Identify the exact promo first, then compare it with a reliable reference and inspect the card under good light. Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often easy to see through when held up to bright light, but no single visual check proves a card is genuine. If the card is graded, verify the certification record and compare it with the physical card and holder; when doubt remains, ask a trading-card specialist to assess it.
Start by identifying the exact promo
“Pokémon promo” covers cards from many releases, languages, and printings. Before comparing, note the card name, promo or set number, language, and any release or distribution details available from the seller. Find a reference for that specific printing rather than relying on a generic image of another promo.

Compare the artwork, typography, symbols, wording, borders, and surface treatment with the reference. Pokémon Support provides general advice about counterfeit cards, not an official, promo-by-promo authentication checklist, so an image match is one part of the assessment—not proof.

Use bright light as a screening check
Hold the card up to a bright light and look for unusual transparency. Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards are often easy to see through this way and recommends it as a way to identify a possible fake. Treat the result as a warning sign, not a definitive test: the guidance does not establish a universal pass-or-fail standard for every promo.

Compare visible details
Under strong, even light, compare the front and back with the matching reference. Check whether the print, text, colors, alignment, and finish appear consistent. A 10× jeweler’s loupe can help you look more closely, but magnification alone cannot authenticate a card. Microscopic pattern comparison is among the specialist methods described in PSA’s 2025 Fraud Report; it should not be confused with a conclusive home test.
Do not tear, bend, cut, wet, heat, or apply chemicals to a collectible card. Pokémon’s advice supports light inspection, not destructive testing.

If it is graded, check the record and the item
- Enter or scan the certification number using PSA’s official Cert Verification page.
- Compare the returned card identity and any available images or details with the exact card and holder in front of you.
- If the label, card, or seller’s description does not line up with the record, pause and seek another assessment rather than relying on the number alone.
PSA warns: “Verification of certification numbers on the PSA Certification database does not eliminate risk.” A counterfeit holder may reuse a real number taken from public information, so a matching database entry does not establish that the physical card and holder correspond to that record.

PSA describes its current LightHouse label as including an illumination effect, a UV logo pattern, a fugitive-ink graphic pattern, and a QR code linking to certification verification. PSA also says its holder is designed to make tampering more apparent. These are PSA-specific features, and label designs change over time. An older genuine holder may not have every feature listed for the current label; assess it against PSA’s information for the relevant label generation rather than rejecting it for that reason alone. For a high-value card or a case where documentation matters, consider a recognized authentication provider and verify its current terms before submitting. Neither a visual inspection nor an online certification lookup guarantees that an item offered for sale is genuine.

What the checks can—and cannot—establish
