To track service prices across websites, collect each permitted price observation into a structured, append-only log, then connect that log to a dashboard. Keep the source price and offer details alongside any normalized value: a monthly price is only comparable when region, tier, billing period, currency, usage basis, fees, and promotion terms align.
1. Define what counts as a comparable price
Start with the services and offers you want to compare. A listed amount by itself is not enough: a price may depend on location, subscription tier, annual versus monthly billing, included usage, taxes, or a limited-time promotion.

- Record the service and a stable identifier for the specific offer.
- Capture the displayed price exactly as shown, its currency, billing period, and usage basis.
- Record region, service tier, included features, taxes or fees, and promotion status when available.
- Keep the source URL and the time observed.
Preserve both the raw displayed price and any normalized value, such as a monthly equivalent. Document the assumptions behind the normalization. If a material attribute is unknown or differs, mark the offers as not directly comparable instead of ranking them as if they were equivalent.

Use an official API, published feed, authorized export, or another source-approved method where one exists. Before automating access to a website, check that site’s terms and applicable access rules. Whether collection is permitted depends on the particular site and jurisdiction; do not assume that a publicly visible price is automatically available for automated collection.

For each source, document the collection method and the last successful observation. This helps distinguish a price that is current from a failed or stale check. If the collection will have significant commercial consequences, seek advice appropriate to the relevant jurisdiction.
3. Create an append-only price history
Use one row per observation rather than overwriting the previous price. An append-only log preserves changes over time and makes it possible to distinguish a new observation from a correction or a missing check. Google Sheets API’s values.append method is one documented way to add values to the next row of a detected table.

Use consistent formats for dates, currencies, statuses, and offer identifiers. If a check fails or a value is unavailable, record that state rather than carrying the previous price forward as if it had been observed again.
4. Connect the log to a dashboard
Looker Studio data sources connect data to reports, and Google documents Google Sheets as a supported connection route. The dashboard layer does not collect every website’s prices by itself: the data must first reach a structured source.

For a web-accessible source without a built-in integration, Google documents Apps Script Community Connectors. Connector use can depend on Apps Script and organization settings; administrators can manage third-party connector access using Google’s third-party connector administration guidance.
5. Design the comparison and history views
Keep the latest comparison separate from the historical trend. A useful first dashboard page can show the latest comparable observation for each service and a trend over time, with filters for region, tier, billing period, and currency. Make the observation time and source visible so readers can assess freshness.

- Use an explicit status for stale, unavailable, promotional, or non-comparable observations.
- Do not silently display an older observation as the current standard price.
- Use consistent definitions for dimensions and measures so charts aggregate the intended values; see Google’s data source documentation.
- Show the raw advertised value as well as any normalized monthly or unit price and its assumptions.
Compare only after aligning region, tier, billing period, currency, usage basis, included features, taxes or fees, and promotion terms where known. If an attribute is missing, expose that uncertainty rather than implying a precise apples-to-apples result.

Choose a check schedule that matches how quickly the source is likely to change and how fresh the dashboard needs to be. Batch writes where practical and avoid unnecessary calls. Google’s Sheets API documentation currently lists 300 read requests and 300 write requests per minute per project, and 60 reads and 60 writes per minute per user per project; these are volatile documented limits, so check the current quota page before setting a production schedule. Google recommends exponential backoff for time-based quota errors.

Common problems and fixes
- Prices appear comparable but describe different offers: Add the missing region, billing period, usage basis, feature, fee, or promotion details, then filter or label the offers rather than combining them.
- The dashboard repeats an old value: Store an observation status and timestamp for every check; distinguish failed or unavailable checks from a successful observation.
- Trend charts aggregate incorrectly: Standardize field types and definitions, and ensure each row represents one observation for one offer.
- Writes fail under load: Review the current Sheets API quotas, reduce request frequency, batch writes where feasible, and use exponential backoff for time-based quota errors.
- A connector is unavailable: Check workspace or administrator settings and the applicable connector requirements; use an approved alternative source path if needed.
- Automated collection is blocked or questioned: Re-check the source’s terms and approved access methods. Do not treat a technical ability to fetch a page as permission to automate collection.
