Yes—an old phone can work well as a dedicated music player if it still boots, charges, has usable storage and can play through headphones or a speaker. You do not need to factory-reset it: check the hardware first, copy music to it, set up a compatible player and test playback and battery life on the actual device.
Check the phone before setting it up
Start with the phone as it is. Confirm it boots, accepts a charge and has enough free space for the music you want to keep on it. Try audio through its 3.5 mm headphone jack, Bluetooth or a compatible adapter, depending on what the model supports.

Age alone does not tell you how long its battery will last during playback. Test the phone with a representative playlist and screen off; use the result from that device rather than assuming a general runtime. Storage expansion, adapter support and available software also depend on the model and operating system.

Decide whether to reset it
A factory reset is optional. If the phone is already clean and works, you can leave it alone. A reset erases user data and apps, so back up anything you need and make sure you know the associated Google Account credentials before proceeding. Google recommends charging the device to at least 70%; signing in after the reset may require a network connection. If the phone contains another person’s data, resolve ownership and backup needs before changing or erasing it. Do not reset first and assume the files can be recovered afterward.
Copy music onto the phone
Android: transfer files from a computer
- Unlock the phone and connect it to the computer with a USB cable that supports data transfer.
- On the phone, open the USB notification and select “File Transfer.”
- Open the phone’s storage in the computer’s file-transfer window and drag the music files into a folder you can find later, such as Music.
- Safely disconnect the phone, then check that the files appear in your player app.
Google’s instructions note that some USB cables cannot transfer files; if the phone does not appear on the computer, try a known data-capable cable. Some of its guidance applies specifically to Android 14 and later, so labels and behavior may differ on an older phone: Google’s Android file-transfer instructions.

iPhone: distinguish Files storage from a music library
iPhone can access supported external USB drives and SD cards through the Files app and compatible apps, using a compatible connector or adapter. Apple documents supported file-system formats and external-storage access here: Use external storage devices with iPhone. This does not mean every iPhone has an internal card slot, or that placing audio files in Files automatically adds them to a music library. The method for music-library playback depends on the iPhone model, iOS version and where the music comes from; there is no single universal import procedure established here.
Choose storage and headphone connections
Use the phone’s built-in storage first if it is sufficient. Whether you can add a microSD card or use external storage is model-specific; check the phone’s specifications and supported apps before buying anything.

Make it behave like a music player
Install or use a music-player app that supports the phone’s operating system and the formats of your audio files. On an older device, app availability and compatibility may be limited, so verify that the app installs and plays your files before relying on it. Make the player easy to launch, then disable notifications and connectivity you do not need. Keeping Wi-Fi or cellular service off can reduce interruptions, but you may still need connectivity for setup, account access or other functions.

- Play a representative playlist and confirm the tracks appear in the expected order.
- Test wired or Bluetooth audio, including reconnecting Bluetooth after a pause or restart.
- Turn the screen off and confirm playback continues.
- Check the controls you expect to use, such as pause, skip and volume.
- Charge the phone and observe real playback time on its battery; repeat the check if the result seems inconsistent.
If it fails one of these checks, troubleshoot the specific weak point: try another cable or compatible audio output, free storage, or use a supported player app. If the phone cannot hold enough charge for your intended listening, its age does not make it a dependable dedicated player without a device-specific battery solution.
