France moved the other way: the CAC 40 fell. The figures are intraday readings, not closing results or evidence of a lasting reversal.
What the European market snapshot showed
Reuters reported the pan-European STOXX 600 up 0.2% at 632.42 points at 0720 GMT on October 5. Most major regional indexes were flat to higher, recovering some of the previous week’s losses. Reuters described that prior weekly decline as the index’s biggest in a month; the report did not give its percentage.

France lagged the broader move
The CAC 40 fell 0.8% in the reported snapshot, while most major regional indexes were flat to higher. A company-specific decline also weighed on the French market: Schneider Electric shares dropped 7.2% after the company announced a $22.6 billion acquisition of US software company PTC, its largest deal to date, according to Reuters.

Reuters also pointed to investor concerns about France’s fiscal outlook. It reported that the euro had fallen to a 17-month low amid worries about the country’s debt burden and political gridlock ahead of the next year’s presidential election. These are concerns reported at the time, not a settled explanation of market movements or a forecast.
Other factors Reuters cited
Reuters said rising bond yields were fuelling inflation worries and concerns about worsening fiscal outlooks. Spanish shares were largely steady after Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called a snap election for November 29. Mining stocks rose 0.5%; Reuters linked gains in precious metals to softer-than-expected US jobs data and expectations that the Federal Reserve would leave rates unchanged that month.

How to read the numbers
- Broad European benchmark: STOXX 600 up 0.2% to 632.42 at 0720 GMT, October 5, 2026.
- France: CAC 40 down 0.8% in the reported snapshot.
- Schneider Electric: shares down 7.2% after the PTC acquisition announcement.
- Mining stocks: up 0.5% in Reuters’ report.
The figures come from a Reuters market report republished by Investing.com, published October 5, 2026. They describe that report’s snapshot; they should not be read as independently verified closing data. A single morning rebound after a weak week does not establish a trend reversal.
