You can reduce the risk by using a trusted source, checking the game’s rules and compatibility, questioning suspicious requests, and backing up your saves before installation. If anything does not add up, do not run it.
Before downloading: check the source and creator
Start with the game’s official mod manager, if it has one, or the verified page of a recognized creator or project. Valve advises: “Use caution when installing any game modifications like scripts or custom skins, and only download custom content from trusted sources.” Steam’s VAC guidance is platform-specific, but the general caution is useful for any game.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre’s advice is: “Only use games, applications and mods that you know are legitimate.” Its online gaming security tips also recommend checking legitimacy before downloading. Look for a consistent creator identity, a clear project page, and a description that matches the files offered. Be especially wary of unsolicited messages, unfamiliar shortened links, re-uploads with no clear attribution, or download pages that disguise unrelated software as a required component.
Check compatibility and the rules for your game
Confirm the supported game version
Read the mod’s description for the game version it supports and compare that with the version you have installed. Compatibility is game-specific, and an old or mismatched mod may fail, corrupt data, or behave unpredictably. KRAFTON’s PUBG Mods Policy, effective August 12, 2026, requires mods to identify the game version at the time of creation. That is a PUBG policy, not a universal requirement for all mods.

Check whether the mod is allowed where you plan to use it
Read the current rules for the game and online service before enabling a mod, especially for multiplayer. Steam warns that third-party modifications designed to give an advantage on VAC-secured servers can trigger a VAC ban. Other games set their own rules, so a mod being available from a well-known page does not mean it is permitted online. If the rules are unclear, consult the game’s official support guidance and keep the mod out of online play until you know.
Watch for suspicious requests and permissions
A mod should not need you to weaken your device’s basic security just to install it. The Australian Cyber Security Centre advises avoiding software that recommends turning off antivirus or asks for excessive or suspicious permissions. Stop if the installer asks you to:
Rank #2
- Disable antivirus or ignore a security warning.
- Install unrelated programs, browser extensions, or “download managers.”
- Grant access that does not fit the mod’s purpose, such as broad access to files or accounts without a clear reason.
Do not treat these requests as routine troubleshooting. A creator’s explanation does not make an unreasonable request safe; if you cannot verify why a permission is needed, do not proceed.
If the mod contains scripts, inspect what they can do
Some mods and user-created assets include scripts rather than only textures, models, or other passive files. If the platform lets you inspect scripts, check them or ask someone knowledgeable to review them before enabling the asset. Unusually obfuscated or needlessly complex code deserves extra scrutiny, but a novice review cannot certify that code is safe.

Roblox warns that third-party Creator Store assets can conceal malicious backdoor scripts. Its Creator Hub guidance recommends sandboxing assets and granting only the capabilities they need. Those controls and warnings apply to Roblox creator assets; other games may not offer equivalent sandbox or permission settings. Popularity, ratings, and downloads can help you assess a listing, but they do not prove its scripts are harmless.
Scan the files, but do not treat a clean result as proof
Keep security software enabled and scan downloaded files with up-to-date protection before installing. A clean scan only means the tool did not detect a threat at that time; it is not a guarantee that the mod is safe. Steam Support notes that false positives can occur, but that does not mean you should dismiss an alert. If a detection appears, do not run the file while you are uncertain. Check the security provider’s guidance or contact its support rather than assuming the warning is harmless.
Back up saves before changing game files
Copy your game saves somewhere separate before installing a mod, particularly if it replaces files or changes a game in a way that could affect progress. The Australian Cyber Security Centre names a USB stick, memory card, external hard drive, or cloud storage as backup options. A backup helps you recover from lost or damaged saves; it does not detect malware or make an unsafe mod safe.

Use this final decision checklist
- Source: Is the download from the game’s official manager or a creator/project page you can verify?
- Compatibility: Does the listing identify a game version that matches yours?
- Rules: Do the game and online service permit this mod for the way you intend to use it?
- Requests: Does it avoid asking you to disable protection, install unrelated software, or grant excessive access?
- Scripts: If it contains code, can you inspect it or use the platform’s available sandbox and capability controls?
- Protection and recovery: Have you scanned the download with current security software and backed up your saves?
A trusted platform, plausible creator, compatible version, limited permissions, and clean scan can all reduce uncertainty; none certifies a mod as safe. Steam recommends trusted sources, while KRAFTON’s PUBG policy says of unofficial third-party tools used to create mods: “The Company makes no guarantees regarding their security, functionality, or compatibility.” If you still have doubts, do not install it; ask the author through the official project page or consult the game’s support guidance.
