How to Check Whether a Roguelike Will Run Well on Steam Deck

A roguelike “runs well” on Steam Deck only when it stays smooth in demanding rooms, keeps text readable, accepts your controls, uses battery at a reasonable rate, and does not require an afternoon of fixes. The quickest reliable method is to combine the Steam Store compatibility detail, recent ProtonDB reports, and a representative on-device test that reaches the game’s busiest scenes.

Use the workflow below before deciding that a title is suitable. A green badge is a useful starting filter, not a promise that every frame-rate target or late-run effect load will meet your preference.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Define “runs well” before you install

Different players mean different things by “well.” One person accepts a locked 30 frames per second (FPS) and occasional shader stutter; another expects a stable 60 FPS. Decide your target first, then test against the same standard for every game you compare.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Axis What to observe A practical pass condition
Frame rate and frame time Average FPS is less important than consistency during combat, room transitions and large effect bursts. Your chosen 30, 40 or 60 FPS cap remains stable in the heaviest scene you reach, without recurring hitching.
Resolution and legibility Menus, damage numbers, item descriptions and status icons at the Deck’s screen resolution. You can read and select important information without magnification, a desktop session or repeated squinting.
Input Built-in controller mapping, analog movement, menus, shortcuts and any keyboard or touchscreen dependency. Every frequent action works from the controls you intend to use; touch or keyboard is not required for ordinary play.
Compatibility work Launchers, Proton changes, launch options, custom layouts and one-time configuration. The required setup is documented, repeatable and short enough that you would willingly do it after an update.
Battery and power APU power, discharge rate and battery behavior during a representative run. Runtime and heat are acceptable for the way you plan to play, rather than only for the opening room.

Write down your target and observations. That prevents a game that feels fine in a quiet first room from being misclassified after effects, enemies or simulation load increase.

Use the Steam Store badge as the first filter

Open the game’s Steam Store page and its Steam Deck compatibility section before installing. Valve assigns one of four categories:

Badge Valve’s meaning How to use it
Verified Works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box. Valve’s wording is: “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” Start with default settings, but still check your preferred frame-rate target and the late-run workload.
Playable May require manual tweaking. Open the detailed compatibility notes and identify the exact issue before deciding whether the workaround is acceptable.
Unsupported Currently not functional on Steam Deck. Treat it as a stop signal unless you are deliberately experimenting and can tolerate failure.
Unknown Not checked yet. Do not infer quality from the absence of a badge; rely on reports and your own test.

Valve’s review considers controller and input behavior, display resolution and legibility, and Proton or middleware support. Those checks explain why a title can be marked Playable for a small launcher or touchscreen issue even though its combat performance is strong. Conversely, a game can launch successfully while still needing a different controller layout, Proton version or text adjustment.

Read the compatibility detail instead of stopping at the color

In the same Steam Deck section, open the list of requirements and note which one failed or received a warning. Translate that note into a test plan:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A launcher warning means you should test whether the launcher accepts controller input and whether it appears every time.
  • A text or resolution warning means you should inspect item descriptions, tooltips, map labels and combat indicators at the Deck’s native display settings.
  • An input warning means you should map movement, attacks, dodge, inventory and confirmation before starting a serious run.
  • A Proton or middleware warning means you should look for a known compatibility tool or launch option in current community reports.

Keep the badge and the failed requirement in your notes. A later SteamOS, game or Proton update can change behavior, so the date of your check matters.

Cross-check current ProtonDB reports

ProtonDB is a community source of Linux and Steam Deck compatibility reports. Search for the exact game and read the newest Deck-specific entries rather than relying on the aggregate rating alone.

For each useful report, record:

  • the Deck model if the author states one;
  • the Proton version or compatibility tool used;
  • launch options, controller layouts or other fixes;
  • crashes, freezes, black screens and launcher behavior;
  • where performance was observed, such as early rooms, boss fights or later biomes;
  • whether a recent game or SteamOS update changed the result.

Give more weight to reports that describe a full run and the same type of scene you care about. A one-line “works” report confirms only that someone launched the game. A detailed account of stable frame times through an effects-heavy boss room is more useful for a performance decision.

Community reports are evidence, not a guarantee. Game builds, SteamOS, Proton and Deck hardware revisions change. When reports disagree, treat the disagreement as a reason to test both the documented tool and the current default, not as proof that either result is universal.

Set up a controlled Deck test

For a Playable or Unknown title, reserve one session for testing rather than immediately committing to a long run. Use the following sequence so your observations are comparable.

  1. Install and launch without modifications. This establishes whether the current default configuration starts, reaches the main menu and recognizes the built-in controls.
  2. Choose a frame-rate target. Pick 30, 40 or 60 FPS according to your preference. Do not judge smoothness while switching caps repeatedly; test one target long enough to expose recurring hitches.
  3. Open the Quick Access performance overlay. Watch FPS and frame-time consistency, CPU and GPU load, power draw and battery behavior while playing. Record what happens rather than relying on a single peak number.
  4. Navigate every important menu. Check save selection, accessibility, settings, inventory, map and any character or item screen. A game that runs but requires a mouse for routine navigation has a meaningful setup cost.
  5. Play through representative content. Reach ordinary combat, an effects-heavy room, a transition and a late-run or high-enemy scene whenever the game permits.
  6. Repeat after any workaround. If you change Proton, a launch option or a controller layout, replay the same type of scene. Otherwise you cannot tell whether the change helped or merely coincided with a quieter room.

Keep the overlay unobtrusive while judging playability. The goal is to observe sustained behavior, not to chase the highest displayed FPS.

Stress-test the situations that expose weak performance

Roguelikes often begin with a sparse room and become much heavier as enemies, particles, summons, lighting and procedural effects accumulate. Your test should deliberately include:

  • the first combat encounter, to catch basic input or shader problems;
  • a room with many simultaneous enemies or projectiles;
  • the game’s most visually intense attack, spell or environmental effect;
  • door, elevator, biome or level transitions, where traversal or shader stutter may appear;
  • menus opened during or immediately after combat, to check focus and controller navigation;
  • a late-run, elite, boss or high-combination scene, when available.

Watch for short freezes when a new effect appears, repeated hitching as rooms load, delayed input during enemy waves and frame-time spikes that the average FPS conceals. If the opening room is smooth but stacked effects make dodging unreliable, the game does not meet a “runs well” standard for action-focused play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check text and display behavior at the Deck’s resolution

Small text is a functional issue in a roguelike, not merely a visual preference. Read an item description, compare two upgrades, inspect a status effect and follow the map without moving your face closer to the screen. Check both handheld viewing distance and the display mode you normally use.

Look for text that is clipped, rendered through a desktop-only launcher, or hidden behind a cursor that is difficult to control. Test whether UI scaling, font-size, safe-area or resolution options actually persist after restarting. If the game is Playable because of a readability caveat, decide whether the adjustment solves the problem across every screen, not just the first menu.

Verify controller support and input latency

Play several minutes using only the controls you expect to use away from a desk. Test analog movement at low and high speed, the primary attack, dodge or dash, interact, inventory, map, pause and any radial or quick-select menu. Confirm that focus moves predictably through settings and reward screens.

Some games launch with a controller but leave a keyboard shortcut essential for a launcher, naming screen or confirmation dialog. Note that dependency explicitly. A community layout can solve a missing binding, but it adds a maintenance step when the game changes its input scheme. Test the layout after loading a save and after returning from a run; focus bugs often appear outside the opening menu.

During dense combat, compare a button press with the on-screen response. A stable FPS number does not help if input is delayed by a frame-time spike or if an overlay, launcher or wireless device introduces intermittent missed presses.

Interpret frame rate and frame-time data together

Use the target that matches your tolerance:

Target When it can make sense What to reject
30 FPS Turn-based or slower roguelikes, or demanding games where consistency matters more than animation fluidity. Frequent dips, long frame-time spikes or combat input that feels delayed.
40 FPS A middle ground when 60 FPS is too demanding but 30 FPS feels sluggish. A cap that is reached only in empty rooms and collapses when effects stack.
60 FPS Fast action, rhythm-sensitive dodging and players who value maximum responsiveness. Unstable pacing, repeated traversal stutter or power draw that makes the battery impractical.

Do not call a game 60-FPS capable because the counter briefly reaches 60. Let the cap run through the busiest scene you can reach. Note whether the problem is a sustained CPU or GPU limit, a one-time shader hitch, a transition stall or an input issue; each points to a different remedy.

Measure battery and power in context

Two roguelikes can have similar graphics but different battery behavior because simulation, effects and frame-rate targets load the Deck’s CPU and GPU differently. Valve’s current technical specifications list a 7 nm AMD APU with a Zen 2 four-core/eight-thread CPU, eight RDNA 2 GPU compute units, 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory and a 40 Wh battery. The same specification page states an APU power range of 4–15 W and a gameplay battery range of 2–8 hours.

Specification Valve-listed figure Why it matters in your test
CPU Zen 2, 4 cores / 8 threads Enemy simulation, pathfinding and many simultaneous entities can become CPU-limited even when graphics appear simple.
GPU 8 RDNA 2 compute units Particles, lighting, post-processing and high output resolution can raise GPU load during effects-heavy rooms.
Memory 16 GB LPDDR5 Large scenes and background processes share a fixed memory pool; watch for stutter rather than assuming launch success proves headroom.
Battery 40 Wh Runtime depends on the game, cap, brightness, audio and wireless settings; compare under your normal setup.
APU power 4–15 W Higher sustained draw can shorten a session even when frame rate is stable.
Stated gameplay range 2–8 hours This is a broad platform range, not a promise for a specific roguelike.

Record power draw and battery behavior in the same demanding scene used for frame-time testing. A low-power opening menu can make a game look efficient while a late-run simulation draws substantially more. Judge whether the result fits your normal commute, travel or sofa session rather than comparing one title’s best-case menu reading with another’s combat reading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply fixes in a controlled order

If a game fails to launch or has a documented compatibility issue, change one variable at a time and keep a note of the result. The official Steam Support path for forcing a compatibility tool is:

  1. Open Library.
  2. Highlight the game.
  3. Open Menu, then Properties.
  4. Select Compatibility.
  5. Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
  6. Choose the Proton version identified by a current, game-specific report, then launch and repeat the representative test.

Do not assume that the newest or oldest Proton version is automatically best. Use the version named in a recent report, then verify menus, controls and heavy scenes yourself. If the report recommends a launch option, apply only that option and document it so you can remove it if a later update changes behavior.

Controller layouts and in-game text settings are lower-risk adjustments when they address the exact issue you observed. Avoid collecting unrelated tweaks: every additional change makes future troubleshooting and update recovery harder. If a workaround fixes launch but leaves unreadable text, broken focus or unstable late-run performance, record the title as conditional rather than successful.

Steam Deck HQ’s roguelike settings directory can provide useful title-specific settings context, while ProtonDB supplies community compatibility details. Treat both as starting points for your own dated test, not as substitutes for reaching demanding content.

Use the refund window as a test budget

Valve’s published wording says refunds are generally available when you request one within 14 days of purchase and the title has less than two hours of playtime. Policy wording can change, so check the live Steam refund page before relying on those limits.

If you are uncertain about a Playable or Unknown game, spend that allowance deliberately:

  1. Install and perform the default launch test.
  2. Read the compatibility detail and current ProtonDB reports.
  3. Apply only the most relevant documented fix, if needed.
  4. Reach a representative combat, transition and late-run scene.
  5. Check text, controls, frame time and power draw before approaching two hours.

Do not use the entire period on launcher troubleshooting and leave no time for the gameplay test. If the title cannot meet your predefined axes within a reasonable setup effort, request the refund under the live policy rather than treating a technically successful launch as a satisfactory result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recognize common failure patterns

It launches, but the first heavy room stutters

Return to the overlay and identify whether the spike coincides with effects, enemy count or a transition. Test the documented Proton version and a lower target cap one at a time. If the same late-run scene remains inconsistent, classify the game by that scene, not by its opening performance.

The game is smooth, but menus are awkward

Check for a community controller layout or an in-game navigation setting. Test inventory, map, settings and post-run reward screens. If a keyboard or touchscreen remains necessary for routine actions, include that ongoing dependency in the setup-burden result.

Text is technically present but unreadable

Try the game’s own UI scale, font or resolution options and restart to confirm they persist. Inspect every information-dense screen. A fix that helps one menu but leaves item descriptions or status effects illegible is incomplete.

Battery falls much faster than expected

Compare the same scene at your selected cap and note APU power in the overlay. A higher frame-rate target or effects-heavy simulation can explain the increase. If the game is stable only at a power level that does not suit your normal sessions, mark that trade-off clearly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A workaround stops working after an update

Remove unnecessary launch options, retest the default tool and consult newer game-specific reports. Keep your notes dated so you can distinguish a changed game build from a change in your Deck configuration.

Make the final decision

Classify the result using the strictest requirement that matters to you:

  • Good fit: your chosen cap remains consistent in demanding scenes, text and controls work as intended, battery behavior is acceptable, and setup is minimal.
  • Conditional fit: the game is enjoyable after a documented, repeatable workaround or a compromise such as 30 FPS, but that trade-off should be acceptable before purchase.
  • Poor fit: late-run frame pacing, input, legibility or launch reliability fails your requirement, or the fixes are too fragile to maintain.

This classification is more useful than the badge alone because it records what you actually need from a roguelike: dependable performance when a run is at its busiest, readable information when choices matter, controls that do not interrupt play, and a setup you will tolerate every time you launch.
