Some Pokémon promo cards sell for substantial sums, but “promo” does not mean rare or valuable. It describes how a card was distributed—not its price. To estimate a card’s value, identify the exact version, assess its condition, and compare it with recent completed sales for the same card and variant.
What makes a Pokémon card a promo?
A promo is distributed outside the regular booster-pack system. Collector-guide author Steven Theodore describes one as “a Pokémon card that was given out rather than packed into a booster.” Many promos have a black star and “PROMO” wording in the expansion-symbol area, but that mark is an identifier, not a scarcity rating. The same broad label covers cards with very different print quantities, distribution routes, and demand. Theo TCG

Which Pokémon promo cards are actually worth money?
There is no single price for promo cards. A widely distributed retail promo and a card tied to a limited event can have very different supply, but distribution alone does not determine price. Collector interest, condition, and the number of comparable sales all matter.

- Single Trading Card
- Wizards Black Star Pikachu #1: Theo TCG estimated about $32 raw as of September 2026, citing PriceCharting sales data.
- Birthday Pikachu #24: Theo TCG estimated about $315 raw as of September 2026. The guide also estimated about $13,657 for a PSA 10, but said that figure rested on roughly three sales a year—too few to treat as a stable market price.
- Jungle prerelease-stamped Base Set Raichu error: Theo TCG reported a $550,000 sale on September 19, 2025, for a PSA-authenticated EX-MT 6 example, attributing the sale to Heritage Auctions. It is an exceptional transaction, not a baseline for promos.
These are secondary-guide estimates and a reported exceptional sale, not a comprehensive price list. The available examples do not establish an average promo-card value or a market-wide premium for rarity, distribution route, or grade.
How to identify the exact promo before checking its price
Small differences can point to different printings with different sales histories. Record the details below before searching.

- You will receive, at random, a Pokémon TCG: First Partner Illustration Collection—Series that will contain 3 of 9 possible Promo Cards featuring beloved first partner Pokémon from the Johto, Unova, or Galar region.
- You will get 1 Pokémon TCG booster pack containing 3 of 9 promo cards
- This also comes with 2 Pokémon TCG booster packs and a sticker sheet.
- Name and number: Note the printed card name and card number or set code. Older numbered promos and newer set-code promos should not be assumed to be the same issue.
- Language and region: A Japanese card and an English-language version are not interchangeable comparisons.
- Artwork and treatment: Check the illustration, foil finish, and any stamp or other variant marking.
- Distribution or product context: Record where the card came from, if known, such as an event or a retail product.
- Condition or grade: For an ungraded card, record that it is raw; for a graded card, record the grading company and grade.
Use the card’s printed details and the physical copy to confirm identity. A similar name or artwork is not enough if the number, language, stamp, or treatment differs.

Wear can separate the price of two copies of the same card, so compare like with like: raw cards against raw cards, or graded cards at the same grade and—where possible—the same grading company. A grade does not make every copy worth a fixed amount; the relevant evidence is what buyers recently paid for comparable copies.

PSA CardFacts records separate sale results by grade for the 2016 Nintendo Pokémon Japanese XY Promo Poncho-Wearing Pikachu Mega Charizard X Pikachu Special Box card. Its history includes a $9,100 PSA 9 sale on March 23, 2026, and a $7,052 PSA 10 sale on May 11, 2025. Those are historical transactions for one named card, not current offers or a general rule that a lower grade is worth more. PSA CardFacts
How to estimate a promo card’s value
- Identify the printing. Match the name, number or code, language, artwork, stamp, foil treatment, and release context.
- Assess the copy. Inspect the front and back under good light for visible wear. If it is graded, note the grading company and grade.
- Find completed sales for the exact match. Search for the same printing and variant, then match raw or graded status and, for graded cards, grade. Prefer several recent transactions to a single striking result. A card-comps provider describes its approach as matching the same card and condition and filtering outliers; that is the provider’s methodology, not an independent market standard. PriceCharting
- Keep comparisons consistent. Do not mix languages, reprints, stamps, foil treatments, grades, or regions. Check the currency and dates of the sales.
- Report what the evidence supports. Use a dated range when several comparable sales are available. If records are sparse, say so and distinguish observed transactions from estimates, asking prices, or predictions.
A completed sale records an actual transaction; an active listing records what a seller hopes to receive. Do not use an asking price as though a buyer paid it. A single unusually high result—or a high-grade card that sells only occasionally—does not establish a dependable market value.

How to interpret sparse or exceptional sales
Even a verified sale may be a poor guide to what another copy will sell for. Check the card identity, condition or grade, date, and number of comparable transactions before treating a figure as representative. The Birthday Pikachu #24 PSA 10 estimate above is a useful example: Theo TCG said it was based on roughly three sales a year, so it should be read cautiously rather than as a reliably available price.
