Steam’s built-in wishlist notifications are a useful no-extra-service baseline, but they have specific discount and account requirements. The right choice depends on whether you want to inspect a game’s past prices, discover offers across stores, or simply get an email when a Steam wishlist game qualifies for a notification.

How to choose: price history or an alert?
Use price history to judge a sale
Price history helps answer: “Is this price low compared with what this tracker has recorded for this game?” SteamDB provides tables and graphs on individual game pages; IsThereAnyDeal also has game-specific history pages. Compare the title in the region and currency where you plan to buy, and check the tracker’s available history before treating a low-price label as decisive.

Use a waitlist when you want a notification
If you want to act only when a game reaches a price or discount that suits you, IsThereAnyDeal’s waitlist and configurable notification rules are a better fit than checking a chart repeatedly. Use cross-store listings carefully
For offers outside Steam, check the retailer, region, platform, and key activation details. A lower price is useful only if the offer works for your account and the version you intend to play.

What Steam’s built-in discount emails require
Steamworks documentation says a wishlist discount email is triggered only when the discount is at least 20%, applies to the lowest-priced package, and lasts more than eight hours. The account also needs a verified email address. Delivery can take hours, and a one-to-two-week cooldown may be extended during busy periods. These rules describe notification eligibility—not whether a discount is good value. See Valve’s wishlist documentation.
Because of those conditions, a missing or delayed message does not prove that a game was never discounted. If the timing or threshold matters to you, use a tracker with a waitlist or check the game’s price history directly.

Why region and currency matter
Steam says its pricing system covers 37 currencies and four region groups, with publishers choosing prices for each currency and region group. That does not mean every game is sold in every currency. Use your local Steam storefront as the reference, and make sure a tracker is showing the same region before comparing prices. Valve’s Steamworks Pricing Explorer describes the system; its conversion methods use public data as of January 2026.

How much confidence should you put in a recorded low?
A historical-low label is only as broad as the service’s captured data for that game and region. SteamDB’s individual game pages contain price histories, but a recorded low should not automatically be read as a verified all-time record across every title, region, or data source. As one dated example of the limits of a tracker-wide snapshot, SteamDB’s dynamic tracker page reported daily captured prices for 92 games since July 2, 2026, when viewed on October 4, 2026. That count describes that page’s stated coverage at that time—not SteamDB’s total game coverage. See the SteamDB tracker page and its FAQ.

Past sale patterns can help you decide whether to wait, but they cannot guarantee a future discount. Publishers choose prices and discounts, and SteamDB says it does not know which specific games or prices publishers will select for an upcoming sale. SteamDB also notes that an expanded Steam-native 30-day price-history feature was only a possibility reported in April 2026, not a confirmed universal rollout. Check your live store and region rather than assuming the feature is available; the report is from PC Gamer, April 16, 2026.

A practical setup for finding deals
- For a Steam-only purchase: open the game’s SteamDB page and inspect its price graph or table for your region and currency.
- For a target-price alert: add the game to IsThereAnyDeal’s waitlist and set notification rules to match what you would actually pay.
- For games already on your Steam wishlist: keep Steam’s email notifications as a baseline, but verify your account email and remember the documented threshold and timing conditions.
- Before buying elsewhere: check the retailer, region, platform, and activation details, then compare the offer with the relevant price history.
