Check that text is readable, the page fits the screen without sideways scrolling, and important buttons and links respond to taps. For an optional technical check, run the page URL through PageSpeed Insights—but treat its report as a diagnostic, not a guarantee that your visit-related task will be easy.
Check the site on the phone you will bring
A quick, practical check is to use the site as you expect to use it before or during your visit. This is visitor advice, not a formal certification of a business or its website.

- Open the place’s website on your phone. If you have a link to a particular page—such as its menu, ticket page, or booking form—start there.
- Find the information you need: for example, the address, opening hours, menu, accessibility details, ticket conditions, or a contact or booking option.
- Read a few lines of ordinary text. If you repeatedly need to pinch and zoom to make it legible, that may make the site frustrating to use.
- Scroll down the page. Vertical scrolling is normal; you should not have to scroll sideways to read a line or reach an important control.
- Tap the relevant navigation item, phone number, map link, booking button, or other control. Check that it is easy to hit and does what you expect.
These checks focus on the task that matters to you. A site may display its homepage adequately while making a specific detail or action hard to find.

- Readable: You can read the content without repeatedly zooming in.
- Fits the screen: Text and important controls are visible without horizontal scrolling.
- Usable controls: Navigation, links, and buttons are easy to tap and respond as expected.
- Task is possible: You can find the information or complete the action you came for.
Google described readability, screen fit, and tap targets in earlier mobile-usability guidance. Those remain useful observations for a visitor, but that 2014 article is historical guidance, not a current official scoring tool: Google’s earlier mobile-friendly guidance.

Use PageSpeed Insights for an optional technical check
- Copy the URL of the page you want to check.
- Open PageSpeed Insights, enter the URL, and run the analysis.
- Review the mobile results as technical diagnostics. PageSpeed Insights uses Lighthouse for lab analysis and can show field data from the Chrome User Experience Report when data is available, according to Google’s PageSpeed Insights documentation.
A report can help surface performance and technical issues, but it does not tell you whether you can easily find the venue’s hours, understand its ticket details, or complete its booking flow. Use it alongside the phone check, not in place of it. Speed is one part of usability, not the whole experience.

Why the old Google mobile test is not the answer
Google retired its Mobile-Friendly Test tool, API, and Search Console Mobile Usability report beginning December 1, 2023. Danny Sullivan, Google’s public liaison for Search, announced the retirement on April 19, 2023, writing: “Also starting December 1, 2023, we’ll be retiring Search Console’s “Mobile Usability” report, the Mobile-Friendly Test tool and Mobile-Friendly Test API.” The Google Search Central announcement points to Lighthouse among resources for evaluating mobile usability. The retired test should not be confused with PageSpeed Insights, which remains a separate way to analyze a page URL.

Google recommends responsive web design as one way to configure a mobile site, but as a visitor you do not need to work out how the site was built. What matters is whether the information and controls you need work on your phone. See Google’s mobile site and mobile-first indexing guidance.
