Check the device’s charging specification, the charger’s supported output, and the cable’s rated power. All three need to support a compatible USB Power Delivery (USB PD) level for the setup to reach that level. A USB-C connector’s shape, a “fast charging” label, or a high data-speed rating does not tell you the cable’s charging capacity.
1. Find the power your device and charger support
Use the device maker’s specifications to find its required input or maximum charging power, expressed in watts (W). Then check the charger’s output profiles: the power it can supply depends on which voltage and current levels it supports.

USB PD lets compatible devices and chargers negotiate power. As USB-IF explains, the standard’s maximum is not automatically the power a particular phone or laptop will draw. A device’s actual draw can change with battery charge, temperature, and its own charging behavior.
USB PD 3.1 supports up to 240W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector. USB-IF lists fixed-voltage power levels of 140W at 28V, 180W at 36V, and 240W at 48V. Earlier USB PD versions had a 100W limit using 20V and USB Type-C cables rated at 5A. These are standard-level capabilities, not a promise that your equipment supports or uses them. See USB-IF’s USB Charger (USB Power Delivery) explainer.

2. Check the cable’s power rating
Identify the exact cable model and its connector arrangement. For a USB-C-to-USB-C cable, look for the stated wattage on the packaging, product listing, or manufacturer’s specification. If the cable is presented as USB-IF certified, check for the applicable USB-IF power logo: the compliance program’s USB-C-to-USB-C cable categories use 60W and 240W markings. USB-IF’s USB Type-C Cable Power Rating Logo Usage Guide shows the marks.
Do not estimate power capability from cable thickness, connector appearance, or a generic “fast charging” claim. A USB-IF mark or model-specific specification is more useful than a data-rate label: USB-IF treats power and data performance as separate cable attributes.

3. Compare the cable with the complete setup
Match the cable’s stated power capacity against the compatible power level required by the device and supported by the charger. A cable rated below the level you need can limit the setup. A cable rated for more power cannot make a lower-rated charger or device deliver more; compatible power negotiation among the device, charger, and cable determines the result.

| Device charging specification | The input or maximum charging power the device supports; actual draw can vary. |
| Charger output profiles | The power levels the charger can offer for compatible negotiation. |
| Cable power rating | The cable’s stated power capacity; it must be sufficient for the level you are trying to reach. |
| Cable data-rate mark | Data performance, not charging capacity by itself. |
4. Verify certification by exact model
If USB-IF certification matters to you, search for the exact product or model in USB-IF’s Product Search. The database covers products certified to bear USB-IF’s logo, including cable listings. Its contents are maintained by members and the search defaults to products certified within the last two years, so a missing result does not by itself prove that a cable is unsafe or noncompliant. USB-IF advises contacting the manufacturer about an unlisted product.

This means: (1) Stable power delivery even at 240W (no energy loss or heat buildup). (2) Longer lifespan (resists corrosion and wear, unlike cheaper alloys). (3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference
5. Keep data speed separate from charging power
A cable can have a high data-rate capability without a correspondingly high charging rating. USB-IF requires data-rate marks on most USB-C-to-USB-C cable categories in addition to the power mark. For example, its guidance describes a USB 20Gbps cable supporting 20V at 3A with a combined 20Gbps/60W logo. If you also need to transfer files or connect a display, check the data specification separately from the power rating. See USB-IF’s Cables and Connectors guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Use a meter only to troubleshoot a specific setup
An optional USB-C PD power meter can show power observed between a particular charger, cable, and device. Treat that reading as diagnostic evidence for that combination, not proof of USB-IF certification or a universal specification for the cable. A meter reading also does not establish how the cable will perform with different equipment. USB-IF’s USB Type-C and USB Power Delivery Testing Index covers official compliance documents and test equipment.
