A Matter logo is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every feature will work in every app.
1. List the smart home setup you already have
Write down the platform or app you use—such as Google Home, Apple Home, Alexa, or SmartThings—along with the exact model of each hub or controller, any bridges, and the network equipment relevant to smart home devices. Match model numbers, not just brand names: two products from one manufacturer may support different platforms or protocols.

Check the platform’s current device and hub requirements as well as the device maker’s own compatibility list. For example, Google publishes the hub and setup requirements for Matter in Prepare your smart home for Matter.
2. Confirm what “works with” means for that exact model
Look for a platform compatibility badge or a Matter logo on the product page or packaging, then verify the exact model in the manufacturer’s current documentation. A device described as working with a voice assistant may use the manufacturer’s account and cloud service rather than appearing as a native Matter device in that platform. Google distinguishes its “Works with Google Home” device integrations from Matter setup in Set up, manage, and control Matter-enabled devices with Google Home.

Check which controls you need, not just whether the device can be added. Platform support for Matter device categories and features can differ and change over time. If you rely on vendor-specific controls, read the maker’s app instructions too. TP-Link, for instance, advises setting up its Matter devices through Tapo or Kasa first to retain access to full feature sets; see its Matter setup guide.
3. Match the device’s protocol to a hub or network you have
Matter is an interoperability standard, not a single radio. Matter devices can communicate over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. The connection method determines what your home needs:
- Wi-Fi Matter device: Confirm that your home Wi-Fi meets the device maker’s requirements and that your platform has a compatible Matter hub.
- Ethernet Matter device: Check the product manual for its wired-network requirements and confirm that the platform supports that device category.
- Thread Matter device: Confirm that a Thread border router is available for the platform you plan to use. A Matter-over-Thread device cannot complete its intended setup without one.
- Zigbee or Z-Wave device: Verify that the particular hub or bridge supports the device. Do not assume that a platform hub has a Zigbee or Z-Wave radio simply because it supports Matter.
Google’s current Matter guidance explains the supported transports and the role of hubs and Thread border routers in Prepare your smart home for Matter.

4. Check the platform’s hub and network prerequisites
For Google Home, adding Matter devices requires a compatible Matter-enabled hub. If you want to add a Thread device, the Google Home hub must also act as a Thread border router. Google also requires IPv6 on the home network for Matter to work properly. Its guidance warns that setup may initially appear successful without IPv6, while control and other functions later fail.
Check the hub model and network conditions before you buy, using Google’s Matter preparation guidance and Google Home setup instructions. Requirements differ by platform, so do not apply Google’s specific prerequisites to another ecosystem without checking that platform’s documentation.
5. Compare devices on the same practical criteria
If you are choosing between two products, compare them against the same questions rather than relying on a brand or logo alone:

| What to check | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Platform and device category | Whether the exact model and category are currently supported by the app or ecosystem you use. |
| Protocol and existing equipment | Whether it uses Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Thread, Zigbee, or Z-Wave—and whether your existing network, hub, or bridge supports that connection. |
| Extra controller needs | Whether setup requires a new Matter hub or, for Thread, a Thread border router. |
| Available controls | Which functions are exposed in third-party apps and which are available only in the manufacturer’s app. |
| Setup prerequisites | Required network settings, app or firmware updates, and maker-specific commissioning steps. |
Manufacturer hub lists and platform support can change. Check current model and firmware information in the official product documentation rather than relying on an older compatibility chart.

6. Understand Matter sharing across apps
Matter multi-admin can let a compatible device be added to more than one certified smart home app. Each participating platform still needs its own compatible Matter hub, and sharing must follow the device maker’s commissioning instructions. Google explains local control and multi-admin behavior in its Matter device setup and control guide.
Google describes Matter devices as operating locally over the home network for in-home control. When you send a remote command from away, the command travels through the internet and cloud to the hub, which then controls the device locally. Multi-admin does not eliminate the hub requirement for either platform.

7. Complete setup and troubleshoot methodically
- Update first: Install current versions of the relevant smart home and manufacturer apps, and check for device and hub firmware updates.
- Use the maker’s commissioning instructions: Follow the specified first-setup path, especially if the manufacturer says to configure the device in its own app to retain features.
- Verify network and controller requirements: Confirm the required Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, IPv6 where required, and the correct Matter hub or Thread border router.
- For a second app, use the sharing process: Add the device through the manufacturer’s Matter multi-admin instructions, and confirm the second platform has its own compatible hub.
- If setup or control fails: Recheck the exact model’s compatibility, the device category, network settings, controller, app, and firmware. Then consult the maker’s troubleshooting instructions or contact its support team.
Platform-specific details to verify
Google Home
Google requires a compatible Matter hub for Matter setup and IPv6 for proper Matter operation; a Thread device also needs a Thread border router. Google notes that support for Matter device categories can arrive at different times, so confirm that the particular category and controls you want are supported.
Amazon Alexa
Amazon’s Matter documentation describes support on compatible Echo devices for a subset of Matter 1.5 and earlier over Wi-Fi and Thread. Thread commissioning requires a Thread border router. This is an implementation detail for compatible Echo models, not evidence that every Echo supports every Matter device type. Check Amazon’s Matter connection guidance for the model and device category you intend to use.
