How to Check Whether a Steam Game Works on Linux Before You Buy It

Open the game’s Steam Store page and read System Requirements before buying. A listed SteamOS + Linux requirement means the publisher supplies a native Linux build. A Windows-only listing may still work through Valve’s Steam Play compatibility layer, Proton, but that is something you must verify for your hardware, distribution, drivers, launcher, and multiplayer services.

Start with the Steam Store page

On the game’s Steam Store page, scroll to System Requirements. Steam Support directs buyers to this section for both operating-system compatibility and hardware requirements. Record every detail shown there before you make a decision:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Supported operating systems
  • Minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, memory, and storage
  • Display or graphics requirements
  • Required launcher, account, or third-party software
  • Any notes about online services or other dependencies

Do not treat the Windows, macOS, and Linux icons as a performance rating. They identify the platforms for which the store lists requirements. You still need to compare those requirements with your own computer and then check how the game behaves through Proton if no Linux build is listed.

Native Linux or Windows through Proton?

What a SteamOS + Linux listing means

If SteamOS + Linux appears under System Requirements, the publisher provides a Linux build through Steam. That is the clearest store-page indication of native Linux support. The game still has to meet your CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, driver, and display capabilities; a native build does not guarantee a particular frame rate or that every Linux distribution behaves identically.

  • 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32

SteamOS + Linux is also different from a Steam Deck badge. A native Linux listing describes the platform build supplied by the publisher. A Deck badge describes Valve’s review of the game on a specific handheld environment and its controls, display, launch flow, Proton or native support, and middleware.

What a Windows-only listing means

If the store lists only Windows, Steam does not promise a native Linux executable. The game may nevertheless run on Linux through Steam Play, Valve’s compatibility system built around Proton. Proton translates or supplies Windows-facing components so Steam can launch many Windows games on Linux.

“May run” is important. A Windows-only game can fail because of a launcher, digital-rights-management component, graphics feature, kernel-level software, anti-cheat service, or an update that changes compatibility. Treat Proton as a compatibility path to investigate, not as an automatic guarantee.

A pre-purchase Linux compatibility workflow

1. Capture the store requirements

Write down the operating system, minimum and recommended hardware, storage, and any launcher or account requirement. If the page gives separate minimum and recommended specifications, compare your machine with both. Meeting the minimum may indicate that the game can start, while the recommended specification is a more useful target for consistent performance, but neither label replaces testing on your configuration.

2. Look specifically for SteamOS + Linux

Do not infer Linux support from a game running on Steam Deck or from a community report. The official SteamOS + Linux category is the strongest evidence on the store page that the publisher offers a native Linux build. If that category is absent, continue with the Proton checks below.

3. Search ProtonDB for current reports

For a Windows-only title, consult ProtonDB, a crowdsourced database of Linux and Steam Deck experiences. Read several recent reports rather than relying on a single score. A useful report normally identifies:

  • The Proton version used
  • The Linux distribution and its release or desktop context
  • The GPU and driver in use
  • Launch options or other settings
  • Launcher, video, or controller problems
  • Whether multiplayer worked

A ProtonDB rating is evidence from other people’s systems, not a certification for yours. Give more weight to reports that resemble your distribution, GPU vendor, driver generation, display resolution, and intended game mode. A report that says a title works after a particular launch option is more actionable than a bare thumbs-up, while an old report may no longer describe the current game or Proton release.

4. Check Proton and all middleware

Valve describes Proton as the compatibility layer used by Steam Play. Check whether reports mention the game’s launcher, DRM, anti-cheat, overlay, or other middleware separately from the game itself. A title can render correctly in a menu but fail when its launcher signs in, when an anti-cheat service starts, or when an online session begins.

This ensures stable online play and rapid updates, making it the most reliable wireless gaming handheld for modern high-speed home networks.
  • 【Responsive Touch & Enhanced Connectivity】 Enjoy a vastly improved touchscreen with higher fidelity and faster haptics. We’ve added a dedicated Bluetooth antenna to improve connections for multiple controllers. Whether using the built-in trackpads or the included external controller, this allows for precision play in everything from FPS to complex strategy games.

Valve’s Deck criteria require the game and all its middleware to be supported by Proton, including anti-cheat support. That makes middleware a purchase decision, not a minor technical footnote.

5. Compare your hardware and drivers

Match your CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, graphics driver, and display against the store requirements. Also consider headroom: Proton adds a compatibility layer, and community reports may use a faster GPU, more memory, or a newer driver than your system. A compatibility report can tell you that a game launches; it cannot establish that your machine will maintain an acceptable frame rate or load it without stutter.

Use the driver actually installed on your system when comparing reports. “Linux” covers many distributions and driver stacks. Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, and other distributions can ship different kernel, Mesa, proprietary-driver, Vulkan, and desktop versions. A report from one distribution is useful context, not a universal result.

6. If you are buying for Steam Deck, inspect the badge details

Valve assigns four Deck compatibility states:

Badge What Valve’s label means What you should expect
Verified Works great out of the box under Valve’s Deck criteria. Normal play should not require manual fixes, although game updates can change behavior.
Playable Works, but may require user action. You may need to choose a controller configuration, use the touchscreen for a launcher, adjust a setting, or perform another documented tweak.
Unsupported Valve currently found the title nonfunctional on Deck. Do not assume it will work on the handheld without a significant change; investigate your separate desktop setup independently.
Unknown Valve has not checked the title. The missing badge is not evidence that the game fails. Look for current ProtonDB reports and the game’s own requirements.

Valve’s review covers controller input, support for the Deck’s 1280×800 or 1280×720 display, legible text, a seamless launcher experience, Proton support for the game and middleware, and anti-cheat behavior. A Verified or Playable badge is therefore useful evidence for Deck owners, but it does not certify every desktop Linux distribution or every combination of desktop hardware.

7. Recheck immediately before paying

Compatibility changes. Valve says its review is ongoing, with new games and updates published every day, and ProtonDB reports change as users test new versions. Reopen the store page and read the newest relevant reports immediately before purchase, especially if the game launched recently or received a major patch.

How to judge ProtonDB evidence

Prefer reports that match your system

Start with the GPU and driver, then the distribution and Proton version. A report from an NVIDIA system may not predict the result on an AMD or Intel GPU, and a report using a different driver branch may describe a bug you cannot reproduce or a fix you do not have. Compare display resolution and whether the report concerns desktop Linux or Steam Deck.

Separate launch success from playable performance

Look for specific observations: whether the game reaches its menu, whether cutscenes display correctly, whether the frame rate remains stable during play, and whether suspend, resume, or controller input works. “Runs” can mean only that the executable opens. Reports that include settings, frame-rate observations, crashes, and known workarounds provide a better basis for a purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treat fixes as conditional

A launch option, compatibility tool, or configuration change may solve one report’s problem without solving yours. Note exactly which Proton version and options the author used, and whether the fix affected single-player, multiplayer, or only the launcher. Avoid assuming that a workaround remains valid after a game or Proton update.

Multiplayer, anti-cheat, launchers, and DRM

Why online play needs a separate check

Single-player compatibility does not establish multiplayer compatibility. Online games may rely on anti-cheat services or other middleware that must initialize correctly under Proton. Check recent reports for joining servers, matchmaking, and the specific anti-cheat technology rather than stopping at “the game starts.”

Valve explicitly includes anti-cheat and all middleware in its Deck system-support criterion. If reports say the campaign works but multiplayer does not, treat the game as unsuitable for your intended online use unless you are willing to accept that limitation.

Launchers and account sign-in

A separate launcher can introduce an additional window, login flow, web view, or update process. ProtonDB reports may document a launcher that remains blank, fails to accept input, or requires a touchscreen on Deck. Record those constraints before purchase; a game that technically launches but cannot complete its sign-in flow is not practically usable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DRM and updates

DRM components can be the point of failure even when the game itself renders correctly. Updates can also alter a previously working setup. Check whether reports mention a recent patch, a changed launcher, or a Proton regression, and prefer evidence close to the date you plan to buy.

Native Linux versus Proton: a practical comparison

Question Native Linux listing Windows-only through Proton
What the store confirms The publisher supplies a Linux build through Steam. The store does not list a native Linux build.
What you must verify Hardware, drivers, distribution behavior, updates, and multiplayer services. All of those, plus Proton version, launcher, DRM, anti-cheat, and other middleware.
Best evidence after the store page Current user reports for your hardware and distribution. Several recent ProtonDB reports that match your system and intended game mode.
Does it guarantee performance? No. A native build can still exceed your hardware or have driver-specific problems. No. A successful report on another machine does not guarantee your result.
Does a Deck badge answer desktop Linux compatibility? No. The badge evaluates Deck-specific criteria. No. Deck status is useful Deck evidence, not a certification for every desktop setup.

Decision rules before you click Buy

Buy with relatively high confidence

  • The store lists SteamOS + Linux and your hardware meets the requirements.
  • For Deck, the title is Verified and recent reports do not describe a new regression.
  • For a Windows-only title, several recent ProtonDB reports match your GPU, driver, distribution, and intended single-player or multiplayer use.

Pause and investigate further

  • The only evidence is an old ProtonDB report or a report from substantially different hardware.
  • The title depends on a launcher, DRM, or anti-cheat service that reports describe as inconsistent.
  • The game is Playable on Deck and the required manual steps would be difficult for you.
  • Your machine is near the minimum requirement, leaving little headroom for Proton or high-resolution rendering.

Assume it may not meet your needs

  • Recent reports consistently show that the game cannot launch or that required multiplayer anti-cheat does not work.
  • Valve marks the title Unsupported on Deck and your purchase is specifically for Deck play.
  • The store is Windows-only, there are no useful current reports, and you cannot accept troubleshooting or configuration work.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing Steam Deck support with desktop Linux support: Deck testing uses a defined handheld display, controls, and software environment.
  • Reading only the badge color or rating: The underlying report may reveal a launcher failure, broken multiplayer, or required launch option.
  • Checking only whether the game starts: Menus, cutscenes, controllers, online services, and sustained performance all matter.
  • Ignoring drivers: Distribution and GPU-driver differences can change the result even when two users run “Linux.”
  • Using stale reports: Game patches and Proton releases can fix or break compatibility.
  • Assuming Windows-only means impossible: Proton may make the game playable, but the absence of a native listing means you need the additional checks above.

A quick checklist to save before purchase

  1. Open the Steam Store page and expand System Requirements.
  2. Note the listed operating systems, hardware, storage, launcher, and account requirements.
  3. Confirm whether SteamOS + Linux is listed.
  4. If it is not, read several recent ProtonDB reports.
  5. Match the reports’ Proton version, distribution, GPU, driver, and game mode to your setup.
  6. Check launcher, DRM, anti-cheat, and multiplayer notes separately.
  7. Compare your CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, display, and driver with the game’s requirements.
  8. If using Steam Deck, read the meaning of Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown rather than treating the badge as a universal Linux rating.
  9. Recheck the page and newest reports immediately before buying.

What to do when the evidence is uncertain

Uncertainty is itself useful information. If current reports are sparse, contradictory, or tied to hardware unlike yours, do not convert that gap into an assumption that the game works. Decide whether you are comfortable troubleshooting Proton, changing a compatibility tool, or accepting that multiplayer may be unavailable. If you need a low-friction Linux purchase, a native SteamOS + Linux listing with requirements your system exceeds is the more predictable choice. If you are buying for Deck, a current Verified result provides the clearest out-of-the-box signal, while Playable means you should be prepared to perform the stated user action.

The most reliable pre-purchase answer combines three pieces of evidence: the store’s platform and hardware requirements, current ProtonDB reports that resemble your machine, and any Deck-specific badge or middleware information relevant to how you intend to play. None of these replaces the others.
