In draw.io (also called diagrams.net), open File > Export As and choose PDF, SVG, PNG, JPEG, or another available image format. Save the editable .drawio file first; then set export options for the recipient and check the result in the app where it will be used.

Save the editable diagram before exporting

Exported files are delivery copies, and not every format keeps the complete editable diagram. Save the original as a .drawio file or XML before creating PDFs or images. draw.io also supports embedding diagram data in some exports, but keeping the native file is the safest way to preserve the complete source. See draw.io’s supported export formats.

Export a diagram from draw.io

  1. Open the diagram and save the source file.
  2. Choose File > Export As. The wording or menu presentation can vary with the editor theme.
  3. Select PDF, SVG, or the image format you need.
  4. Review the format-specific options, export the file, and open it in the intended destination to check its appearance.

The official export guide lists PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG, and PDF, as well as animated GIF among image formats. Available choices may depend on the editor.

Export to PDF for documents or printing

  1. Choose File > Export As > PDF.
  2. Choose whether to export all pages, the current page, or a selection.
  3. Choose whether to crop to the diagram or fit the content to sheets; adjust border width and zoom to suit the intended page layout.
  4. Export the PDF and check that the diagram fits the pages as expected.

PDF export can include diagram data, allowing the file to be reopened in draw.io. If PDF export produces an error, draw.io’s documented fallback is File > Print, followed by the device’s “Print to PDF” or “Save as PDF” option. Option names vary by operating system and printer setup. More details are in the PDF export guide.

Export to SVG when resizing matters

  1. Choose File > Export As > SVG.
  2. Review the SVG export options and export the file.
  3. Open the SVG in the recipient application and check text, layout, and any links.

SVG is vector output, so it can be resized without the pixelation associated with raster images. However, support for some SVG features varies across destination applications. The draw.io SVG guide warns that foreign objects may not work everywhere; for destinations with limited support, it recommends disabling text formatting and word wrap on text elements. The guide states that the editor exports SVG 1.1 by default.

Choose PNG, JPEG, or another image format

Use a raster image when the recipient needs a conventional image for a document, slide, or other image-based workflow. Choose the format based on transparency and whether the editable diagram data matters:

  • PNG: Suitable for general image use. It can preserve transparency and may include editable diagram data.
  • JPEG: A flattened image; draw.io’s instructions state that JPEG does not contain the diagram data.
  • WebP or animated GIF: These are also listed among supported image formats in draw.io’s export documentation. Check that the recipient’s application accepts the chosen format.

For any image format, inspect the exported result at the size and background where it will appear. The format guide describes the export options and diagram-data support.

Pick a format that fits the handoff

Format Best fit Important consideration
PDF Document or print handoff Set the page range and choose crop-to-content or fit-to-sheets behavior.
SVG Graphics that need to stay crisp when resized Check feature and text compatibility in the destination application.
PNG General image use, including cases that need transparency May retain editable diagram data; verify the recipient’s workflow.
JPEG Flattened raster image use Does not carry draw.io diagram data.
HTML or published/embedded view Interactive access, hyperlinks, or richer navigation HTML requires JavaScript; SVG and images do not. Confirm the recipient can use the interactive view.

For more on the distinctions between export, embedding, publishing, and printing, see draw.io’s export overview.
