Yahoo does not request passwords or credit-card information by email. Do not use a link in the message to test that claim.
4. Read Yahoo’s indicators cautiously
A Yahoo warning pop-up or red exclamation mark means the service has detected suspicious signals and recommends caution. But Yahoo notes that attackers can evade filters, so the absence of an alert is not a clean bill of health.

A purple checkmark indicates that Yahoo Mail has verified the sender as the brand that owns the displayed logo. Yahoo describes this as a brand-related indicator, not a universal guarantee that every message from every sender is authentic or safe.
5. Verify the claim through a separate route
If the email claims to be from a bank, retailer, government service, Yahoo, or someone you know, do not use its links, phone numbers, or reply address to confirm. Instead, use a website or contact method you already trust, or find the organization’s official site independently. For a person you know, use contact details you had before receiving the message.

How to report a suspicious email in Yahoo Mail
- Select the suspicious email in Yahoo Mail.
- Choose Spam. Yahoo says this moves the message out of the Inbox and helps improve its filters.
- If Yahoo shows a suspicious-message alert, you can also use its Report or Remove sender controls.
Yahoo provides a Report Abuse route for suspected phishing sent from a Yahoo or AOL account. You do not need to investigate a message’s technical details before reporting an obvious suspicious email.
When to inspect the raw message headers
Header inspection may help if the displayed sender appears forged, suspicious messages continue after blocking, or an administrator needs to investigate. In New Yahoo Mail on desktop, Yahoo’s indexed instructions say to open the email, choose More options, then View Raw Message. Interface labels can differ by mail version or region.
For this investigation, Yahoo points to the Received or Mailfrom fields to compare the displayed sender with the sending address; its guidance identifies the top-most Received or Mailfrom field as the relevant real sending address. Header details can be confusing, and an ordinary recipient does not need to interpret them before reporting a suspicious message. Yahoo also describes a specialized ISP-tracing procedure for messages that appear to come from a closed Yahoo account; it is not a routine check for deciding whether to report an email.
What to do if you already clicked, opened a file, or shared information
- If you entered your Yahoo password: change it through Yahoo’s official account route and review or update your account information.
- If you shared financial information: contact the relevant financial institution promptly.
- If you clicked a link or opened a file: Yahoo suggests using antivirus protection to scan the device. A scan or password change alone is not established as a complete response to every kind of device compromise.
For account changes, navigate to Yahoo independently rather than using a link in the suspicious message.
