The reliable way to tell whether a Steam demo works on Steam Deck is to check the demo’s own Steam store and library entries, read Valve’s compatibility details, and then run the complete demo yourself if its status is not clearly Verified. A full game’s Deck rating is not a guarantee for a separately listed demo, and an Unknown result means Valve has not tested that demo—not that it is broken.
Use the workflow below before you spend time changing Proton versions or searching forums. It separates Valve’s official status from hands-on evidence and gives you a repeatable way to decide whether a demo is worth installing.

Why a full game’s rating may not answer the demo question
Steam can treat a demo as its own app entry. That entry may have a separate store page, executable, launcher, controller behavior, video playback path, or save system. Valve’s compatibility material reports results at the title level; it does not promise that a parent game’s rating transfers to a separate demo app.
Therefore, search for the exact demo title and inspect that listing. If the demo has its own library tile after installation, select that tile when checking compatibility and when changing settings. This avoids applying the full game’s status to a different piece of software.

A rating is also a snapshot. Demo updates, SteamOS updates, Proton releases, or launcher changes can alter the experience. Treat the label as the starting point, not as a permanent guarantee.
Check the demo’s Steam store page
1. Search for the exact demo title
- Open the Steam Store on your Deck or in the Steam client.
- Search for the demo by its complete title, including any subtitle that distinguishes it from the full game.
- Open the result that is explicitly the demo. Confirm that you are not viewing the paid game’s page or a publisher collection.
On a reviewed title, Steam displays a Steam Deck compatibility badge. Open the detailed Steam Deck Compatibility section rather than stopping at the badge. Steam Support says reviewed titles expose these details in the store and library, including the requirements that were or were not met.
2. Record the result and the reasons
Write down the status and the explanatory text before installing. If the result is Playable or Unsupported, the detail panel identifies which Verified requirements are not currently met. Those reasons are more useful than the label alone: they can point to a controller-layout issue, touchscreen or mouse requirement, launcher navigation, display legibility, anti-cheat, or another system-support problem.

Verify the installed library entry on the Deck
Open compatibility details for the demo itself
- Open Library and select the installed demo, not the full game.
- Open the demo’s game information or compatibility details.
- Compare the in-library status with the store-page status and read any listed unmet requirements.
The library view is useful because it reflects the app you are about to launch and exposes the same type of compatibility explanation Valve publishes for reviewed titles. If the store page and library panel differ, use the more specific demo entry and allow Steam to refresh before drawing a conclusion.
What to do when the status is Unknown
Unknown means Valve has not tested the title. It is not evidence that the demo fails, and it is not evidence that every feature works. Move to the hands-on test in the next section and document the result for your own SteamOS, hardware, and current software versions.
Understand Valve’s four Deck labels
| Label | Valve’s meaning | What you should expect to do |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Works well on Steam Deck by default. Valve describes this experience as “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” | Launch normally first. Still test the entire demo, because a badge is a snapshot and a demo can receive updates. |
| Playable | Functions, but may require manual work, such as changing a controller layout, using the touchscreen or mouse, or navigating a launcher. | Read the unmet requirements, make the indicated adjustment, and retest every affected screen and input. |
| Unsupported | Valve currently considers the title not playable on Deck. The detail panel lists the Verified requirements that are not met. | Do not treat it as an ordinary plug-and-play install. You may investigate a Proton or community workaround, but expect missing or unreliable functionality. |
| Unknown | Valve has not tested the title. | Use a complete personal test and recent community reports; the label alone cannot predict success. |
Playable is not a synonym for unusable. A demo that needs one mouse click in a launcher or a different controller layout can still be a good experience. Conversely, Verified is not a promise of a particular frame rate or of perfect behavior after a future update; it means the title met Valve’s criteria for working well by default when reviewed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Run the complete demo, not just the opening screen
When the status is Unknown, Playable, Unsupported, or otherwise unclear, launch the demo and exercise the whole path you expect to use. Valve’s published criteria cover input, display, seamlessness, and system support, so a meaningful test must go beyond “the executable opened.”

First launch and menus
- Start the demo from its Steam library entry and note whether it reaches the main menu without a crash, blank window, or stuck loading screen.
- Check every first-run prompt, including language, graphics, accessibility, and controller configuration screens.
- If a launcher appears, verify that it can be navigated with the Deck controls or identify the exact point where touchscreen or mouse input is required.
- If the demo requests sign-in, confirm whether the sign-in screen accepts Deck input and whether the demo can proceed when the service is unavailable.
Controller input and button prompts
- Move through menus with the built-in controls, then test the primary actions, camera or cursor movement, pause, back, confirm, and any shoulder or stick-click functions the demo uses.
- Check that on-screen prompts match the controls you actually press. A title can launch successfully yet be awkward if prompts assume a keyboard or show the wrong button symbols.
- For a Playable result, apply the suggested controller-layout change and repeat the same actions. If touchscreen or mouse use is required, identify whether it is occasional setup or a repeated part of play.
Text and display legibility
- Read menus, subtitles, tutorials, inventory screens, and error messages at the Deck’s 1280×800 or 1280×720 display modes.
- Check for clipped text, unreadable small type, missing UI elements, incorrect scaling, or a window that does not fit the screen.
- Open the demo’s graphics settings and confirm that changes apply without forcing an unusable resolution or requiring keyboard-only navigation.
Graphics, audio, and stability
- Play far enough to reach a representative scene rather than judging performance in an empty opening area.
- Watch for severe stutter, rendering glitches, missing effects, freezes, crashes, or audio that cuts out when scenes change.
- Test volume controls, dialogue, subtitles, and any video or cutscene playback. A demo that plays but cannot show a required video is not a complete success.
Saves, suspend, and resume
- Create or trigger a save, exit to the Deck interface, suspend the device, and resume the demo.
- Confirm that your progress remains available and that controls, audio, and graphics recover after resume.
- Quit and relaunch once to verify that the demo does not depend on a one-time successful session.
Record the result as a short matrix: launch, menus, controls, text, graphics, audio, saves, suspend/resume, and any launcher or sign-in requirement. “Works” is only meaningful when the functions you need all pass.
Use the compatibility reasons to choose your next step
| What you observe | Next action | How to judge the result |
|---|---|---|
| Verified and the full test passes | Keep the default configuration. | Suitable for normal Deck use unless a later update changes behavior. |
| Playable with a clear input or launcher note | Make the listed manual adjustment, such as selecting a controller layout or using touchscreen input. | Acceptable if the adjustment is practical and the complete demo remains stable. |
| Unknown but launches and passes your checklist | Keep your working settings and note your SteamOS and Proton versions. | Usable for your setup, while recognizing that Valve has not certified it. |
| Unsupported or fails during launch | Read the unmet requirements, then investigate Proton and recent community reports. | Proceed only if a workaround fixes the specific failure and does not break another required feature. |
| Launches but fails controls, text, video, saves, or resume | Treat the failed function as the deciding issue; do not call the demo fully compatible merely because it starts. | Wait for an update or seek a targeted workaround rather than repeatedly reinstalling. |
Try a different Proton version when a Windows demo will not start
For a Windows demo that does not launch, Proton is the relevant compatibility layer to test. Do not change it pre-emptively when the default configuration already works; a different version can change behavior, and Valve notes that new Proton releases include fixes that can alter compatibility results.
- Open Library and highlight the demo.
- Press the Deck’s Menu button.
- Choose Properties, then open Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select a different Proton version that is already installed.
- Close Properties, launch the demo, and repeat the complete test rather than checking only whether a window appears.
Change one variable at a time and note the version you tried. If an update to the demo, SteamOS, or Proton arrives, retest with the default selection before assuming the old forced version is still best. Remove the forced choice when it is no longer needed so Steam can use its current default.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA Proton change cannot repair every failure. An anti-cheat requirement, launcher sign-in flow, video path, display problem, or controller issue may remain even when the executable starts. Use the unmet-requirement text and your test matrix to identify what actually improved.

Use ProtonDB as supporting evidence, not certification
Search the exact demo name on ProtonDB after checking Steam’s own listing. ProtonDB aggregates user reports and configuration advice for Linux and Steam Deck, which can reveal launch options, Proton versions, or workarounds that the Valve panel does not spell out.
- Prefer recent reports that identify the reporter’s SteamOS, Proton version, and hardware.
- Match the report to the demo app, not merely to the full game with a similar name.
- Look for multiple reports describing the same symptom and fix rather than relying on one old entry.
- Separate “launches” from “playable throughout”: read comments for controls, text, videos, saves, suspend/resume, and stability.
ProtonDB is community evidence, not Valve certification. Use it to form a troubleshooting hypothesis, then verify the proposed fix on your own Deck and record whether the entire demo works.

Best Value
Calling Unknown “broken”
Unknown records a lack of Valve testing. Replace the assumption with a complete hands-on test and current community evidence.
Testing only launch
A successful first launch says nothing about controller prompts, tiny text, graphics settings, audio, saves, suspend/resume, launcher navigation, sign-in, or video playback. Exercise those paths before deciding.
Changing Proton without a baseline
Forcing a version before trying the default makes it difficult to know what helped and can introduce a new failure. Establish the default result, change one Proton version, and retest.

Relying on an old report
Compatibility can change with demo, Proton, SteamOS, and launcher updates. Date your own notes and favor recent reports that match your environment.
A repeatable checklist for every demo
- Find the exact demo store page.
- Read the Steam Deck badge and open the detailed compatibility section.
- Install the demo and select its own library entry.
- Confirm the in-library status and note unmet requirements.
- Test first launch, menus, controller input, and button prompts.
- Check text at 1280×800 or 1280×720 and review graphics settings.
- Test audio, subtitles, videos, saves, suspend/resume, and relaunch.
- If a Windows demo fails to start, try one different installed Proton version through Properties > Compatibility.
- Search ProtonDB for recent reports matching your SteamOS, Proton version, and hardware.
- Recheck after major demo, SteamOS, Proton, or launcher updates.
What can—and cannot—be concluded from published ratings
Valve’s labels provide a useful, title-specific snapshot and explain unmet Verified requirements for Playable and Unsupported results. They do not provide a universal success percentage for Steam demos. No authoritative percentage of demos working on Steam Deck is established here, and ProtonDB’s changing report totals are not a demo-success rate.
The defensible conclusion for one demo is narrower: identify its own Valve status, understand the listed caveats, and verify the functions you care about on your Deck. That method remains useful whether the label is Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown.
