For a routine reboot, unplug the USB-C cable, hold Power for up to 30 seconds until the speaker turns off, then press Power again. This normal reset keeps saved settings. A factory restore is different: it erases settings and requires you to remove the speaker’s old Bluetooth pairing and reconnect.
Choose the right reset
| Option | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Normal reset | Reboots the speaker without clearing its settings. | You want to restart the speaker or try a low-impact troubleshooting step. |
| Factory restore | Returns the speaker to its factory state and erases settings. | A normal reset has not resolved a persistent problem and you are ready to pair the speaker again. |

How to reset a Bose SoundLink Max without erasing settings
- Disconnect the USB-C cable from the speaker.
- Hold the Power button for up to 30 seconds, until the speaker powers off.
- Press Power to turn it on again. After restart, the power light indicates the battery level.
How to factory restore the SoundLink Max
Use this only when you intend to erase the speaker’s settings. Bose’s procedure is:
- Hold the minus and plus buttons together for 15 seconds.
- Wait for the power light to blink white for three seconds, which indicates the restore sequence.
- On your phone, tablet, or computer, remove the SoundLink Max from the Bluetooth device list, then pair it again.
Fix Bluetooth pairing and connection problems
Put the speaker in pairing mode
In the Bose app, open the SoundLink Max product’s Source control, select Bluetooth, and tap Add New. Then select the speaker in the source device’s Bluetooth settings. Bose also provides a Bose app connection guide.

If the speaker still will not connect
- Confirm the speaker is in pairing mode before choosing it in the source device’s Bluetooth settings.
- If you performed a factory restore, remove the previous SoundLink Max entry from the device’s Bluetooth list before pairing again.
- Restart the phone, tablet, or computer and try again.
- Try pairing with a second source device. If the problem occurs with only one source, that helps narrow the issue to that source, but does not by itself prove the cause.
Bose’s current SoundLink Max support material cited here does not establish a model-specific button sequence for clearing remembered devices. Do not use button timings or light patterns published for a different Bose model.

- Play audio from a different music source.
- Disconnect a second device connected to the speaker.
- Disable audio-enhancement features on the source device or in the music app.
- If the speaker was exposed to water, let it dry before trying playback again.
These steps address audio quality; they are separate from rebooting or restoring the speaker.
