Install Vimium, press ? on a regular webpage to view its keyboard shortcuts, and use the Options page to change them. Vimium’s defaults cover scrolling, jumping to page edges, and opening links without a mouse; custom mappings can also conflict with a website or a browser shortcut.
Install Vimium and open its settings
- Install Vimium from the extension store for your browser. The project lists Chrome, Edge, and Firefox; check the live store listing for compatibility with your specific browser version.
- Open an ordinary webpage and press
?to display the help dialog and available key bindings. - Choose the help dialog’s Options link, or open your browser’s extensions page and select Vimium’s options.
Vimium describes itself as “a browser extension which provides keyboard shortcuts for navigation and control in the spirit of the Vim editor.” Its controls are inspired by Vim, but you do not need to use Vim to configure them.

Use ? on the page where you are browsing to see the available bindings in the help dialog. The Vimium project documentation and its Firefox listing document these shortcuts.
Customize or remove a key mapping
In Vimium’s options, find Custom key mappings. Enter one mapping statement per line. The project documents these forms:

map key commandassigns a command to a key.unmap keyremoves a Vimium binding, restoring browser behavior where available.unmapAllclears all default Vimium bindings.
For example, the README shows that mapping Ctrl+D to a Vimium page-scrolling command can suppress Chrome’s usual bookmark-dialog behavior for that shortcut. That illustrates an important trade-off: a custom mapping may take precedence over a browser or website action.
Modifier notation includes <c-x> for Ctrl, <m-x> for Meta, and <a-x> for Alt combinations. Consult the README for command names and mapping syntax before assigning a shortcut. After editing, test the mapping on a regular webpage and revisit the options if it intercepts a key you still need.

When Vimium does not work
First test on an ordinary webpage. Some pages are controlled by the browser rather than by a webpage, and extensions may not be allowed to run there. Chrome specifically blocks Vimium on the Chrome Web Store and Chrome’s New Tab page by design.

- Chrome New Tab page: Vimium cannot run there by default. The project documents the companion Vimium New Tab Page extension for using Vimium on newly opened browser New Tab pages; check compatibility with your browser version.
- A particular website: Return to a normal page and press
?. If the help dialog appears there but not on the target page, the limitation may be the page or browser permissions rather than your mapping.

Should you use Vimium C instead?
Vimium C is an alternative project that lists Chrome, Edge, and Firefox support and describes additional features, including contextual mappings. Choose based on the browser and version you use, the specific mapping features you need, how much configuration you are comfortable with, and whether extensions can run on the pages you want to control. The available project information establishes a feature distinction, not a universal best choice.
