Do not assume a Steam Frame mirroring connection is encrypted just because it uses Wi-Fi, a familiar port, or packets that look unreadable in a capture. First identify the exact app and connection path, then check what the developer says is protected and compare that claim with observed traffic. Valve’s public Steam Frame and Steam Remote Play pages describe streaming and networking, but do not confirm encryption of the Remote Play audio/video stream.
First identify what you are checking
“Steam Frame” is Valve’s standalone VR headset, designed primarily to stream a Steam library from a PC. “Steam Remote Play” is Valve’s streaming technology. The phrase “mirroring app” could also mean a separate third-party app, so a finding about one product or route should not be applied to another.

Write down the exact app name and version, its host and client devices, their operating systems, and whether the session stays on your local network or uses a remote relay. These details matter because pairing, local streaming, and relayed streaming may use different connections or protections.

What Valve’s published pages do—and do not—establish
Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone headset intended primarily for low-latency streaming from a PC. Its product materials describe a dedicated wireless adapter, dual radios, and Multi-Link Streaming. Those are connectivity and performance details, not an encryption specification for the stream. See Valve’s Steam Frame page, Steam Frame, and Valve’s Steam Frame information.

Valve’s Steam Link support page says the hardware and streaming app use Steam Remote Play and lists ports, including UDP 27031 and 27036, TCP 27036 and 27037, and additional UDP ports for VR streaming. Valve describes Remote Play as real-time video encoding over a custom, low-latency network protocol on its Remote Play page. These details help identify traffic; they do not say whether the audio/video stream is encrypted.
Keep a separate Steam feature separate: Valve explicitly says on its Local Network Game Transfers page that transferred game content is compressed but not encrypted. That statement concerns local game-file transfers, not the Remote Play audio/video stream.

Check the app’s security documentation
Look for a security page, protocol description, or technical documentation from the app developer. A broad claim such as “secure,” “private,” or “encrypted” is not enough to establish that every part of your mirroring session is covered.
- Coverage: Does the claim explicitly include initial pairing, control and input, audio/video media, and remote-relay connections? Note any exclusions.
- Authentication: How does each endpoint establish that it is communicating with the intended device or service? Encryption without reliable authentication may not prevent an attacker from impersonating an endpoint.
- Key establishment: Does the documentation explain how the devices establish or verify cryptographic keys?
- Protection: Does the stated protocol protect against both interception and tampering, rather than merely making content harder to inspect?
- Connection modes: Is the claim valid on the local network, through a relay, or both?
If the documentation does not answer these points, record the relevant part as unverified rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

Inspect a capture without over-interpreting it
A packet capture can show which devices communicate and when, but it cannot by itself prove that a stream is encrypted. Compressed, proprietary, or binary traffic may look opaque even when it lacks cryptographic protection. Similarly, a port number or the use of TCP or UDP is not a cryptographic verdict.
- Capture the relevant phases: Observe traffic during pairing, while the app is idle, and during a live mirroring session. Separating these phases helps distinguish setup or account traffic from the media stream.
- Identify endpoints and flows: Note the devices and destinations involved, whether traffic stays on the LAN or goes to a relay, and the transport and destination ports. Treat ports as clues for matching traffic, not proof of encryption.
- Correlate where possible: Compare timing and endpoints with app logs or process-level network tools available on the host. Check whether a TLS connection belongs to login or another service rather than assuming it carries the video.
- Compare with the documented protocol: Ask whether the observed flows match the app’s stated pairing, control, media, and relay paths. If the documentation is too general to make that comparison, say so.
A lock icon, an unreadable capture, or TLS on an unrelated login flow does not demonstrate that the audio/video connection is encrypted. For a high-stakes privacy decision, stronger evidence would include review of the app’s source code or a reproducible protocol analysis that specifically covers the media path and its endpoint authentication.

State the finding at the level the evidence supports
Keep documentation, observation, and independent verification distinct. For example, report that the developer’s documentation says the stream is encrypted only if it explicitly covers that stream. A capture that appears consistent with the documented protocol supports a narrower observation; it does not alone prove the cryptographic design or implementation is sound.
- Documentation claim: Name the developer and describe which connection types the statement covers.
- Observed traffic: Summarize the endpoints and session phases observed, and say that the capture is consistent with the documented behavior only when that comparison is supported.
- Not verified: Use this when the documentation or available observation does not establish encryption of the relevant media or relay connection.
Do not turn a port list, an opaque-looking stream, or a statement about a different Steam feature into a claim that Remote Play media is encrypted. Valve’s cited Remote Play pages provide networking information but do not confirm encryption of the media stream; the specific third-party app, if that is what “mirroring app” means, must be assessed on its own documentation and behavior.
Quick Recap
