How to Check Whether a PC Game Will Run Well on Your Computer

Check a game’s OS and hardware requirements against your PC, then use game-specific benchmarks or live performance data for a more realistic estimate than minimum specs alone.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Compare the game’s official requirements with your PC’s exact hardware and operating system, then check game-specific benchmarks at the resolution and settings you plan to use. On Windows, search for dxdiag to identify your processor, memory, graphics card, driver details and DirectX version. Meeting a game’s minimum requirements is a starting point—not a promise of smooth performance.

1. Check the exact game and its supported operating system

Start with the game’s official store page or developer support page. Confirm the operating-system version and architecture it supports, then note the listed CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and graphics requirements. A PC can have powerful components and still fail the OS compatibility check. Steam recommends checking both operating-system compatibility and hardware requirements: Steam: Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Software.

2. Find your computer’s actual specifications

Use DxDiag on Windows

  1. Open Windows Search, type dxdiag, and select the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
  2. Check the System tab for processor, installed memory and DirectX version.
  3. Check the Display tab for the graphics-card name, driver version and driver date. If the computer has more than one display adapter, review each relevant display tab.
  4. Choose Save All Information if you want a report to compare with the game’s requirements or share for troubleshooting.

EA’s guide explains that a DxDiag report includes processor, memory, page-file size, graphics card, driver version and date, limited error messages and DirectX version: EA Help: How to gather DxDiag information. Steam also describes using DxDiag to find graphics-card and driver details: Steam Support.

Check free storage

Compare the game’s stated storage requirement with the free space on the drive where you plan to install it. Capacity is only one part of the check: also confirm any stated OS, CPU, GPU, memory and graphics-feature requirements.

3. Compare requirements component by component

Use the exact model names where possible. “NVIDIA,” “AMD,” or “Intel” alone does not identify how a particular CPU or graphics card compares with a requirement. Check the processor and GPU models, installed RAM, OS, storage, driver status and any required graphics API or feature.

Pay particular attention to graphics features. The DirectX version shown by Windows does not, by itself, prove that a graphics card supports every shader capability a game needs. Steam highlights this distinction in its hardware guidance: Steam Support. Microsoft explains how to check the DirectX version in Windows: Microsoft Support: Which version of DirectX is on your PC?.

4. Treat minimum requirements as a baseline, not a performance promise

Requirements help screen for compatibility, but they do not give a personalized frame-rate estimate or guarantee a particular graphics quality. Steam Support puts it plainly: “Simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance.” Steam Support: Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Software.

If a listing separates minimum and recommended specifications, treat them as distinct guidance rather than interchangeable targets. Neither substitutes for performance evidence at your intended resolution and settings.

5. Look for evidence that matches how you will play

For a useful estimate, prioritize benchmarks of the same game on a similar CPU and GPU, tested at the resolution and graphics settings you expect to use. Compare the game version and test scene when available, along with GPU model and VRAM, system RAM, ray tracing or upscaling settings, average FPS and frame-time consistency or low-percentile results.

An in-game benchmark, when available, is especially relevant because it runs the game’s own workload. Synthetic benchmarks can help compare systems, but they cannot guarantee performance in a particular title. 3DMark says it tests CPU and GPU performance in game-like scenes, compares scores with similar systems and shows expected frame rates for a selection of games: 3DMark on Steam.

6. If you own the game, observe performance while playing

Steam’s in-game performance monitor can show frame rate and CPU, GPU and memory information, helping you judge whether the processor or graphics card may be limiting performance. Enable or configure it through Steam’s Settings > In Game options; the available display details can vary. See Steam’s instructions: Steam Support: Steam Overlay Performance Monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some games use frame generation, which can raise the displayed FPS beyond the base frame rate rendered by the game. Where the monitor reports both, distinguish generated frames from base-game performance rather than treating the larger figure as the whole story.

7. Diagnose common causes before considering an upgrade

Confirm the game is using the intended graphics card

Laptops may have integrated graphics as well as a discrete GPU. If performance is unexpectedly poor, check that the game is running on the intended adapter using the relevant Windows or GPU-vendor controls. A capable card does not help if the game is assigned to a different one.

Check drivers, memory pressure and heat

  • Drivers: Compare the installed graphics-driver version and date with the GPU vendor’s current guidance. Steam notes that outdated drivers can reduce FPS even when the GPU meets a game’s requirements: Steam Support.
  • Memory: If system memory is under pressure and the PC is swapping data, performance can suffer. Check memory use while the game is running rather than assuming RAM is the cause.
  • Temperature: Heat can reduce component clock speeds. Look for clock-speed drops alongside high temperatures and poor performance; lowering a graphics setting will not resolve every thermal or system issue.
  • Resolution: If lowering resolution substantially improves FPS, the graphics workload may be a limiting factor. If it does not, another component or issue may be involved. Steam’s hardware guide discusses resolution, memory swapping and heat-related clock reductions: Steam Support.

Use the observed bottleneck to guide next steps. Do not buy a GPU, RAM kit, storage drive or cooling part until you have identified a specific limitation and confirmed the proposed component fits your system.
