It may help on buses and trains too, but Google does not publish separate evidence that it works equally well in those settings. Results vary, and the feature can worsen symptoms for some people.
What Motion assist does
Motion assist displays small bubbles near the edges of the screen. They move in real time using the phone’s motion sensors, providing visual cues intended to track vehicle turns, acceleration, and braking. Google’s explanation is that these cues may help the brain align what the eyes see with what the body feels; it is the feature’s intended mechanism, not a clinical effectiveness result. Google’s Android Help page describes the bubbles, while Google’s September 1, 2026 Android Drop announcement presents Motion assist as an overlay for passengers who want to read, browse, or watch during a car ride.

Does it work in cars, buses, and trains?

Google also warns that the phone may not always detect when it is in a moving vehicle. It does not provide detection reliability figures for cars, buses, or trains individually. Google’s setup instructions recommend adding a manual Quick Settings tile as a fallback.
How to turn on Motion assist on a Pixel
Google lists Android 17 or higher and updated Google Play Services as requirements. Android Help gives this Settings route:

- Open Settings and tap your profile.
- Choose All services, then Personal & device safety, and tap Motion assist. You can also search Settings for “Motion assist.”
- Turn on Start in a moving vehicle if you want it to activate automatically when motion is detected.
- Add the Motion assist tile to Quick Settings, either from the Motion assist settings page or through Quick Settings’ edit menu. Tap the tile to start it manually if automatic detection misses the ride.
When automatic activation starts, a silent notification appears. Tapping that notification turns Motion assist off for that session. Google’s instructions recommend using the automatic setting and tile together.
Adjusting the bubbles
Motion assist lets you change bubble opacity, color theme, and shape; a randomization option periodically changes their color and shape. Google presents these as customization controls and does not say that one setting is more effective than another. Android Help lists the available appearance options.

What to expect—and when to stop
Treat Motion assist as an aid to try, not a cure or guaranteed prevention. Google says results vary, it may not work for everyone, and a small percentage of users may experience worsened symptoms. That is a qualitative warning, not a published numerical rate; Google’s official materials do not provide an effectiveness percentage, clinical-trial result, or comparison by vehicle type. Google’s Android feature page says to stop use if you feel discomfort.
