Check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility rating and notes on its Steam store page, then look for several recent reports from Steam Deck players on ProtonDB. The rating tells you about compatibility and handheld usability—not a guaranteed frame rate—so community reports are the better clue to performance, settings, stutters, and workarounds.
1. Find the game’s Steam Deck rating
On the game’s Steam store page or in your Steam library, look for its Steam Deck compatibility rating and the accompanying details. On the Deck, the first tab in the store highlights games Valve identifies as great on Deck. Valve says its tested ratings apply to both LCD and OLED models; that does not mean every game will have identical measured performance on each model. Valve’s Steam Deck: Deck Verified page explains the program.

2. Understand what the label tells you
- Verified: Valve describes this as working well on Deck right out of the box.
- Playable: The game may work, but you might need to make manual adjustments.
- Unsupported: Valve currently identifies the game as not functional on Deck.
- Unknown: Valve has not completed a review. It is not, by itself, evidence that the game fails to run.
Valve’s review is ongoing, so a rating can change as review coverage, games, or system software changes. Read the notes behind the label rather than treating the category as a performance score.
3. Read the compatibility notes, not just the badge
Valve’s checks cover whether the game’s controls work and show the right icons, whether its display is supported and legible, whether the experience is seamless (including navigating launchers), and whether system support such as Proton and applicable anti-cheat works. These checks help answer whether a game is usable on the handheld. Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility documentation describes the criteria.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch 1 (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2), smartphones, and tablets
- Boost your gaming experience with up to 160MB/s read for fast load times
- A2-rated app performance lets you quickly access and enjoy games and apps without lag for an enhanced gaming experience and a competitive edge
- Store more of your favorite games and other content with capacities up to 2TB
- Built to endure with temperature resistance, waterproofing, x-ray protection, and more
Those criteria do not set a minimum frame-rate target. A Verified badge is not a promise of a particular FPS, smooth frame pacing, or identical results across games and configurations.
4. Check recent reports from Steam Deck players
For performance clues, open the game’s ProtonDB page and look for multiple recent reports that specifically describe play on Steam Deck. Valve’s Proton documentation points readers to ProtonDB for community compatibility reports. ProtonDB is community-submitted evidence, not an official Valve rating or a controlled benchmark.
Rank #2
- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch 1 (NOT compatible with Nintendo-Switch 2), smartphones, and tablets
- Boost your gaming experience with up to 160MB/s read for fast load times
- A2-rated app performance lets you quickly access and enjoy games and apps without lag for an enhanced gaming experience and a competitive edge
- Store more of your favorite games and other content with capacities up to 2TB
- Built to endure with temperature resistance, waterproofing, x-ray protection, and more
- Recency and context: Check when each report was posted and whether it identifies SteamOS, Proton, or the Deck model. Older reports may describe a different software or game version.
- Consistency: Look for descriptions of sustained play, frame-rate stability, and stutters—not only whether the game launched.
- Settings and trade-offs: Note graphics settings, battery or display conditions if reported, and any reductions needed for a smoother experience.
- Friction: Check for launcher steps, anti-cheat problems, crashes, or a workaround that is essential rather than optional.
One report can be a useful clue, but several recent, specific accounts give you a better basis for judging whether the reported experience matches your expectations. Anecdotes still do not guarantee the same result on your Deck.
5. Compare games on the same questions
If you are choosing between titles, keep compatibility and performance evidence separate. Compare the official rating and its stated reason, then weigh recent Deck-specific reports against your intended settings and play conditions.

| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Official rating | The category and Valve’s stated reason or compatibility notes. |
| Community evidence | How many recent reports specifically concern Steam Deck, and how closely their software and hardware context matches yours. |
| Play quality | Reported frame-rate consistency, stutter, and settings needed to achieve an acceptable experience. |
| Setup and reliability | Whether launchers, anti-cheat, or manual workarounds add friction or prevent play. |
6. Verify performance in play when you can
If you already have access to the game—for example, through a purchase or another legitimate way to play it—use Steam’s in-game performance overlay to observe it while running. Valve Support documents how to enable the performance monitor: Steam Support: Steam Deck Performance Overlay. This is a way to check actual play, not a pre-purchase benchmark when you do not have access to the title.
